The Delawares, or the Delaware Mercenaries, were a group of major antagonists in Cormac McCarthy's 1985 historical and anti-Western epic novel Blood Meridian. They were native americans of the Delaweres, who assisted the Glanton Gang in their hunt for Apache scalps.
Biography[]
Not much is known about the Delawares prior to them joining Glanton's Gang, though they have joined prior to Judge Holden. They are seen often tracking nearby camps with Webster for Glanton and his men to attack.
They are first mentioned at the gang's camp, where one is grounding up coffeebeans in a buckskin with a rock and another takes out a coal from the embers to light his pipe. Throughout the story, the Delawares slowly die out, killed in action. One is taken by a bear and two others are injured in a fight with General Elias and are mercy killed by one of the remaining two Delaweres.
The final two Delawares are killed alongside two other members of Glanton's Gang, Gilchrist and Bathcat, as they are all hanged from a tree, their bodies mutilated.
List of known Members[]
The excact number of Delawares is never stated. Based on confirmed deaths, there's at least five: one killed by a bear, two mercy killed and the last two killed by the Apaches and hung from a tree.
Its howerever possible that some Delaweres are among the unnamed gang members to die in skirmishes with General Elias or at some point prior to The Kid joining the gang.
Very little physical description of them is given, though they are, when first seen in the novel, mentioned as being half-naked and black-eyed. Several later on acquire morningcoats, while at least two wear about them their blankets while injured.
Trivia[]
- Of all the Delawares, Judge Holden interacts with one in particular two times: once when setting up a kiln, and again when going off to find Black Jackson.
- Though none of their named are stated, its said that they, or at least the last remaining four, have christian names.
- In the real-life account of the Glanton Gang, Delaware natives are said to have had quite a number of members, along with lesser presence of Cherokees.
