“ | Imagining up some vain thing in their hearts, that it was wrought by men and by the power of the devil, to lead away and deceive the hearts of the people; and thus did Satan get possession of the hearts of the people again, insomuch that he did blind their eyes and lead them away to believe that the doctrine of Christ was a foolish and a vain thing. | „ |
~ Satan corrupting people in 3 Nephi 2:2 |
The Devil, also known as Lucifer or Satan, is the main antagonist of the Book of Mormon. He is regarded by many religions as the supreme overlord of Hell and demons. Alternatively, he is also considered to be the living embodiment of evil, whose power is second only to that of God. Although Satan was originally a Judeo-Christian concept, almost all orthodox religions have an evil godlike (or semi-godlike) figure that can be said to be connected to Satan in their mannerism and purpose.
Biography[]
Satan is a primordial life form that has dwelled within Hell since the dawn of the Creation. Wielding frighteningly supernatural power, Satan sought to conquer everyone and supplant God as the supreme authority over the cosmos. This gained him an enemy in Jesus Christ, who needed to save humanity from eternal torment by suffering the most unspeakably horrific fate ever known. Had he not done this, Satan would doubtlessly have power over everyone's souls. He even managed to employ contact with Korihor, but his deal with the Devil didn't end well and he was defeated, at which point Satan callously left him to his fate. According to Nephi, he also founded the "great and abominable church" sometime prior, which prominently featured the "whore of all the earth".
Personality[]
Satan can be most charitably described as a being of pure and utter malevolence, a devilish anomaly focused solely on enriching Hell and conquering all other worlds of the infinite Creation, so he may reign as a god over everything and everyone. His endgame is for everyone to be miserable, and with such an unpopular agenda, he is inevitably very manipulative, lacing elements of truth into the lies he told his pawn Korihor, the best to achieve his unthinkable vision for the future of all things. However, his personality and his character are arguably hard to pin down or analyze because of his considerably vague presence throughout the 531 pages of the holy scripture.
Trivia[]
- The reason why the Mormonism take on Satan is not part of the King James Bible story profile is because of numerous differences between the two that cannot make them compatible as a single profile.
