Villain Overview

Your life… is meaningless. But your death… will be legendary.
~ The Driver

The Driver is the main antagonist of the 2016 slasher Fender Bender. The Driver is an unnamed American serial killer, who particularly favors young, beautiful, suggestible women and girls across the country as victims. The latest girl The Driver targets, Hilary Diaz, is the protagonist who tries to fight the killer throughout the film.

He was portrayed by Bill Sage, who also played: Venable, Coach Eiden, Bobby Masconi and Frank Parker.

Biography[]

The Driver's first seen stalking Jennifer, the latest fender bender victim. After she's off her phone call with friend and taking a bath with a wine glass, he texts her from the info she gave him and asks if she's enjoying the bath, but plays it as "just guessing". When she's finished, she goes to bed in her night wear, but when she turns to her side, she sees the killer starting right in her face with the signature mask. She screams, and The Driver tries to pin her, but she pushes the killer off and runs down the stairs, the killer pulling out the signature retractable switchblade. She doesn't think she has enough time to unlock the door, so she tries to climb out the window. The killer comes up behind her and stabs her three times in her back, twisting the knife each time, while she's dangling out halfway. She's yanked in, the window slamming shut before the killer finishes slashing her to death.

The Driver later uses Jennifer's info in New Mexico on a girl name Hilary Diaz, bumping her car and causing them both to walk over to each other. He pretends he was distracted and, because she's a new driver, buys his ruse of exchanging contact info to call insurance companies for claims. Hilary's parents are livid, especially with the info exchange, so they go on vacation and leave her behind, which she lets happen being upset with them as well, believing what she did wasn't the end of the world. The Driver later sends her a cake saying "Sorry" and stalks her outside her house at a legal distance, to vouyeristically watch her and set her on edge and off her guard.

Hilary's friends Rachel and Eric arrive, which scares her enough she nearly hits them with her bat with how much she's been stalked. Her drunk ex-boyfriend Andy also arrives to make a scene, but the trio chase him away. The Driver waited outside the whole time, coming up behind Andy and stabbing him to death to get him out of the way. When Hilary gets a call from her insurance agent, revealing the info belonged to a now-dead Jennifer, not The Driver, the phone lines and power both get cut. When The Driver appears behind the three kids, knife at the ready, they all scream and run.

Rachel hides under the bed, while Eric starts to get intoxicated and sick, leading Hilary to walk him by his arm over her shoulder. Assuming the killer's gone, Rachel tries to get out from the bed. But it's flipped over, and the killer nearly stabs her. She fights back to an extent with the bat Hilary used earlier, but the killer stabs her in her stomach, walks her slowly over to the window, and throws her out. When she lands on the driveway, the killer releases the brakes on Hilary's car, cause it to roll back and run over Rachel, killing her in less than a minute.

The Driver seemingly doesn't find Hilary and Eric in the plastic-lined basement and leaves inside. But when they try to escape, he barges through the door to the outside and stabs Eric in the throat, to Hilary's horror as she screams while Eric dies. She runs out and finds Andy's and Rachel's corpses strung up on her house's fencing. While being chased by The Driver in his car, she cries why she's being targeted and then screams for help. She then decides to fight back, which The Driver challenges her to by revving the engine. She runs back into her garage and beats the killer with a tire iron, then douses him with gasoline and tries to light him on fire with a match. All her matches run out to quickly, so she runs into his car. She pauses and looks in baffled shock at all the driver's licenses stolen from dozens, maybe hundreds, of women and girls who were murdered by The Driver. Snapping back into focus, she rushes using the car cigarette lighter to start a small fire she throws at the drive. The gasoline catches fire, and the killer crumbles top the ground burning alive. Hillary goes back into the house and calls the cops, but the killer's revealed to have survived. As she screams for help over the phone, she's pinned to the wall by her throat and stabbed in her legs. she then begs for her life, leading The Driver to say "your life is meaningless, but your death will be legendary", before killing her with a stab in her abdomen. All four kids are placed in their cars dead, while The Driver squats in the house, eating and drinking from the family's groceries, cleaning himself in the shower, changing the name on the info from Hilary to "Harry", and taking Hillary's driver's license. Getting his car washed, he stares at the contact info, then places Hilary's license on the ceiling and strokes it with his fingers. After filling up on gas, he drives off onto the highways and interstates to go find more people to kill.

Modus Operandi[]

The Driver targeted young, pretty women and girls, usually Caucasian, he came across during his drive across the country and had a better chance at manipulating with worry and possible unwanted attention. He'd start his ruse with a fender bender he deliberately caused, then got out of his car to discuss the damages with them, pretending he wasn't paying attention to the road. The Driver would ingratiate toward the women and girls and come up with a ruse to worry them into not reporting the accident for immediate dispatch. He'd get their contact info pretending it was for insurance claims, using the info of the previous woman or girl he stalked with the first name changed into an alias he'd use for himself as part of the ploy. After having their credentials, he'd stalk them and pretend to "apologize" but would continue to harass them, including with presents and veiled messages with details implying he was watching them in the moment. After an extent of this, The Driver would break into their houses, dressed in leather, jeans, boots, and a leather face mask looking like a car front bumper, chasing after them and killing them primarily with a retractable switchblade with a handle the shape of that from a car door. Any other witnesses or guests at the house would also be murdered, by the switchblade or various means. After leaving their corpses in their cars, he's squat in their homes, raid their food and drinks, and use their facilities. He'd change their first names on their contact info into an alias for himself, and he would take their driver's license and paste to the ceiling of his car as a trophy, before driving and starting all over again. Considering the ceiling Hilary Diaz found when she was trying to fight and kill The Driver herself, albeit unsuccessfully, it obviously is implied dozens or hundreds of women and girls, as well as any other people as collateral, have fallen victim to the patterned crimes.
