Since time immemorial, I have languished here. The locks are broken. Now I shall tear down the walls between dimensions and consume all.
~ The End revealing its true nature and after being released from Cyber Space.

Mortal, you have served your purpose. Now, face your End. I am the all-consuming void. What can one mote of golden light illuminate within the abyss? Countless stars. Countless worlds. Countless lives. All fell to me, all brought to nothing. All the teeming chaos of creation? Brought to order. To neutrality. To nothing. I saw your mind as you ran through my prison. You have fought machines and gods. They were mighty. They were finite. I am infinite. I am nothing. You struggle as so many have done before. You will be consumed like all those before you. I saw your mind. Your courage never wavered. Why? Arrogance? Ignorance? Stupidity? I was contained once. Once. Is that why? My captors bent time and space. My captors built a whole reality to contain me. My captors burnt their souls away to fuel their engines. And you? You glitter. You fly above me like a gnat. I am inevitable. I cannot be denied. You strike this incarnation with all your might. It changes nothing. You are not brave, you are not victorious. No matter what form I take... the End comes for you all!
~ The End on its immortality and perpetual existence.

This shell was once my prison. Now it shall be the avatar of my return. All shall perish. All shall return to order. To oblivion.
~ The End after hijacking the SUPREME.

The End (in Japanese: 終わり, Owari), also known as the All-Consuming Void, is the overarching antagonist of Sega's Sonic the Hedgehog franchise, specifically serving as the main antagonist of the 2022 platform game Sonic Frontiers and its 2023 update, The Final Horizon.

It is a nihilistic and extraordinarily powerful god-like cosmic entity that terrorized the universe for eons in its quest to destroy it. Having not only destroyed the home planet of the Ancients long ago in the past, it also did so to an innumerable amount of other stars and worlds, the impact of it's actions having claimed an immense amount of lives. The destruction of the Ancients' home world had led them to escape to Earth and subsequently create a new home of residence on the Starfall Islands, where a reflection of their former home planet would be stored into a digital dimension Cyber Space. When The End followed them and threatened to destroy their new home, the Ancients managed to seal it in one of their Titans before locking it in Cyber Space for tens of thousands of years. The aftermath of The End's actions also led to the arrival of the Chaos Emeralds on Earth and, as a result, every problem caused by their existence.

Throughout Sonic's journey across the Starfall Islands, though The End initially is a voice that guides him, its true motivations, being freed from Cyber Space, are eventually revealed when Sonic briefly gets trapped in between dimensions after absorbing too much cyber energy. Now with its newfound freedom, it once again resumed its mission to travel across dimensions and tear down the very fabric that they consist of, making The End one of the most sadistic, dangerous, and powerful foes that Sonic ever faced.

In Japanese, it is voiced by Gara Takashima for its female voice and Hōchū Ōtsuka for its male voice. In English, it is voiced by Cindy Robinson for its female voice who also did the voice for Queen Beryl in Sailor Moon and Mike Pollock, who also did the voice for Dr. Ivo "Eggman" Robotnik in the same franchise, Zorc Necrophades in Yu-Gi-Oh, Mr. Meat in Mr. Meat, and the Garbageman in the 2003 Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles TV series for its male voice.

Appearance[]

Uhh.. spooky-sky voice? You there? No? Okie-doke.
~ Sonic.

Although stated to have a physical form of some sort, the fact that The End is an abstract entity means that it does not possess an immediate corporeal or physical form. The End itself instead appears to be a looming reddish-purple mist that gains control over whatever living organism it chooses at will. In other instances, it may either appear as a reddish cloud of corrupted cyber energy, or it will warp reality itself and exhibit static-like effects, indicating its presence. Regardless of what form it takes, it always indicates its presence through its distinct digitized voice, consisting of two male and female voices speaking concurrently. The End also possesses the ability to take on multiple incarnations. As such, the appearance of its actual true form is said to vary from person to person, but it appears as what its subjects perceive death itself to look like by altering their perception. This form also appears to have a giant purple tendril with a nozzle attached to it, which it can use to take on other forms by injecting it's essence into objects, and is implied to have seven arms with 3 clawed fingers.

Moon[]

One of The End's incarnations was shown in the final battle with Sonic, both in the original game and the Final Horizon, where The End bares one of its weaker incarnations in the form of a purple moon. Slightly larger than and bearing strong resemblance to Earth's Moon, such form also has visual traits resembling the planet Mercury, glowing faintly with a reddish aura.

SUPREME[]

Supreme (wings)

SUPREME using laser wings

When sealed in SUPREME, it is the tallest of the Titans, constructed primarily of brushed white metal with black and red highlights. It has a broad upper torso and thinner legs, with holes resembling eyes along its entire body. Its wrists and hands are black, with three fingers ending in pointed red claws. Attached to its shoulders is a shell-like plate featuring ten cylindrical thrusters, and upon its shoulders are laser emitters that can summon ethereal laser wings.

Supreme's head is covered by a red helmet that connects to a spinal cord down its neck. This helmet has multiple lines and lights analogous to eyes. Two horn-like protrusions rise above the back of its head, curving around its face and splitting into three horns pointing downwards on each side. Its chin has four more protrusions similar to a beard, the outer pair longer than the inner pair.

Another one of The End's incarnations is also implied when it injects itself into the Supreme Titan, significantly altering its appearance to appear as itself. From the transformation, The End is implied have multiple arms with clawed hands, which grow on the back of the Titan's thrusters, and it moves on all four like an animal.

Personality[]

At first glance, The End, in its state as a disembodied voice that is guiding Sonic, appears to be helpful and cooperative, yet enigmatic and mysterious in its reasons for guiding him. Although it speaks with an almost emotionless and somewhat demanding tone, it does seem to want to genuinely help Sonic free his friends and leave the Starfall Islands.

However, no assessment of its motives could be further from the truth. Upon Sonic being corrupted through the Cyber-Energy and becoming trapped between dimensions, it reveals its true nature as it's finally freed; a purely evil cataclysmic entity fueled by malevolence, pride, sadism, and genocidal intentions, owing to finish what it started centuries ago by attempting to completely wipe out existence and revert the universe to nothing. Egotistical, nihilistic, sadistic, and utterly cruel in nature, The End thrives off destruction and takes great satisfaction in both destroying lives to the point of proudly bragging about the carnage wrought afterwards with no hint of remorse, feeling incredibly proud and pleased with itself after claiming countless innocent lives.

While it appears on the outside to merely be another mindless entity seeking nothing but destruction and ruination, The End is incredibly intelligent, manipulative, and deceitful. It used the Chaos Emeralds' return to the Starfall Islands to plan its return by having Sonic use them to defeat the Titans keeping it at bay, taking full advantage of his altruistic and heroic nature to play the part of a pawn in its plans. It also took advantage of the fact that Sage is one of Eggman's creations programmed to not relay information about her goals to Sonic, and used both this and the warning it gave Sonic about the Titans to make them and Sage appear to be the enemies, all done for the purpose of allowing it to break free and continue consuming all of creation indiscriminately.

At its core, The End is a supremely egotistical entity who firmly believes itself to be above everyone and everything. Owing to how it sees itself as a representation of death and universal finality, it feels entitled to force its cruel beliefs onto civilizations and takes great pride in bringing countless worlds to ruin for its own amusement. For as much as an eldritch creature as it is, it is incredibly sadistic and borderline psychopathic with how it views other beings, labeling those below it as "mortals", being fully aware of how many innocent lives it's claimed during its quest of universal cataclysm and openly not caring a single bit or showing any remorse, instead choosing to boast about its actions like they're accomplishments to be proud of. During its final fight with Super Sonic and Sage possessing the Titan Supreme, it confidently boasted about how the combined efforts of the two wouldn't stand a chance against it, intending on killing them as soon as it could, showing how self-assured it is, as well as demeaning Sonic by essentially calling him worthless compared to how the Ancients dealt with it in the past. It also claimed to have looked through Sonic's mind while he was trapped in Cyber-Space and knows about the previous foes he faced, as well as the fact that it is directly responsible for these villains existing due to bringing the Chaos Emeralds to Earth, and not caring a single bit, instead taking this as an opportunity to once again brag and degrade Sonic's past enemies as "finite" while proclaiming itself as the true "infinite", as well as "nothing" due to how overwhelmingly powerful it believes itself to be.

However, in spite of how utterly twisted, deceptive, remorseless and evil The End is, it doesn't view itself as such. Rather, The End believes that it's doing the right thing by bringing what it sees as an uncontrollably chaotic existence to "order", "neutrality" and "nothing". The End undoubtedly embodies nihilism and through its perspective, life, existence and the universe is worthless, meaningless and in its words, teeming with chaos, due to how unpredictable it is, and so, by destroying all of existence and reverting the universe to nothing, The End believes that true order can be obtained and took on the role as a personification of death to do so, intending on bringing about the end of everything as we know it. However, its "noble" goals are merely delusions brought on by its arrogant nature and nihilistic thoughts, as it forces its beliefs onto countless civilizations because it views itself as the ultimate authority, showing that its delusions are solely motivated by ego. Subsequently, while it does believe what it's doing is right, it isn't above toying with others for no reason other than sheer sadism, showing that it takes pleasure in what it does.

In spite of its strength, power, intelligence, sadism, and destructiveness, at heart, The End is extremely petty and childish when it doesn't get its way, barely being able to contain its rage when confronting Sonic and Sage in space as it tries ruthlessly to kill the duo once and for all for "defying" it, as its ego believes that because it's "The End", no one should be able to escape its grasp. When its physical incarnation was defeated by Sonic, it decided to blow itself up out of pure spite for losing to what it considered lesser beings, intending on taking Sonic, Sage and Earth with it before Sage contained the explosion by sacrificing herself.

Biography[]

Past[]

EndPlanetDestruction

The End destroying the Ancients' home planet.

The End is a cosmic abomination that predates all recorded history and seeks to destroy all of existence. It is completely unknown as to where this entity came from, its true name, true form and motivations, but what data can be gathered about the creature show that tens of thousands of years ago, The End had terrorized the universe and destroyed an innumerable amount of planets, stars, and worlds. At one point, there was an advanced ancient alien civilization known as the Ancients, the ancestors of both Chaos and the Chao, as well as the original owners of the Chaos Emeralds, where they were initially used as their primary power source for all of their advanced technology. The End suddenly attacked them, and, despite the Ancients' efforts to stop it, destroyed their home planet by slicing it clean in half with a quick swipe of its laser. As The End quickly began feasting on the Ancients' world (presumably to become more powerful), the Ancients decided to take refuge on another planet, traveling using spacecrafts harnessed by the emeralds.

When the Ancients were close to Earth, the Chaos Emeralds reacted to a nearby source, which turned out to be the Master Emerald. This caused them to lose navigation of their ships, so they decided to settle on Earth, where they would recolonize on the Starfall Isles. While there, they created all sorts of advanced technology such as altars that harnessed the powers of the Chaos Emeralds. The Ancients had also created four powerful robots known as the Titans in order to fend off against The End, powering them with the Chaos Emeralds. They had also built six tall towers on Rhea Island, which would act as a sort of barrier between dimensions.

Even though they tried to preserve their society, having already saved their home planet into Cyber Space, this was of little use, as very few Ancients were remaining after the destruction of the planet, and The End was still persistent in killing the last of them, as evidenced in several flashbacks that Sonic encountered, and followed them to the Islands. When The End had struck Chaos Island with many of its lasers, leading to the mass destruction of the Earth's surface caused by numerous volcanoes, this then caused the Ancients to flee to the island that is now known as Angel Island.

With the Chaos Emeralds, a small group of the Ancients had devised a plan to stop The End once and for all in the hopes of not having to rely on their backup plan. They had decided that they would gather the four Titans to fight it. This does not go according to plan, as Crane: the operator of Supreme had come to realize that The End couldn't be defeated, even with the four Titans they brought over to fight it.

Supreme Absorbs TheEnd

The End being sealed to the Supreme Titan.

He instead resorted to infusing it into his Titan in a vain attempt to permanently contain it. As he tried to do this, he was killed by The End, and it takes over the Supreme Titan completely. Due to the failure of the plan as well as the catastrophic events caused by the infusion, what remained of the civilization resorted to their backup plan, where they would move all of the Chaos Emeralds to the Master Emerald to sustain the energy of the emeralds while they moved to what is now Angel Island, keep The End sealed into Cyber Space as it is infused in Supreme, activated the towers on Rhea Island to prevent it from going between other dimensions, and pilot the rest of the Titans, now containing the souls of their pilots, to guard the Islands to prevent its escape. While at Angel Island, the radiation from the Master Emerald had seemingly mutated future generations of the Ancients into the Chao that are around the area today.

Ever since then, The End has been secluded in Cyber Space, and had waited for thousands of years to be freed in order to use all of its power, and continue the destruction of all existence, though it still had a fraction of its power, and major influence over the happenings in the outside world.

Sonic Frontiers[]

The End: Mortal.
Sonic: Yow! Hello?
The End: You have done the impossible! You have escaped Cyber Space through your own power. You are the Key.
Sonic: "Key", huh? Sure beats being called a "rodent". Are you saying I can rescue my friends?
The End: Find the Chaos Emeralds. Destroy the Titans. Tear down the wall between dimensions.
~ The End's cryptic orders to Sonic.

A long time after, due to the re-emergence of The End, the Chaos Emeralds begin gathering at the Starfall Islands, which prompts Dr. Eggman to travel there an obtain them himself, and try to understand the ancient technology found there hoping to use it aganst Sonic. When Eggman installs Sage into a bit of the technology, Sage discovers The End, and due to her programming, decides to suck Eggman into Cyber Space in order to protect him from the entity. Sonic, Tails, and Amy all try to follow him to the Islands, but are soon sucked up by a wormhole into Cyber Space, and are later imprisoned by Sage to exclude external variables while she protected Eggman and the island. Though Sonic was also caught in the wormhole, he is the only one to not get trapped, as he escapes through a portion of Cyber Space that resembles Green Hill Zone. He then finds himself in a meadow on the Starfall Islands.

When he awakens, he is greeted by a distant, digitized voice, telling him that through Sonic's own power, he managed to escape Cyber Space, and is therefore the only hope there is to save his friends and the Starfall Islands. It tells him that in order to do this, he has to collect the Chaos Emeralds found in the area, destroy the barriers between dimensions, and destroy the Titans. When Sonic tries to ask for context regarding this, the voice does not respond.

CorruptedSonic

Sonic after being corrupted by the Cyber-Energy.

All throughout, the voice guides Sonic on his journey through the strange abandoned lands. Sonic assisting The End is in part the reason why Sage is seen antagonizing Sonic throughout the game, combined with the fact that he's freeing his friends from the cages she set in order to protect Eggman, not realizing that Sonic means no harm to either the land or the Kocos. Progressively, Sonic himself appears to degenerate via the absorption of Cyber Energy, which seems to give Sonic a sort of "boost" as well as new abilities every time he breaks one of the cages. When he deactivates the final tower on Rhea Island, this causes him to get caught between dimensions after breaking through the barriers that separate them. By this point, The End has reached its intended goal of breaking the barriers that had separated dimensions, and can now freely travel between them once again.

After Tails, Knuckles, and Amy transfer back into Cyber Space to free Sonic, Sonic and Sage form an alliance to fight The End. So they gathered the seven Chaos Emeralds one more time to fight against The End. The End arrives while possessing the Titan Supreme. Shortly after being defeated by Sonic, it begins retreating into space in order to begin progress on assuming its true form. With an urgency to defeat The End while still in its weakened state, both Super Sonic and Sage, now in control of Supreme, go to space and confront the entity. Even with The End in a weakened state, and with their combined strength, The End still proved to be too powerful for both of them. As soon as Sonic actually manages to do lasting damage on its moon incarnation, it attempts to blow itself up out of vengeance, attempting to kill both Sonic and Sage and wipe out the entire universe in one shot. Sage sacrifices herself by giving another blow onto the incarnation, seemingly absorbing The End as the incarnation exploded, which not only saved just Earth, but all of existence as a whole. However, it is possible that it won’t be the last time Sonic and his friends see The End since it’s stated it can reincarnate in a different form if its moon incarnation is destroyed.

Boss Battle[]

Sonic fights The End as two separate bosses: As the Supreme Titan, and its moon form.

On the easy/normal difficulty, the moon battle is just a bunch of Quick-Time Events.

However, on the hard difficulty, the player gets the full fight which resembles the hacking minigames on previous islands, Tou Hou and Ikaruga

The Final Horizon[]

The update picks up from when The End traps Sonic between dimensions from harnessing corrupted cyber energy. From there, Sage informs Sonic that he can harness the power of the Chaos Emeralds and combine it with the cyber energy to become powerful enough to defeat The End.

As Amy, Knuckles, and Tails retrieve the Chaos Emeralds to assist Sonic, they also begin feeling the same sort of corruption that Sonic had felt, and come face to face with The End on several occasions, assuring to it that Sonic will beat it.

Sonic is trained by the pilots of the four Titans, as well as the leader of the Ancients, Master King, for combat for when he finally encounters the End.

After the Supreme boss fight, unlike in the original story, however, after Supreme's defeat, instead of moving to outer space for Sage to pilot Supreme, The End chose to manifest itself in the real world through its "true" physical form and attaches an energy cable to the Supreme's neck, using the Titan as its "Avatar", controlling it like a puppet, granting it cataclysmic new abilities as well as five extra arms from its thrusters.

Super Sonic, Eggman, Sage, and Sonic's friends rallied to stop The End, with Super Sonic harnessing cyber corruption energy to become Super Sonic 2, gaining the power needed to repel the Supreme and weaken The End.

Once Supreme and The End were rendered vulnerable, Super Sonic 2 launches Supreme into the air before teaming up with Dr. Eggman to be shot from the Supreme's rifle.

Super Sonic 2 fully utilized his cyber corruption, becoming Super Sonic Cyber as Dr. Eggman launched the latter into Supreme, vaporizing the Titan instantly, using Wild Rush and subsequently blasting through The End, destroying the narcissistic being once and for all.

Powers and Abilities[]

The full scope of The End's power is not fully known or understood, though it is undeniably exceptionally powerful. It has been shown to take on multiple forms that best suit its current objective. In an unseen incarnation, it is able to use a laser in order to cut planets in half, and thereby destroying them by causing an explosion. It can also shoot multiple, less powerful lasers at its targets, the power of which are said to be comparable to Dark Gaia's powers.

While as a moon, it also has the ability to shoot projectiles made of pure energy at its enemies. While in this form, it proves to be very durable, as can withstand attacks from the Titans, which were all comparable to the power of the Eclipse Cannon, which was previously able to destroy half of Earth's moon. It also appears to have the ability to blow up any of its given incarnations at will, as shown when Sonic manages to burst through its moon incarnation.

The update also shows that while in this form, it can extend a sort of nozzle-like structure to inject itself into various objects, such as in the updated Supreme fight, where it uses this nozzle on the Titan in order to control it. Doing this also appears to have altered the Titan's appearance, giving it extra arms, and gave it the ability to shoot purplish balls of energy at its adversaries.

The End also has the innate ability to look into the minds of living creatures, read their memories, and directly speak to them. This is evident when it states that it accomplished this as Sonic was traversing Cyber Space, and saw all of the other villains that he fought. It also appears to do this selectively, as before being released, Sonic is the only one who can hear its voice. This ability may also go beyond the bounds of Cyber Space as well, as The End seemed to know about Sonic's altruistic nature before he ever approached Starfall Islands, and the result of his memories being transferred into Cyber Space created a landscape suited exclusively for Sonic's escape. The End can also alter the perception of its true form to its victims by appearing as what they perceive the incarnation of death to be, allowing it to conceal its true eldritch appearance.

Quotes[]

Said by The End[]

You are the key. Be empowered with this technique.
~ The End after Sonic is granted a new ability following the absorption of Cyber Energy.
I am the orchestrator and arbiter of order in the universe. My light is judgment. I melt all things and return them to the primordial dust. Nothing can escape the infinite light. Answer me, little life. Only through My discipline and judgment can life everywhere find peace. Many lives are now at peace under my guidance. Is it thy bloated ego that makes thee choose that path? Is it the aspiration of life to find the meaning of existence? The stronger the aspiration that life embraces, the more thousands of tribulations will descend upon it. Behold the many lives that flee and try to escape in the face of the hardships before them. Life, except for Me, is an entity that cannot overcome its own fragile mind. Life is oblivious to the ignorance that makes it believe only it does not make mistakes. There is no such thing as an absolute constant in the universe. Only a future of stupor awaits us in the face of irrationality and absurdity. When judgement comes, reality will be revealed. What did you crave, what did you discern, what did you question, what did you ponder, what did you accomplish? I hereby seal this planet forever. My attunement is the ruling of fate on everything that exists in this universe. Since time immemorial, it has been ordained that aspiring life forms will come to this end, and that there is no way to challenge thine foolishness. Hear, I say, the chirps of darkness that lurk in thine heartbeats. Life is to stagnate and enter its twilight. But thou wilt go on? It is a choice that is hard to understand. Stop the nonsense now. This is the last warning. Indeed. This was decided from ordination. It has been repeated time and time again. I see. Is the meaning of thy existence in this universe? Canst thou devote thy being to that aspiration which guides life? Something is about to happen. Something that transcends law and time. Is this the beginning of evolution? I see. So that is what the universe is, what life is.
~ The End's final boss dialogue in the Japanese translation of the base game.
I am the Orchestrator and Arbiter of cosmic order. My light is judgement. I melt all things and return them to the primordial dust. Nothing can escape the infinite light. Answer me, little life.
~ The End's final boss dialogue in the Japanese translation of The Final Horizon.

Referring to The End[]

They're... gone. It killed them.
~ The pilot of Wyvern describing The End's murder of Supreme's pilot.
Whatever assaulted the island sure packed a punch. That was on par with Dark Gaia, easy.
~ Tails describing the power of The End's lasers.

Trivia[]

  • During the final battle, The End's voice swaps from female-sounding to male-sounding constantly, implying it is genderless.
  • Due to the numerous parallels and inspirations Sonic Frontiers takes from the Evangelion franchise, The End's moon form is said to take inspiration from the Black Moon, the shell of Lilith. Both are giant purple moons that emit a sort of reddish particle, both are trapped in a sort of prison on Earth for many centuries, and both are said to be the shells of their respective true forms. Additionally, Supreme also bears resemblance to the Fourth Angel due to its white exterior, broad shoulders, and also having a red spherical structure on their bodies. Interestingly, Ian Flynn would also cement this comparison further by stating in on Q&A panel that the entity reminds him of the Angels from that series.
    • The End is based on the Angels from the Evangelion franchise. Like the Angels, The End is a powerful entity with ambiguous origins that desires to wipe out all life on Earth (the universe in The End's case), so as to become the sole remaining life form. However, the Angels are enigmatic offsprings simply following their goals of reclaiming the Earth, and have no real malice in their actions (aside from the occasional brutality and psychological abuse). The End, on the other hand, is an arrogant, self-righteous, and overtly malicious control freak that sees all life other than itself as a chaotic blight on its perfect order that must be wiped out.
  • It is believed that The End is the dark, destructive counterpart to the Master Emerald itself, but this theory is unconfirmed.
    • It is also believed that The End is somehow related to Solaris due to its similar cataclysmic desires and attempted mass omnicide, as well as being similarly manipulative towards Sonic as Mephiles was to Silver and Shadow. However, it seems impossible for Solaris to actually exist due to his flame being blown out at the end of Sonic the Hedgehog (2006).
  • Prior to The End's true colors being revealed and when it was simply known as a voice guiding Sonic, some fans were able to theorize that they were just leading him on from the start.
  • It has been noted that the Chaos Emeralds were initially used as Cyber Space's primary power source, which subsequently would keep The End in place, and that Sonic was therefore essentially using that same power source to fight off many of the other villains in the franchise.
    • This has therefore led to fans theorizing that this could be the reason why The End appears to know about Sonic's endeavors at all, as well as why it relied on him for its eventual escape. Because of him using the power of the emeralds, he's essentially weakening the seal that keeps The End in place.
  • According to the game's director Morio Kishimoto, The End never actually showed its true appearance in the game. This is because The End's appearance varies from person to person, serving as a visual representation of what they perceive death itself to look like. This extends to the player's perception of The End's appearance; according to Kishimoto, The End's moon form is merely what the player sees during the final battle, while Sonic and Sage see something else entirely.
  • There was supposed to be a boss battle like all the other Titans in the base game, but it was changed into a shoot 'em up battle due to the approaching deadline. This was repurposed for The Final Horizon.
  • The game never specified if The End was aware of the existence of Solaris, a previous god-like entity that Sonic had fought, and seemed to have similar capabilities as The End, but had been wiped from existence after its flame was put out by Princess Elise, thus erasing the events of Sonic The Hedgehog (2006) from the timeline, and therefore should have forgotten Solaris' existence afterwards as it was reading his mind. Despite this, Sonic does seem to recall Solaris' existence according to the Japanese script of Sonic Team Racing.
  • As with Sage, The End's personality is drastically different in the Japanese dub of the game. In stark contrast to the English localization, where The End is completely delusional to an arrogant degree and takes enjoyment on the suffering it puts on others, The End in the Japanese dub sees itself as a genuinely benevolent force, trying to put order onto a chaotic universe like in the English dub, but also trying to save others from suffering and of their own free will. It also states that it has existed even when the primordial universe started existing, whereas the English dub never specified how old it is. Additionally, the End develops genuine respect for Sonic the Hedgehog after realizing what life truly is. Therefore, the Japanese version of the End is Near Pure Evil whereas its English counterpart is Pure Evil.
  • According to Ian Flynn, the original landscape of Chaos Island was that of an alpine forest. However, during its attack on Earth while chasing the Ancients, The End had caused volcanic eruptions around the planet when it struck Chaos Island, leading it to the island's dead, rocky landscape. The overall damage this has caused to the rest of the planet is also present in the cutscene where the Ancients attempt to fight The End, where bits of light are seen glowing on the planet. He states that this was originally going to be explicitly stated in the game, but voice lines of it didn't make the cut.
    • Additionally, Ian Flynn mentioned that The End's destruction of the Ancients' planet wasn't instantaneous, but that as the Ancients fled the planet, The End "feasted" on their world before giving chase. Therefore, it can be assumed that its destruction of planets is more akin to being near-instantaneous as it briefly takes time to "feast" on the world its destroying. Despite this, it's unclear as to what "feasting" in the context of The End destroying worlds truly means, although it's likely that, given The End's nature, it was absorbing the world's' energy to become more powerful.
  • When asked on the BumbleKast, if The End is the strongest enemy Sonic has ever faced, Ian Flynn gave the opinion that Solaris is probably the most powerful, with The End in second place.
  • Despite the fact that Dr. Eggman is Sonic's archenemy, The End serves as a foil to Sonic and the complete antithesis of him, even more so than Eggman and other villains before it. The End is a nihilistic cosmic abomination that wants to box others into a world anathema of light or existence, and attempts to crush the hope of those that confront it, making it an embodiment of order. Sonic, on the other hand, is a free-spirited being that embraces the freedom of others, and always pushes forward no matter how hard things seem, and encourages others to do the same, which makes Sonic an embodiment of chaos by comparison.
  • In many languages, the voice actors of The End play another character in Sonic Frontiers:
    • In the the French and Italian dubs, the female voice actresses of The End also voiced Sage.
    • In the English, French, and Italian dubs, the male voice actors of The End also voiced Dr. Eggman.
    • In the English and Spanish dubs, the female voice actresses for The End also voiced Amy Rose.
    • In the Spanish dub, the male voice actor of The End also voiced Big the Cat.
  • In Sonic Superstars, a purple moon with an appearance similar to The End can be seen in the background of Egg Fortress Zone. However, this was merely an easter egg as Ian Flynn confirmed that this is not The End itself.
  • The End's defeat in The Final Horizon parallels Eggman's announcement in Sonic Adventure 2, with Eggman firing a super-powered blue laser at a moon causing major damage.
