~ The Engineer |
The Engineer is a minor antagonist in the AMC series Into the Badlands.
He is the sadistic main Overseer of the Bordeaux Mines, a mine in the Outlands that relies on forced labor in order to harvest minerals. As one of the few leaders in the Outlands, he is extremely cruel towards the Pickers working for him, gleefully killing any who become ill, and forcing those who fail to meet their mining quota to fight to the death.
He was portrayed by Stephen Walters, who also played Mad Twatter in Skins.
Personality[]
The Engineer is shown to be a highly sadistic man, taking great joy in his status as the leader of a mining operation that is run based off of slavery. He was genuinely enraged at the death of Mouse, and the two appeared to be friends, showing that the Engineer did value people who were useful to him, but saw the Pickers as completely expendable. He would generally go out of his way to be cruel to the Pickers, such as when he killed those who were ill and taunting Sunny over the fact that he was going to die there. He would even do this when it wasn't beneficial to him, as he chained Sunny and Bajie together when they fought Mouse so that they would lose, even though Sunny was a superior fighter to Mouse and would have made a better champion.
Biography[]
The Engineer is the main Overseer of the Bordeaux Mines, having successfully run the operation for years. At some point in time, a man named Bajie would end up in the slave trade and eventually be sold to the Bordeaux Mines. After a man named Sunny, the most feared and dangerous Clipper in the Badlands, ends up enslaved by the River King, he is sold into the slave trade and becomes a miner of the Bordeaux Mines as well. During Sunny's introduction to the mines, the Engineer gives him and the other new Pickers a speech on what their purpose as Pickers will be, to simply mine until they die. When one of the Pickers throws up, the Engineer orders him to be executed, seeing him as defective. Sunny, not willing to let an innocent person be killed, attacks the Engineer's guards to save the sick man. Sunny kills several of them due to his superior fighting ability, but is eventually overpowered by two guards who use whips to bind Sunny's ankles and hoist him into the air. The Engineer then approaches Sunny and tells him that he doesn't care who Sunny is, because if this is where he has ended up, this is where he will die. He then punches Sunny in the face to knock him out. That night, the Engineer informs the Pickers that they exceeded their normal quota, and as such he will reward them with a fight night, where they can watch workers who did not meet their quota fight Mouse, the Engineer's champion. Due to Sunny and Bajie being chained together as mining partners, Bajie finds out that Sunny is a former Clipper, and eventually tells the Engineer about it in hopes of being rewarded. The Engineer then puts Sunny into a fight with Mouse, saying that if he defeats him then Sunny will be his new champion. However, he chains Bajie to Sunny and makes them fight Mouse together, saying that he doesn't trust that Bajie won't betray him since he just tried to betray Sunny. The two of them end up overpowering Mouse despite being chained to each other due them both being highly skilled in combat. They then flee from the mines, escaping through and air vent and killing Mouse. The Engineer is enraged at this, and puts out a bounty on the two of them, prompting hunters from all across the Outlands to search for them.
Powers & Abilities[]
- Leadership: The Engineer was one of the few examples of someone being able to establish a hierarchy in the Outlands, an area usually overrun with nomad scavengers, as he ran perhaps the largest and most successful operation outside of the Badlands.
- Trading: The Engineer showed himself capable of running a massive trading operation which handled both minerals and Cog slaves.
Trivia[]
- Considering the River King describes Sunny as a "very valuable commodity" before selling him into slavery, it is unlikely he directly sold him to the Engineer, as the Pickers are considered expendable, meaning it's more likely Sunny was traded between several parties before ending up in the Bordeaux Mines.
