The Engineer is the overarching antagonist of the horror novel Hellbound Heart, written by Clive Barker and the inspiration for the film Hellraiser.
It is a mysterious entity that dominates and commands the Order Di Gash, the sect of demons known as Cenobites. Whether he is the creator of these demons is unspecified, but he also creates the various torture devices used by the Cenobites on the condemned in Hell, and is charged with making sure that the lament configuration gets to a new person after its previous user it was vindicated. He has the appearance of a human head surrounded by a halo of clear fire. Given that, within the continuity of the novel, the existence of Leviathan is not mentioned and it seems that Heaven also exists together with the Hell of the Cenobites, the Engineer therefore carries out the task of lord of the Cenobites.
History[]
The Engineer is mentioned by Frank Cotton at the beginning of the novel, when he asks the Cenobites why he didn't show up with them after solving the Lament Configuration Box puzzle. Later, at the end of the book, the demon appears to Kirsty under Julia Cotton's wedding veil, then hands her the Lament Configuration Box while waiting for someone else to come and claim it.
Movie[]
In Hellraiser and in its script volume, the Engineer is a completely different character: he is a deformed and repulsive-looking monster with low intelligence who serves the Cenobites and Leviathan (Satan in the continuity formed by the volume of the script and the novels Scarlet Gospels and Hellraiser: The Toll) and, after Kirsty solves the puzzle box, pursues her intending to kill and devour her. At the end of the film, Kirsty will send him back to Hell together with the Cenobites.
