The Evil Queen is the main antagonist of the 1987 adaptation of Snow White. She is the film's version of the Evil Queen from the original fairy tale.

She was portrayed by the late Diana Rigg, who also portrayed Sandie in Last Night in Soho, Winifred Gillyflower in Doctor Who, and Mrs. Danvers in the 1997 TV miniseries adaptation of Rebecca.

Biography[]

After the Good Queen dies, leaving behind their baby daughter Snow White, the King marries The Evil Queen, a vain woman who practices witchcraft, some years after the Good Queen's death to serve as a motherly figure to Snow White. The Queen possesses a Magic Mirror, which she asks every night who is the fairest in the land and every time the Mirror answers that she is the fairest. When the Queen finds out that Snow White is now the fairest in the land instead of her, she summons her Hunter and demands that he kill Snow White and to give her her liver as proof that she is dead. During a hunting trip, the Hunter takes Snow White to the forest and tells her of the Queen's plan. He then tells her to run away into the forest and never return. Snow White runs into the forest and finds a house belonging to seven dwarf miners named Iddy, Biddy, Kiddy, Diddy, Fiddy, Giddy, and Liddy who let her live with them in order to protect her from the Queen. The Hunter kills a wild goat, removes its liver, and brings it to the Evil Queen who eats it, thinking it is Snow White's liver. The King is later killed in battle.

Years later, Snow White becomes an adult woman and the Magic Mirror tells the Evil Queen that Snow White is still the fairest in the land, much to the Queen's anger. The Queen disguises herself as a saleswoman and goes to the Dwarves' cottage while they are at work in the mine. The Queen goes into the cottage and fastens a lace around Snow White's waist too tightly, making her pass out. The Queen returns to the palace, thinking she is dead. When the Dwarves return home, they successfully revive Snow White. After taking a bubble bath, the Queen asks the Magic Mirror who the fairest is. The Mirror replies that Snow White still is and that the Dwarves saved Snow White. The Queen uses an oriental potion to poison one of her combs and disguises herself as a Japanese geisha saleswoman. The Queen once again goes to the Dwarves' cottage while they are at work, and poisons Snow White with the comb by sticking it in her hair. The Dwarves once again revive Snow White by removing the comb and destroying it. After the Magic Mirror once again tells the Queen that Snow White survived and is still the fairest, the Queen enters her secret laboratory behind the Mirror and uses her magic to make a two toned apple with one poisoned red half and one non-poisoned white half and adds a meal worm to the white half. She disguises herself as a farmer and once again goes to the Dwarves' cottage while they are at work. She offers Snow White the apple through the window, eating the worm-filled white half, and successfully poisoning Snow White with the poisoned red half. The Dwarves return to work to discover Snow White dead. Unable to revive her, they put her in a glass coffin.

A prince comes and offers to take Snow White to a proper burial place. While on the way, the coffin falls due to a tree being pushed down due to a blizzard, which forces the piece of poisoned apple out of Snow White's throat which hits the Queen while she is asleep. The Prince and Snow White become engaged and the Magic Mirror tells the Queen that the Prince's soon-to-be wife is the fairest in the land. Infuriated, the Queen smashes the Mirror, which causes her to age rapidly and her clothes to tear. She discovers the Prince is marrying Snow White and while attempting to leave the wedding, she disintegrates.
