The Families are the main characters in the 2004 video game, Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas. They are an African-American based gang founded in Los Santos, San Andreas, that is comprised of Grove Street Families, Seville Boulevard Families and Temple Drive Families. The gang is led by brothers, Sean and Carl Johnson.
History[]
Around the 1960's, The Families were all enemies, it is unknown why, but it is still a present fact. Around the late 1980's, Sean "Sweet" Johnson became leader of Grove Street Families, with his youngest brother, Brian dying in a gang shootout, most likely due to a mistake made by Carl. This caused tension in the family, with Carl moving to Liberty City to become a hustler.
By 1992, long time GSF members, Melvin "Big Smoke" Harris and Lance "Ryder" Wilson betray the family by setting up a drive-by shooting along with corrupt police officers, Frank Tenpenny and Eddie Pulaski of C.R.A.S.H. and GSF's long time rivals, The Ballas, all in order to kill the leader of the family, Sweet himself. The plan goes awry however as instead of killing Sweet, they instead kill his mother, Beverley.
Soon after, Carl returns to Los Santos in order to pay his respects, but instead falls into the palms of Tenpenny and Pulaski, who make Carl do all of their dirty work. After this, Carl reunites with Big Smoke, Ryder, his sister Kendl and more importantly his brother, Sweet. Kendl is revealed to be dating Cesar Vialpando, leader of Varrios Los Aztecas, allowing the GSF to have another ally. Later, GSF, SBF and TDF reconcile, and become one, aka "The Families". After this, the gang is betrayed as Big Smoke and Ryder and revealed to Carl as traitors with Carl now being distant from the families and with Sweet in jail.
With the help of several different people, Carl returns to Los Santos with Sweet released from prison. The two argue and bicker as the "hood" is now deserted with their now being no leader. Eventually, the brothers reclaim their territory with the help of Cesar. In the end, Carl takes down Big Smoke and Tenpenny with the Families becoming the most powerful gang in Los Santos history.
