Biography[]
Early life[]
Before the events of the film, he might've been just a normal farmer with a wife and son but then trespassers accidentally killed his wife and this left him with a hatred of trespassers to the point of wanting to hurt them.
He would then decide to have them strung up as scarecrows on his cornfield via stitching their mouths shut, injecting them in the neck with paralysis, and nailing them to the cross, being left to die by the birds.
Scarecrows (2017)[]
He first appears in the opening of the film, stringing a woman up in the fields and leaving her for the birds.
Later, a group of four friends arrive, and they are Ash, Farbsie, Ely, and Devon, who are arriving for a weekend trip. But as the girls get out to pee, the boys find one of the crows dropping a human thumb on the car, only for them to try to hide it to avoid trouble with the police about a missing thumb. As the friends leave the car and travel in the cornfield, one of the victims managed to get off a cross and get the stitches off. But as he calls for help, the farmer encounters him and kills him with a scythe after a short chase.
After the friends were done using the water, they attempt to head back to the car, only to find it missing. Unbeknownst to them, the farmer had stolen their car and this left the group stranded at the area.
They soon notice the farmer and shout for his attention, unaware of his true nature and intentions, but he just ignores them, walking away into the field. After they are unable to get help from him, they decided to follow by sneaking through the fence, but Farbsie gets hurt while crawling through it, leaving Ely to have to use his shirt to wrap the wound.
Once they stop at one of the scarecrows, Ely and Devon decided to split up and leave Ash and Farbsie with the scarecrow to go get help. However, they end up having an affair along the way due to Devon's lack of care towards Ash and Farbsie. However, they encounter the farmer and get attacked by him, leaving to them getting wounded and captured by him. In the farm, Devon is strapped to the chair and gets her lips stitched shut by the farmer, who then knocks her out.
Back at the scarecrow, Farbsie is taking a dump in the fields but Ash notices something strange about the scarecrow and investigates to find bloody nails on the hands and maggots on the mask, much to her disgust. Back at the farm, Devon wakes up to find the farmer bringing Ely in and tying him to a rocking chair before picking up the syringe. However, Devon ends up pulling the stitches on her mouth loose while crying for help this leads to the farmer injecting her with the paralytic fluid instead, and placing a scarecrow mask over her head. By nighttime, Farbsie has also gone missing and this leaves Ash alone in the field. She begins to call out for her friends, but then encounters the farmer's son, who advises her to be quiet and follow him if she wants to live.
While the farmers son is taking her to the farm, Ash notices the group's car and starts to not trust the man due to him and his father stealing the car earlier. However, he still reminds her that she has no choice but to trust him. Inside the farm, he then warns her about what is going on and explains the reason it's been happening; his father became very upset by the loss of his wife, caused when a previous group of people trespassed on the farm and accidentally killed her. Since then, the farmer has held an intense hatred for any and all trespassers on his land. Just as he finishes the story, they hear the farmer arriving, and the son warns Ash to hide, which she does. As the farmer comes inside, the son apologizes to him about the broken latch. But the farmer doesn't seem to care about the latch and just gestures him to bring in Farbsie, who is revealed to have also been captured earlier.
After putting Farbsie in the chair, the farmer takes a sheet off and reveals Ely to have now been dressed as a scarecrow, with his mouth now stitched shut and paralyzed from the neck down. Upon tying Ely to a cross, the farmer starts nailing the right arm to it, causing Ely to emit muffled screams of pain and agony while Ash watches on in shock and horror,
Before he can nail Ely's left arm, Ash gets out of hiding to stop him and tries to kill him, but the farmer quickly stops her and headbutts her unconscious. The son is unable to help her and reluctantly helps the farmer restrain her. In the fields, the farmer and the son string Ely up on the fields and the former puts the mask on Ely's head, leaving him to moan in pain and to be killed by the birds.
In the farm, Ash wakes up and is tied to the chair, but the son has a change of heart and decides to free her. She’s temporarily paralyzed, leaving him to carry her along. However, the farmer returns and confronts his son for his betrayal, but the son finally calls his father out on his misdeeds and reminding him that what happened to his mother was an accident, wanting him to let Ash go. At first, the farmer does listen and seems to let Ash go after his son gives him the knife, while asking him and his mother to please forgive him for turning against them. However, the farmer shows his lack of redemption and forgiveness by stabbing the unnamed son in the neck and watching as he bleeds to death on the floor.
In the fields, Ash starts trying to find her friends, but then comes across a scarecrow. She unmasks it to check if it's Ely, only for it to be Devon, who has tragically died of blood loss and from the birds. Horrified by her friend's death, Ash takes one of the nails off of the corpse and decides to use it as a weapon to kill the farmer. She wants revenge for what happened to her and the group, along with stopping him from harming anyone else.
After coming across another scarecrow, she hopes that it's Ely but then gets horrified to find that it's the farmer, who disguised himself as a scarecrow to trap her. While fighting against him, she trips, and he pins her down. She removes his mask and stabs him in the cheek with the nail to try to kill him, but it only wounds and angers him. She then resorts to kicking him down before continuing to run.
As Ash continues to run away, she hears muffled cries for help and comes across another scarecrow, who she unmasks, and discovers it's Farbsie. Wanting to save him, she tries to pull one of the nails out, but that just leaves him in more pain and causes him to emit more screams of pain. As she then tries using a shovel, the farmer appears and pins her down again while choosing to choke her, but Farbsie distracts him by uttering a curse through his stitched mouth. The farmer just whacks him in the head with the shovel, knocking him out and most likely killing him. After doing so, he then realizes the trick and continues his chase for Ash.
While she is running, she encounters the farmer again and continues running, but then trips and hits her head on a rock, knocking her out for a bit and leaving her unable to run. Upon slowly recovering, she sees a couple's car and starts crawling to it while shouting for help, but due to the car's loud music and her being on the ground, the couple are unable to notice her. As she goes to open the car door, the farmer appears and drags her inside the cornfields as she screams in horror, the scene fading to black ominously.
The next day, the farmer strings up another scarecrow and as the birds attack it, the mask falls off, and it's revealed to be Ash; it is heavily implied that she is the very same lady from the beginning of the film, creating a cyclical ending. As she looks around and sees her friends strung up around her, already dead, she is left to do only one thing - scream for help that will never come. This also leaves the farmer to get away with everything. In the post-credits, 3 fishermen appear at the same spot and about to go fishing at the lagoon, unaware of the horrors that will happen. They fail to notice a severed female finger on the ground nearby, the only sign of what is to come…
Personality[]
The farmer is clearly a vengeful, sadistic, unforgiving, misanthrope, and a twisted man who hates trespassers and just resorts to very horrible methods to supposedly punish them. Despite not talking nor showing emotion, he does seem to show sadism at torturing Devon, even showing a small smirk.
However, he does seem to love his son and shows some remorse for killing him. It is also implied that he still feels deep sorrow over his late wife.
Appearance[]
The farmer is a bald and muscular Caucasian man wearing a black gator hat, sleeveless jacket with nothing underneath, black ripped pants, dirty boots, and a strong belt that holds many tools he uses. It also helps him restrain his victims.
Trivia[]
- Despite getting away with everything, there's a chance that Farbsie's uncle Sheldon will declare the group missing to his car being the one that the group used. While this wouldn’t help Farbsie and his friends, perhaps there is hope of the farmer’s reign of terror one day coming to an end.
