For you, my friend; dark, devouring despair - served ice cold!
~ The Fear of Loss before attacking Dusty and Piper

The Fear of Loss, also known as The Thief, is the overarching antagonist of the puzzle adventure game Figment by Bedtime Digital Games. The Fear of Loss is a Nightmare, one of many evil, phobia-based beings who terrorizes the Mind, the world inside a young man's mind. As his name indicates, he represents the fear of losing loved ones and other important people or things.

The Fear of Loss was voiced by Claus Flindt Bjerg.

Biography[]

The Fear of Loss first appeared in the Mind after the young man who owns the Mind was involved in a terrible car accident. This accident left the young man unconscious for a significant amount of time, during which he seemed to have been hospitalized, and his family feared that he might not wake up. This affliction allowed the Fear of Loss to enter his mind.

The Fear of Loss's first crime was to steal the beloved scrapbook of Dusty, the retired guardian of the Mind. This happened just as Piper, another resident of the Mind, was trying to convince Dusty to come out of retirement to fight the three Nightmares who had invaded the Mind. Although Dusty lacked interest in fighting for the Mind, the Fear of Loss's act of theft motivated Dusty to chase the Fear of Loss in an attempt to get his scrapbook back.

The Fear of Loss continuously ran from Dusty and Piper throughout their adventure. Sometimes he summoned Nightmare minions to hold them off. Other times he used darkness-based attacks to fight them himself, often while singing snippets of his villain song, The Fear of Loss, Pt. 1. He also used his dark energy to clog up a gate in Cerebrum City, preventing Dusty and Piper from following him until they defeated the other two Nightmares in the Mind, the Plague and the Spider Queen.

Eventually, Dusty and Piper reached the Pathway, where they continued their chase with the Fear of Loss, who continued to evade them while sending more minions and darkness attacks at them. Dusty began to feel demoralized, thinking would never beat the Fear of Loss. At one point, the Fear of Loss trapped Dusty and Piper between two walls of darkness, moving them slowly towards the pair to draw out their demise. Just when Dusty lost hope, Piper saved them by countering the Fear of Loss's song with her own song about how life does have meaning after all.

Finally, the duo cornered the Fear of Loss, forcing him to fight to the death. During the final battle, the Fear of Loss sang the second part of his song, The Fear of Loss, Pt. 2 as he tried desperately to convince Dusty and Piper to give up and die. However, they pulled through and managed to beat him.

With no other options, the Fear of Loss held Dusty's scrapbook over a bottomless pit, forcing Dusty to choose between killing the Fear of Loss or saving his scrapbook. However, due to Dusty's character development, he no longer cared about the scrapbook and instead wanted to return to his duty as protector of the Mind. Therefore, Dusty had no problem killing the Fear of Loss with one final sword slash, reducing him to purple slime and letting the scrapbook fall.

Appearance[]

The Fear of Loss is a thin, dark purple monster with four spindly arms and two, goatlike legs. His face is a purple, birdlike mask with angry red eyes.

Personality[]

As the living personification of loss, the Fear of Loss is a nihilist who believes that nothing in life matters, and anything that people value will eventually fade away. He despises hope and optimism and repeatedly tries to force his philosophy on others, demoralizing them as much as possible.

He also has a sadistic streak. He constantly cackles as he tries to harm others, and at one point, when he thinks he has Dusty and Piper trapped, he tries to draw out their deaths to relish in their suffering. He uses terms of endearment like "my friend," but does so facetiously.

He also has a bit of an ego. He's proud of the fact that he represents a deep kind of trauma, as opposed to The Plague and the Spider Queen, who represent simpler phobias (disease and spiders respectively), and as such, he considers himself superior to them.

Another notable trait is his cowardice. He spends most of the game running from Dusty and Piper, distracting them with minions and projectile attacks as often as he can. When Dusty and Piper finally have him beat, he tries to force Dusty to make a difficult choice between killing him or saving Dusty's scrapbook, but he doesn't anticipate that Dusty no longer values the scrapbook and instead wants to protect the Mind.
