“ | He didn't speak, but I knew. The Candleman wanted me to open myself to this place. Yes, he has for a while now. Every night. Oh, I can see it all. A web. He's... been with me this whole time. Watching. Observing. Waiting. | „ |
~ Noone's description of the Ferryman. |
The Ferryman, also known as The Candleman, is the main antagonist of the Little Nightmares franchise.
He is a giant monster with sagging skin for a face who travels throughout the world, making contact with children who have suffered severe trauma and luring them to a parallel dimension called the Nowhere.
Characteristics[]
As revealed in the Sounds of Nightmares the Ferryman is a being that works to convince children to stay in the nightmare dimension known as the Nowhere. Speaking in riddles, the Ferryman was able to convince the young protagonist Noone to stay in the Nowhere with promises of her pain leaving her forever. Both intelligent and manipulative, it was implied that the Ferryman was able to coerce more children aside from Noone into giving themselves up to the Nowhere.

The Ferryman, unlike most giant humanoids we see in the series, is actually very polite and gentle. Upon finding a child, he will offer his hand and escort them to their location, as apposed to the others who scream and grab them. We do see that he pointed to Six in a middle of a crowed and drew attention to them, but how he went about taking the child to his ship is unknown.
Appearance[]
He appears to be humanoid, but his face is very rotten and is sagging down to his chest. He has two holes in his face where his eyes should be. His skin appears to be a mix between green-and-yellowish color. He dresses in a grey trench coat and a grey hat with a stripe on it. He is just as big, if not bigger, in size as compared to the other giant enemies in the game. His feet/leg region is never visible, but sometimes you are able to make out a faint shadow.
History[]
Little Nightmares: Secrets of the Maw[]
A painting of the Ferryman appears in the walls of The Lady's quarters in the Little Nightmares DLC "The Residence". In the cameo he is standing at the edge of his docked fishing boat, only the side of his body being shown.
Little Nightmares Comic Series[]
Issue[]
In the first issue, he is first seen finding Six in a city filled with guest-like figures in a city. He stares down at Six and points, drawing attention to them. The figures then all point and chase after Six. Offscreen, the Ferryman obtains Six and takes her to his boat. A later flashback shows one of the holes in the Lady's mask zooming in on a flashback of the Ferryman rowing Six to the Maw.
He is seen again to have been disguised as one of the children's siblings in a flashback. After the North Wind reveals to have had the boy's body the whole time, The Ferryman grans and transforms back into his true form. He walks out of the barn, offers the child his hand, and takes him away which scares away The North Wind. Offscreen he takes the child to the Maw.
Issue 2[]
In issue 2, he appears at the end of the comic busting open the door of an old mansion-like house with the Hunchback Child in front of him. He offers his hand to them, which they take. They are seen walking off into the distance, presumably to his boat that he would use to take the child to the Maw.
The Sounds of Nightmares[]
In the audio-fiction series, The Sounds of Nightmares, The Ferryman (referred to as the Candleman) serves as the overarching antagonist. Throughout the series, the Ferryman made various cameos in the nightmares of the main protagonist, Noone. The secondary protagonist, the Counsellor, was intrigued by his presence because he believed the Ferryman to have a connection to his long-lost sister, Sisi.
Throughout the series, the Ferryman would speak to Noone in riddles. Through tactics of manipulation, the Ferryman was able to convince Noone to stay in the Nowhere forever. In the final chapter, the Ferryman met Noone in the Threshold and led her through a door where it was implied that she would forever stay in the Nowhere.

Trivia[]
- The Ferryman's role as a villain used to be controversial, as the children's role on the Maw was unknown. It wasn't until the second DLC's release that we learned that they were in fact the bodies being put into the meat sacks.
- When the Lady appeared in issue 1, the comic questioned what she "had seen". It then revealed an image of The Ferryman in her eyehole. On top of this, his picture was hung in the Maw. This suggests that the Ferryman and the Lady are very well acquainted.
- The North Wind mentions loosing a wager to someone. It is assumed that this is the Ferryman, as he pretended to be the child's sister and the North Wind was scared away after his reveal.
- The Ferryman is one of the only comic book original characters to have been recognized in one of the games other than a jack-in-the-box in Very Little Nightmares.
- The Ferryman makes a cameo appearance as a jack-in-the-box in Very Little Nightmares.
