He was one of the four white men in Japan when I was born. One of them took my mother, and made me a monster.
~ Mizu on the Four White Devils.

The Four White Devils are the main antagonists of the Netflix animated series Blue Eye Samurai. They were four British smugglers who traded in drugs, weapons and slaves.

They were the only white men in Japan, since they were secretly allowed by the shogun to trade their wares there as long as they hid their existence. Working with various Japanese lords, they were able to make a fortune. Due to the power they held, they slept with many women, with one of them fathering a little girl named Mizu, giving her blue eyes and killing her mother, starting her quest for revenge against all four.

Members[]

  • Violet: A drug dealer easily killed by Mizu when she entered his mansion and quickly slit his throat.
  • Abijah Fowler: An arms dealer allied with Heiji Shindo. He became Mizu's prisoner after his attempt to take over Japan failed.
  • Skeffington: A slave trader who at some point left Japan and went to London with Routley.
  • Routley: A slave trader who at some point left Japan and went to London with Skeffington.

History[]

At some point in time, Violet, Fowler, Skeffington, and Routley came together to request permission from Shogun Ito to enter Japan to sell their wares. Shogun Ito allowed them too, under the condition that they would give him a portion of what they sold every year, and that they stayed in four towers scattered around the country. The four men became fabulously wealthy and lived in luxury. At one point, one of them impregnated a woman and had her killed once she gave birth. However, the baby survived.

At some point, Skeffington and Routley returned to London and Violet was killed by a mysterious assassin, leaving only Fowler. Tired of living under the shogun's rules and seeking more power, Fowler set out to overthrow the Ito clan and take Japan for himself with the help of Heiji Shindo. He was able to smuggle in hundreds of guns to arm Shindo's men and attacked the city. However, after killing the shogun, he was attacked by the same assassin who killed Violet. The assassin, a woman named Mizu who was the child of the woman one of the white men impregnated, allowed him to live on the condition that he would help her find Skeffington and Routley in London.

Trivia[]

  • Four is considered an unlucky number in Japan, due to it carrying connotations of death, which explains the number of white devils.
