Mamma mia, a wooden boy!
~ The Cat's most famous line before shooting Pinocchio.

The Fox and the Cat are the secondary antagonists of the 2021 Russian animated fantasy film Pinocchio: A True Story. They are the minions of Modjafocco.

The Fox was voiced by Alexander Gavrilin in Russian and Stephan Thomas Ochsner in English. The Cat was voiced by Diomid Vinogradov in Russian and Andrei Kurganov in English.

Appearance[]

The Fox is a tall and slim anthropomorphic red fox with green eyes. He wears a red fez hat, a brown jacket under a white sweater, a black belt with a gray buckle, greyish black pants and white boots.

The Cat is a short and chubby anthropomorphic British Shorthair with grey fur and pink snout that has the same green eyes and red fez hat like the Fox. But the difference is that he wears clown clothing that is purple and white, accompanied by red and yellow stripes and a crimson red belt with a grey buckle.

Biography[]

The Fox and the Cat are first seen in a meeting with their boss Modjafocco, who was angered that their latest performances were not getting enough audience. The Cat suggests an act where he shoots the Fox who would catch the bullets with his teeth. When the Fox refuses, the Cat shoots his gun in the ceiling of the tent in frustration, accidentally startling the horse of Bella's carriage, Modjafocco's adopted daughter. The Fox and the Cat quickly run after the runaway horse. The carriage is saved by Pinocchio before it heads over a cliff. The Cat is shocked at seeing a living wooden boy and shoots him, but he is unaffected by the bullet. Modjafocco sees potential in Pinocchio and his talking steed Tybalt and recruits them into the circus.

Over time, the circus becomes popular thanks to Pinocchio's acrobatic talents. While everyone was distracted by the circus performances, the Fox and the Cat snuck into the houses of the townsfolk and stole their valuables. Detective Broni believes Pinocchio to be the suspect. One night, Bella eavesdrop on Modjafocco, the Cat, and the Fox discussing their plan to keep Pinocchio from leaving so they could profit at max value. She encourages Pinocchio to leave by rejecting his declaration of love for her. The Fox and the Cat come up to the distraught Pinocchio and taunt him, telling him that Bella could never love him because he was just a puppet. Then after Fantozzi tells Pinocchio of Lucilda the fairy who could turn him into a real boy, the Fox and the Cat watch him ride away on Tybalt. The Cat suggests that they tell Modjafocco, but the Fox tells him that they could first deceive Pinocchio since he still has five gold coins.

Believing they can bribe Pinocchio of his coins, the two set up a tent in the forest that Pinocchio finds. The Fox disguises himself as a fairy, telling Pinocchio that he must pay five gold coins for a wish. Tybalt is first to realize it may be a scam and prevents Pinocchio from paying. Losing patience, the Cat (disguising himself with a white sack over his head) demands them to pay by pointing his gun at the two. Pinocchio kicks the Cat down and escapes on Tybalt. The Cat shoots at them but misses and they get away. The Fox comes out and yells at the Cat for ruining things by jumping out.

The next morning, the two tell Modjafocco about Pinocchio escaping. Enraged, he threatens to strangle them to death if they don't bring him back by the grand performance that night. They tell him that Pinocchio promised to return before the performance. Once Pinocchio returned that evening, the Fox and the Cat lock him up in a carriage until the show.

During the show, Bella sings a song revealing Modjafocco, the Cat, and the Fox as thieves. The Fox and the Cat quickly rush in to control the jeering audience, claiming that the robberies were Modjafocco's plan, not theirs. When Modjafocco throws a lantern at Pinocchio, the whole circus tent is set ablaze. While Modjafocco and the Fox are quickly apprehended, the Cat grabs Bella and holds her hostage to make his getaway. He ends up fleeing when the tent starts collapsing, only to be caught and the con artists are arrested.
