~ The Gasp sadistically taunting Serena Menaker when she begs for mercy.
Your suffering has barely begun.
~ The Gasp to Riley.

The Gasp is a major antagonist of the 2022 reboot of Hellraiser which is an adaptation of and a prequel to Clive Barker's 1986 horror novella The Hellbound Heart. She is the second in command among the Cenobites and right hand to her leader and priest Pinhead.

Much like her priest, she dutifully serves The Leviathan and is among the cenobites who is tasked by Pinhead to bring and torture any souls in The Labyrinth who were lured in unwillingly by Riley McKendry after she is marked by The Configuration Box.

She was portrayed by Selina Lo.

Biography[]

Early life[]

Nothing is known of her early life, but it is assumed that she was once a human who either lived a traumatic life or had dark desires before discovering the Configuration Box and solving it, hence, being tortured and mutilated before becoming a Cenobite where she would bring and torture any living beings to The Labyrinth under the leadership of her leader and Priest Pinhead. She is also implied to have been present when Roland Voight was tasked by Pinhead into bringing in more victims to solve the puzzle box.

Hellraiser[]

After Riley McKendry solves and opens the Configuration Box without having herself pierced by the blade, saving herself from being marked. The Gasp appears alongside her fellow cenobites and confronts Riley for narrowly escaping the blade from the box. Pinhead then informs Riley to find another soul for the box to mark in exchange for her life. The next day, when Serena Menaker - Roland's former lawyer accidentally opens the Box when Riley and her boyfriend Trevor visits her, Serena pierces herself unintentionally and when they leave, she comes face to face with The Gasp and the other cenobites. Serena begs for mercy but The Gasp sticks a needle down her throat telling her to save her breath for screaming, Serena is then taken to The Labyrinth to be tortured for all eternity.

After Riley McKendry refuses to provide Pinhead several more souls in exchange for her brother Matt back, Pinhead summons The Gasp and the other cenobites to personally take Riley and her friends. After killing The Chatterer cenobite, Riley and her friends are followed by Pinhead, The Gasp and the rest of the cenobites to Roland Voight's mansion where they patiently wait outside for Riley to make a decision. Later on, Riley walks back out and asks to be taken much like her brother Matt but The Gasp taunts her by telling her that Matt was set free before Riley is brought in the mansion by Matt's boyfriend Colin.

After Pinhead and the cenobites were freed and let in the house by Riley after an alive but mutilated Roland Voight summons the Leviathan and traps them behind the steel bars, The Gasp immediately pursues Colin and tortures him with steel wires but is abruptly stopped when Riley stabs Trevor with the box, exchanging him with Colin. The Gasp immediately tortures Trevor with her steel wires and sends him to the Labyrinth. She is last seen with Pinhead warning Riley that her suffering had only just begun when the latter chose to live her life miserably with guilt over bringing Matt back thus, gifting her the Lament Configuration.

Personality[]

Typical of a cenobite, The Gasp dutifully serves Pinhead and in turn, the Leviathan and is relentless in her pursuit for potential victims to be taken to the Labyrinth where she or the other cenobites would torture them. As a result, she is undoubtedly vile and sadistic, taking pleasure in torturing living beings and as well as being subjected to torture herself. While Pinhead carries herself like an insane intellectual, The Gasp carries herself as a perverted sadist and is very expressive of her love for pain and causing pain to other living beings.

She also loves taunting her victims as evident when she shoved a pin down Serena Maneker's throat, telling her to save her breath for screaming as well as defiantly telling Riley that Pinhead "set her brother free" after he was flayed. However, she does keep her word and holds her end of the bargain by sparing her victim when a deal is being reached by her victim either with herself or with Pinhead.

Powers and abilities[]

Pain immunity - Being a cenobite, she is immune to pain and derives sadomasochistic pleasure from painful sensations due to being subjected to years of willing and unwilling torture. Due to the severe mutilation of her body, she is constantly in pain but has gotten used to it.

Immortality - Cenobites never age or rot or decay, The Gasp and her fellow cenobites can live for thousands of years or more. However, she is implied to able to be harmed by the blades from the Configuration Box as well as weaponry and objects from the Labyrinth.

Teleportation - Much like her fellow cenobites, she has the ability to teleport from the Labyrinth to locations on earth. However, her powers seem to be weakened at the presence of the Leviathan and she alongside Pinhead and other cenobites can be outsmarted by living beings by having them trapped behind special puzzle-like steel doors.

Alysídakinesis - The Gasp has the ability to summon her signature thin, barbed wires out of thin air to restrain, mutilate and slice her victims apart.

Trivia[]

  • The Gasp is also the first cenobite to be portrayed by an actress with Asian heritage.
  • She is also the first cenobite to share the similar ability of summoning objects for restraining and torturing others along with Pinhead.
    • While Pinhead summons iron chains with hooks, The Gasp summons thin, steel barbed wires.
  • The Gasp features two distinct traits of earlier Cenobites from the franchise: the skin of her throat being cut and modified into a vaginal shape similar to the Female Cenobite of Hellraiser and Hellbound: Hellraiser II and the skin of the scalp being stretched and pulled down to the shoulders like the Angelique Cenobite of Hellraiser: Bloodline.
