The Gauldur Brothers, consisting of Mikrul, Sigdis, and Jyrik Gauldurson, are three Draugr bosses that are part of the "Forbidden Legend" side quest in The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim that lead to the acquirement of the Gauldur Amulet, which boosts the Dragonborn's health, magicka, and stamina by 30 points apiece at the end of the quest.

History[]

At some point in their lives, the three Gauldur Brothers betrayed their father and stole the Gauldur Amulet, dividing it up between them before going on a rampage of destruction. The High King of Skyrim at the time sent his forces, including his battlemage Lord Geirmund to stop them. The Brothers were captured, imprisoned in separate Nordic tombs, and all records of their crimes were destroyed and their father's deeds erased from history.

The Dragonborn can stumble across this quest to find the brothers through either joining the College of Winterhold, as finding one of them is mandatory to progress through the College quest line as that brother, Jyrik, guards the Eye of Magnus in Saarthal, or finding the book titled "Lost Legends", or going straight to the Nordic tombs of Folgunthur to start dealing with the Brothers there by following the steps of a mage who went looking for Mikrul himself, Daynas Valen.

Once the Dragonborn defeats the Brothers in Folgunthur, Saarthal, and Geirmund's Hall, they head to Reachwater Rock to re-forge the amulet as that is where Archmage Gauldur was entombed. Fighting Mikrul, Sigdis, and Jyrik again there, as the three Brothers intend to face the Dragonborn three-on-one, their father finally awakens from his slumber, and punishes their spirits with banishing them to Oblivion forever, ending their threat. As thanks, Gauldur then restores the fragments into the complete amulet again, and once recovered, the quest is finished.

Each brother fights with a different tactic when engaging the Dragonborn, both in their Draugr form and their spirit form:

  • Mikrul summons Draugr Thralls to help protect him and is armed with the Gauldur Blackblade, an Ancient Nord Sword enchanted to absorb health with each hit.
  • Sigdis summons illusionary doubles of himself to spread confusion over which one is the real him and uses the Gauldur Blackbow, an Ancient Nord Bow enchanted to absorb magicka with each successful hit with an arrow.
  • Jyrik is armed with an Ancient Nord War Axe and uses a magic cloak that protects him from one of the three elements of Destruction magic: Fire, Ice, or Lightning, at any given time, shifting between the element he's immune to at intervals. His Staff, a unique Restoration Magic Stave, deals health and magicka damage against enemies.
