The Great Aja (spelt The Great Asia in the Aeon Genesis translation) is a minor antagonist from the Present Day chapter of Live A Live. He is a Japanese-born Mexican luchador who takes his position as a heel very seriously and is willing to bend rules and resort to cheating to achieve what he wants, and is so short-tempered, he's willing to assault innocent patrons for minor inconveniences.
He was voiced by Koichi Sakaguchi in Japanese and Stephen Fu in English.
Biography[]
The Great Aja was a Japanese man who became a wrestler, mastering the moves of El Rudo, a famed luchador heel. Settling in Mexico, he achieved fame as a heel, but his willingness to bend rules and bite his opponents led to him earning a nickname of the "Angel of Death". His signature moves were Frankensteiner and Tornado Press that involve leaping onto one's opponent.
One day, Masaru Takahara seeked to earn the title of the Strongest and embarked on a journey across the world to find and defeat the world's six greatest fighting masters, the Great Aja among them, and learn their techniques to incorporate into his fighting style. The Great Aja crassly mocked Masaru upon meeting him, and as they fought, he was frequently biting Masaru, with only sporadically using his signature luchador moves. At one point, one of the audience members can respond by calling him out on his cheating and throwing a can at him, to which he responds by brutally beating up the man, much to his son Watanabe's horror, who'll beg Aja to leave his dad alone. In the end, Masaru triumphs over the Great Aja, potentially learning his signature moves after the battle, as the heel could only express his surprise that Masaru was able to beat him.
However, once Masaru has beaten all six champions, they all would be confronted by another challenger: Odie O'Bright. Unlike Masaru, who didn't resort to murder, Odie murdered all six champions and then proceeded to gloat over killing them to Masaru, mentioning the Great Aja and brushing him off as "that gaudy luchador". Hearing him boasting over how he killed them, Masaru was enraged by Odie's vileness and, calling upon everything he learned from the fighting masters and his own fury, he defeated Odie, avenging the masters' deaths, the Great Aja included.
Trivia[]
- The Great Aja appears to be inspired by Keiji Muto, or "the Great Muta", a masked Japanese wrestler renowned for macabre looks and "magical skills".
- Aja is the only character in Live A Live to say the "f-word", forcing the game to censor itself, making him the only character who's verbally censored in the game.
- He's also one of the only two pre-Final chapter villains in the game alongside Mad Dog to not be affiliated with Odio or his chapter's incarnation.
