Marquis de Gramont. A man's ambition should never exceed his worth. You would do well to remember that, sir.
~ The Harbinger warning Marquis about his excessive and destructive ambitions.

The Harbinger is a supporting antagonist in the 2023 action film John Wick: Chapter 4, the fourth installment in the John Wick franchise. He is a high-ranking agent of the High Table who carries out the High Table's orders with utmost efficiency. While completely loyal and subservient to the Table, he is not without his own personal honorable conduct, as he very much disapproves of the way the Marquis operates and unlike him is capable of mercy.

He is portrayed by Clancy Brown, who also played Byron Hadley in The Shawshank Redemption, Viking Lofgren in Bad Boys, the Kurgan in the Highlander film franchise, Mr. Krabs in Spongebob Squarepants, Lex Luthor in the DCAU and other DC animated works, Mr Freeze in The Batman, Uka Uka and Dr. Neo Cortex in the Crash Bandicoot franchise, Hades in God of War III, Trident in Teen Titans, Undertow in The Little Mermaid 2: Return to the Sea, Parallax in Green Lantern, Baron Praxis in Jak II, Taskmaster in Ultimate Spider-Man, Rahzar in the 2012 Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles series, Kurt Caldwell in Dexter: New Blood, Dark Dragon in American Dragon: Jake Long, Grune in Thundercats, Mr. Sinister in Wolverine and the X-Men, the Evil Entity in Scooby-Doo! Mystery Incorporated, Edgar Volgud in Atlantis: Milo's Return, Kojak in Recess: School's Out, Gunmar in Tales of Arcadia, Siege in The Mighty Ducks, Bloodwolf in Puss in Boots, Hakon and Wolf in Gargoyles, Blackhand in Warcraft, Ray Schoonover in Marvel's Daredevil, Surtur in Thor: Ragnarok and Savage Opress in Star Wars: The Clone Wars.

History[]

In the aftermath of the ending of John Wick 3: Parabellum, where Winston supposedly killed John by shooting the latter causing him to fall down the hotel's rooftop, though the High Table found out about Wick's apparent survival. As a result, the Harbinger was sent to the New York Continental to deliver a message about the hotel's condemnation, instructing the manager (Winston) and the concierge (Charon) to immediately evacuate the hotel before its imminent destruction in an hour's time.

Personality[]

The Harbinger is a firm, yet reasonable member of the High Table who always keeps his promises and seeks to only fulfill given orders by his superiors. He even has a sense of kindness as he promises the safety of Caine's daughter despite it not being part of the duel's rewards. He also openly expresses great displeasure with Marquis de Gramont's radical goals and dishonorable actions (although it's not necessarily from the kindness of his heart, as he does it because of personal fear of John Wick, rather than being humane to him). But he does keep his promises, and releases John from obligation to the High Table. He's a more lawful neutral version of Winston.

Trivia[]

  • The Harbinger is missing his ring finger implying that, like John, he ''sold his soul to the High Table''. However unlike John, who turned his back on the table, The Harbinger stayed with the Table resulting in a lifetime servitude.
