The Heretic is an artificially-grown clone of Damian Wayne and the genetic son/right-hand of Talia al Ghul in Batman: Bad Blood.

He was voiced by Travis Willingham, who also voiced Paul De Pleur in Far Cry 4, Shane Bommer in inFAMOUS: Second Son, Harvey Dent/Two-Face in Batman: The Telltale series, Scabrous Scrotus in Mad Max, and The Kingpin in Marvel's Spider Man.

Background[]

The Heretic was created by Ra's al Ghul and the League of Assassins as part of a program to create the perfect soldier. Using a sample of Damian Wayne's DNA, the clones were genetically engineered to grow at an accelerated rate. While most of the clones died, Heretic was the only survivor. Ra's decided to the boy would be raised in the League along with the rest of his family. Eventually programmed with a mind by the Mad Hatter, however, Heretic always felt incomplete due to not sharing the memories and experiences of Damian Wayne.

Batman: Bad Blood[]

Criminal activity conducted by Tusk, Firefly, Killer Moth, and henchmen is interrupted by who they think is Batman, but then gunfire flies at them, revealing it is from Batwoman. Shortly after her, Batman himself enters the fray, but chastising her for using guns and endangering herself, although she rejects his demands. The fight goes to an elevated catwalk, where the Heretic and Onyx appear; Heretic knocks Batwoman off the catwalk, but she is saved by a grappling line from Batman. With his hands full, Batman can't stop Heretic pressing a detonator, which triggers cascading explosions in the warehouse. Batman flings Batwoman out a window and into nearby ocean water, which saves her from the blast. Under the cover of the explosions, Heretic managed to kidnap Batman.

The Heretic and entourage invade Wayne Enterprises, demanding that Lucius Fox open the hidden advanced weaponry division; Lucius pretends to not know what they are talking about, but when his son, Luke, is threatened, he opens the vault. The Heretic stabs Lucius in the back, forcing Luke to hold his father up and hold pressure on the wound. As the Heretic and his crew are gathering their desired inventory, Batman (Dick Grayson) and Robin appear to stop them. The Electrocutioner manages to trap Robin in a stream of electricity, but Heretic orders that he stop; unable to hear his employer, Electrocutioner continues to shock the boy, so Heretic shoots him in the head, and abducts the unconscious Robin.

Mad Hatter experiences immense but enjoyable challenge in probing and brainwashing Bruce Wayne's mind, with the Hatter deeming him a lunatic who defines his life through pain, and has accumulated such extensive experiences that his mind is like deep concrete. In contrast, Hatter mocks Heretic's mind as being as feeble and limited as wet sand.

After having captured Damian Wayne, Heretic revealed his past and plan to transfer Damian's memories into his mind using Hatter's technology. Talia interrupted Heretic's plan and chastised him for making plans behind her back, promising to make him suffer for this insolence. Heretic then had an emotional breakdown, exclaiming about his life already being suffering, and lamented how he's felt incomplete without being able to feel the connection from memories towards Talia. Heretic hugged Talia and begged her to allow the transfer because he wants to love her as a *real* son. Talia feigned sympathy towards Heretic before she executed him via a headshot. Talia concluded Heretic was flawed and ordered Onyx to dispose of his body like trash, which seems to upset Onyx, but she obeys nonetheless.

After Talia's world domination plot failed, with all of her minions dead, she escapes in a swift flying craft. However, hiding in the craft, Onyx descends from the rails; Onyx strikes, while Talia fires a gun. Regardless of the fight's winner, the craft loses control, crashing and exploding into the sea, killing both or the sole survivor, which meant that Onyx successfully avenged Heretic.

Trivia[]

The Heretic has a very similar face to Bruce Wayne, highlighting again the similarity between Damian and Bruce said by Alfred in Son of the Bat.
In Batman: Bad Blood, Heretic has a fully grown adult version of Damian Wayne, unlike the comic version which has a literal baby face.
Mad Hatter mentioned that there multiple other adult clones in storage, but due his death, there wouldn't be anyone capable of providing them with sentience like he did for Heretic; Talia's death would also put the fate of the clones in question, although it's likely they either remained forever without minds in an unknown location or were destroyed during Darkseid's conquest of Earth.
The Heretic is similar to Bane from The Dark Knight Rises.
- Both are muscular masked men who hold an obsession with surpassing Batman.
- They are known only by their infamous monikers.
- They break into Wayne Enterprise's secret R&D, using the technology to advance their plots.
- They are introduced as the main antagonist, but are revealed to be the Heavy for Talia al Ghul (although, for Heretic it is at the end of the First Act; whereas for Bane it is revealed right before the climax)
  - Incidentally, both are killed before the primary danger had been overcome.
