| “ | You are a worm through time. The thunder song distorts you. Happiness comes. White pearls, but yellow and red in the eye. Through a mirror, inverted is made right. Leave your insides by the door. Push the fingers through the surface into the wet. You’ve always been the new you. You want this to be true. We stand around you while you dream. You can almost hear our words but you forget. This happens more and more now. | „ |
| ~ Part of the Hiss's incantation spoken by the Hiss Entities. |
The Hiss is the main antagonist of Remedy Entertainment's Control franchise, being the main antagonist of Control (2019) and FBC: Firebreak (2025) and will return in Control Resonant (2026) in some manner.
It is a resonance-based otherworldly entity originating from an alternate universe known as Slidescape-36. The Hiss became aware of our universe following Jesse and Dylan Faden's discovery of supernatural item called the Slide Projector in Ordinary, Maine, which is capable of opening portals to alternate universes. During the Federal Bureau of Control’s expeditions into Slidescape-36, the Hiss gradually corrupted FBC director Zachariah Trench, manipulating him into unleashing itself into our universe using the Slide Projector.
History[]
Background[]
It's heavily implied that the Hiss was the result of Alan Wake's desperate efforts to escape from the Dark Place, as he wrote the Hiss Incantation which the Hiss used to corrupt Zachariah Trench. He influenced the Hiss so that Jesse would be able to defeat it and become a hero.
Past[]
The Hiss originated from Slidescape-36, an alternate universe which it had already overtaken with its powers. After Jesse Faden burned most of the Slide Projector’s slides, Trench took the surviving Projector to store it in the FBc’s headquarters, the Oldest House. During his expeditions into Slidescape-36 alongside FBC research head Casper Darling, the Hiss subtly manipulated Trench by preying on his insecurities into opening the Projector and unleashing it in the Bureau.
Control[]
The Hiss, now free, managed to possess most of the employees in the Bureau before they managed to seal off the Bureau to prevent it from getting out and possessing the planet. In frustration, the Hiss influenced Trench into killing himself as it attacked various branches to find and kill Hedron, another entity from Slidescape-36 which the Hiss is hostile to.
As a countermeasure, Polaris, an entity linked to Hedron, guided a now-grown up Jesse Faden into the Oldest House, where she was chosen by the Board as the new Director. In preparation to fight the Hiss, Polaris helped Jesse attune to her powers.
Powers and Abilities[]
Powers[]
- Possession: The Hiss's most potent ability, it can possess anyone not empowered by HRAs into being an extension of itself, resulting in the victim being in its complete control and their entire personality overridden in its favor.
- Manipulation: The Hiss could manipulate stronger people by suggestion, which it used to corrupt Zachariah Trench into helping it, and almost managed to break Jesse Faden after killing Hedron.
- Illusion-generation: The Hiss can generate illusions powered by the victim's darkest fears, which only few people can break through. In Jesse's case, it preyed on her fears of remaining an ordinary woman doomed to be under the control of other people to break her into submission.
- Empowering: The Hiss can empower individuals beyond what's humanly possible. Several of the named Hiss Enemies are capable of enhanced durability, strength as well as agility.
Hiss Entities[]
The Hiss can manifest itself in various forms to fulfill its goals. Some of them are:
- Hiss Barriers
- Hiss Clusters
- Hiss Snipers
- Hiss Troopers
- Hiss Rangers
Weaknesses[]
- Hedron: The Hiss cannot possess anyone who is empowered by Hedron Resonance Amplifiers, or Polaris, the sentient representation of Hedron. It is due to this reason that it influenced Trench to open the gates to their universe before Darling completed his HRA projects.
- Need for a Host: The Hiss could only act via a certain host in order to be able to influence our universe, for which reason it corrupted Dylan Faden into becoming its host. After Dylan was cleansed of the Hiss, it was halted in its expansion goals for the time being.
