~ Patricia to the others, contemplating the power of the Beast. |
Kevin Wendell Crumb, collectively referred to with all of his alters as The Horde, is the secondary antagonist of the Eastrail 177 film trilogy.
He is a mentally ill man who suffers from Dissociative Identity Disorder (DID), and has 24 separate personalities residing in his mind. Kevin and the majority of his personalities are by no means evil, but the two most dominant personalities — Dennis, an obsessive, cold, tough man, and Patricia, a manipulative woman — are both aggressive and vicious in their own way. Dennis and Patricia are also devout believers in The Beast, the 24th personality who is a fierce, cannibalistic monster that will avenge them against the "Impure".
He was portrayed by James McAvoy, who also played God Emperor Leto Atreides in the Dune miniseries, Wesley Gibson in Wanted, Bruce Robertson in Filth, and David Percival in Atomic Blonde, and Paddy in the American remake of Speak No Evil.
Biography
Past
When Kevin was a child, his father, Clarence Wendell Crumb, died in the same train crash (orchestrated by the villain Elijah Price, also known as "Mr. Glass") that left David Dunn, the protagonist of Unbreakable, as the sole surviving passenger. This left 3-year-old Kevin at the mercy of his abusive mother, who would severely punish him if he did not keep everything clean and in order. Kevin developed multiple personalities as a defense mechanism. Dennis, the protector alter with obsessive-compulsive cleaning habits, was a direct result of his trauma.
Kevin ultimately developed 23 individual personalities, each of which are able to take control of his mind and body.
Kevin, presumably as Barry, works at the Philadelphia Zoo when something jarring happens: two girls play a cruel and childish prank on him, taking his hands and forcing him to touch their breasts, before they run away laughing. This leaves Kevin disoriented and in shambles, and possibly contributes to Dennis's peculiar sexual appetite. The alters didn't realize it but this incident also had two unintended consequences: It caused the suppressed personalities, Dennis and Patricia to reemerge, being dub The Horde by the others. But this also lead to the development of a secret 24th personality based on the animals at the zoo, The Beast.
As of September 18, 2014, the personalities seemed to have buried Kevin away deep in his mind. Barry (an effeminate male fashion designer) used to be the predominant personality of the system, and he would assigned which of the personalities could gain control. Until the incident at work happened, this caused the suppressed personalities to reemerge and challenge Barry's control. During the internal conflict, Dennis and Patricia discovered that Hedwig had the unique ability to take the light whenever he wanted or give the light to anyone he chose. The two would manipulate Hedwig into suppressing the other alters until only the 3 of them had control over Kevin's body. With no one to stand in their way, The Horde enacted their plans to prepare for the emergence of The Beast.
Split
Dennis and Patricia
At the beginning of the film, Dennis (a stern man who suffers from OCD) kidnaps Casey, Claire and Marcia, knocking out Claire's father in order to abduct the three girls. He keeps them in a room in his home where he planned to have them dance naked for him. Dennis chooses Marcia first and grabs her, but Casey advises Marcia to urinate on herself in defense. Marcia obliges and Dennis returns her to the others before leaving in a fit of disgust. Dennis is later reprimanded for his behavior by a lady. The girls notice the lady through the keyhole and call for her help. This introduces the three girls to Patricia (a matronly Englishwoman), another one of Kevin's alters. This bewilders and invokes fear within the girls. Patricia reassures them Dennis won't try to touch them inappropriately going forward, but she still refuses to let the girls leave. Dennis returns with cleaning supplies for the girls to clean up their room and apologizes for his earlier behavior. He also hints as to why he kidnaped the girls when he calls them "sacred food."
When Hedwig (a 9-year-old boy with a lisp) "takes the light" (control of Kevin's body), Casey tries to befriend Hedwig in the hopes of escaping. She initially sows doubts in Hedwig that Patricia and Dennis are manipulating him, which causes him to leave the room. This buys the girls time to attempt escape. Claire tries to escape the room through a vent in the drywall ceiling, but Dennis finds her and tells her it is not nice to trick children because it shows who someone really is. Dennis then locks Claire in a separate room on her own and covers up the vent.
Meanwhile, when The Horde is asleep, the repressed personalities (Barry, Jade, Orwell, Samuel, or Heinrich) secretly schedule emergency meetings with their therapist, Dr. Fletcher, in an attempt to call for help. To not raise suspicion, Dennis impersonates Barry during the meetings but his OCD peeks through his Facade. Dr. Fletcher grows worried that The Horde may have seized control and begins investigating. Dr. Fletcher confronts "Barry" during one of their sessions and explains her theories about The Horde. Dr. Fletcher attempts to build trust and validates Dennis' existence. Dennis drops his facade and confirms her theories that The Horde's ultimate goal is to protect Kevin, and that The Beast is their means of security.
Soon after, when Patricia prepares food for Casey and Marcia, she forbids them from having Claire join them. When Marcia attacks Patricia and tries to make a run for it, Patricia finds her and threatens her with a knife. Like Claire, Marcia is put into a separate dingy room next to Claire's room.
Hedwig reemerges and Casey befriends him. Hedwig excitedly warns her about 'the Beast', a malevolent 24th personality with incredible abilities. He also reveals to Casey that there is a window in his room, which she perceives as a potential escape route. However, when he shows her the 'window', it is shown to be a hand-drawn picture of a window. Hedwig begins worrying that Casey is trying to escape but Casey convinces him to continue the tour of his room. In an attempt to impress her, Hedwig reveals he stole a functional walkie-talkie from Dennis. Casey grabs it and radios for help, but the person on the other end thinks that it is a prank and dismisses her; Patricia then subdues Casey. Dennis meets with Casey and informs her that she will be a human sacrifice to feed the Beast when he arrives.
Barry then sends several emails to Dr. Fletcher begging for her help to stop the Horde. Dr. Fletcher arrives at the zoo and tries to reason with Dennis. Her plan works and Dennis trusts her. Dennis opens up about his origin and elaborates on the Horde's plan. He confirms The Beast's existence and describes his superhuman abilities. The Beast will cleanse the world of the "Impure" and through The Beast, the world will finally pay attention to their existence. Dr. Fletcher pretends to agree, but when she realizes that The Horde has kidnapped the girls, she tries to convince Dennis that what he is doing is wrong. Dennis sprays her with chloroform and carries her into the living room. Dennis then leaves for the subway station. Enacting a sort of ritual, Dennis then buys flowers and Patricia visits a train car (presumably the same train Kevin's father left him at.) Dennis then becomes 'the Beast', exhibiting physical changes such as increased muscle mass and several inches added to his already tall height. The Beast snarls, his persona dissolving into an animalistic mentality before launching himself on a rampage. Running through neighborhoods, the Beast returns to the zoo to feed on the girls. When she recovers, Dr. Fletcher writes down Kevin's full name, knowing that the resulting awakening of his original personality will be enough to subdue him. The girls, in the meantime, try to escape from their confinement. Casey uses a loose nail to lockpick the door into Kevin's office and finds a computer with diary entries from Kevin's alters. Casey uses Barry's dairy entry to find a nearby set of keys to free herself, while Claire encourages Marcia to use a hanger to unlock her door.

Returning to his hideout, “The Beast” confronts Dr. Fletcher. Before she is able to speak Kevin's full name, a tactic which would call Kevin to the light and throw The Horde into chaos, he crushes her to death against him. He then proceeds to rip apart and eat both Marcia and Claire. Meanwhile, Casey stumbles upon Dr. Fletcher's corpse, as well as an instructional note the doctor left behind on how to defeat the Beast. When the Beast closes in on her, demonstrating the ability to climb up walls, Casey uses Kevin's real name to call him to the light. The Beast is briefly tamed, and the actual Kevin (who has been restrained for years by the other personalities, and has no memory of what he has done between then and now) emerges. Horrified by the death of Dr. Fletcher, he orders Casey to kill him with a shotgun he bought before the Beast can return—however, Kevin's other personalities desperately try to defend themselves until The Horde regains control. Casey attempts to reuse Kevin's full name, but it has no effect, allowing the Beast to return. As the Beast reawakens, it pursues Casey into the basement of its lair, eventually cornering her in a cell. Casey shoots him twice at point blank range with Kevin's shotgun, but it proves to be ineffective, as the shells fail to do more than pierce his skin.
Reaching the cell, the Beast voices his maniacal plans to rid the world of the 'untouched' (As in, the people who he feels have never suffered pain or discomfort, unlike him). The Beast bends the bars with its bare hands to gain entry, but before finishing, it notices the scars on her body from her previous abuse at the hands of her uncle. Realizing that he has met a kindred spirit, one who has also suffered exceptional abuse at the hands of a trusted relative, he declares her to be "pure," and leaves a bewildered Casey in peace. Casey is eventually discovered and rescued by Kevin's co-workers at the Philadelphia Zoo. Recovering from the chase, Patricia, Dennis and Hedwig speculate in awe at the power of the Beast, marveling at what it was shown to be capable of doing. They note that the shotgun pellets did not puncture the Beast's skin. Patricia voices their plans to change the world, and await for the Beast's next feeding.
At the end of the film, in a diner, people are watching a news article about the murders at the zoo. The news details Kevin's condition and refers to the man by his newest and diabolical collective nom de guerre "The Horde". One of the waitresses talks about the similarity with a case 15 years ago where a man in a wheelchair was arrested and had a nickname too which she cannot recall. A man named David Dunn sitting next to her tells her his name was Mr. Glass.
Aftermath
Although most of the personalities remained neutral during the conflict between Barry's group and the Horde, The Beast's emergence changed everything. Every alter chose a side and some even changed sides until all the personalities were divided into the two groups. Still in control of Kevin's body, The Horde followed The Beast's plans to cleanse the world of the "impure" and continued their serial killings to prove their existence. Led by Patricia, the Horde would sacrifice a second group of girls to the Beast sometime before the events of Glass. Meanwhile, Barry's group attempted to help Kevin retake control of his body in the hopes of stopping the Horde for good.
Glass
Imprisonment
The Horde returns in Glass, taking a group of cheerleaders hostage (presumably with the intent to kill them the same way he did with Casey, Claire, and Marcia), while a superhero called the Overseer (later revealed to be David) is searching for The Horde. David patrols the streets until he bumps into Hedwig and sees a vision of Hedwig talking to the kidnaped cheerleaders. Hedwig summons the Beast and he returns to the abandoned factory to feed. David frees the cheerleaders, and battles The Beast; throughout the fight, the Beast's animal instincts and superhuman strength prove matched by David's invulnerability. The two fall through a window and standoff outside the building. However, before the fight can continue, both David and Kevin are interrupted by the authorities. Using a strobe light, the Clover Organization forces the Beast to switch back to Barry, and Dr. Staple convinces David to surrender. The two are arrested and sent to Raven Hill Memorial Psychiatric Hospital, the insane asylum where Elijah Price is also being held.
The three are being held by Dr. Ellie Staple, who tries to persuade them that there is no such thing as superhuman powers and that they actually have a mental illness. To ensure Kevin's compliance, Staple has built an array of flashing lights that activate with Kevin's closeness, which forces the personalities to switch at random. Through several meetings, Staple sows doubts in The Horde that the Beast doesn't possess superhuman powers and is simply another alter. Staple's words affect the alters and the Horde loses hope in the Beast, up until Elijah requests a personal meeting with the Beast.
The Bad Guys team-up
Eventually, it turns out that Staple is part of an anti-superhuman society that is willing to refute any evidence regarding to supers and that she plans to kill Elijah, David and Kevin to accomplish it. Aware of Staple's true intentions, Elijah forms an alliance with The Horde. Elijah informs The Horde of his plan to have The Beast battle the Overseer at the grand opening of the Osaka Tower, the tallest building in the city. He claims the battle will prove to the world that superhumans exist. Seizing the opportunity at escape, the Horde agrees. The next morning, Elijah escapes his cell and disables the flashing lights in The Horde's cell. After getting his outfit out of the evidence locker and watching Kevin as the Beast kill an orderly, Mr. Glass informs him that one of the Horde is going to have to get them out. Patricia is elected and poses as an orderly to escort Elijah through the underground tunnels. When confronted by some guards, Patricia orders Mr. Glass to move his wheelchair forward. Elijah does and Kevin assumes his Beast identity to kill the guards.
Making their way outside, Dennis confronts two volunteers and locks the two women in a van to protect them from The Horde. Dennis confronts Mr. Glass about the killings and refuses to follow the plan, but Dennis is subdued by the Horde. As more police arrive, Patricia summons the Beast and it kills them all. David arrives dressed as the Overseer and confronts The Beast. The Beast battles David but the two are fairly matched until they are interrupted by riot police. The Beast kills the officers and prepares to confront David. Mr. Glass reveals David's weakness is water and advises The Beast to use a nearby water tank.
David's son, Joseph stands in the middle of the two superhumans and reveals Elijah's secret. Joseph reveals Kevin's father took the same train as David (Eastrail 177) and that Mr. Glass is the one responsible for the train crash that killed Kevin's father's. Mr. Glass justifies his actions and claims that the Horde owes its existence to him (since without Clarence's death, Kevin's mother wouldn't have abused him and The Beast wouldn't have been born). The Beast thanks Mr. Glass for their creation, but states Elijah can't be trusted with keeping Kevin safe. The angry Beast mortally wounds Elijah by crushing his ribs.
The Beast resumes its battle with the Overseer and throws David into the water tank. As the Beast strangles David underwater, David breaks the walls of the tank and the two slide out. The Beast then challenges David to meet him at the Osaka Tower and battle in front of the world.
Legacy
Casey Cooke (one of his former hostages) stops The Beast from leaving and pulls Kevin back into the light. This allowed Staple's men to gun him down by shooting Kevin in the abdomen. As he dies, multiple personalities come into the light, each with their own thoughts and fear of dying. Ultimately, Kevin takes command of the light and assures Casey he'll hold on until the very end. Despite Kevin's death, The Beast's actions were enough to let Elijah record the event with the security cameras before he died.
Elijah's mother, Joseph and Casey would later expose the footage to the public in revenge for the deaths of Elijah, David and Kevin, thus exposing the existence of those with superhuman abilities and ruining Staple’s plan. Moreover, Kevin's death at the hands of Dr. Staple also avenges the death's of Claire and Marcia, Dr. Fletcher, as well as Elijah Price himself and presumably the previous "impure" victims Kevin assumedly killed. Thus, ending his reign of terror on the "impure" for good despite Dr. Staple successfully killing him alongside David Dunn.
Personality
“ | He's done awful things to people, and he'll do awful things to you. | „ |
~ Hedwig describes the Beast. |
Kevin is an extremely impenetrable and complex individual: The mental disorder that he prominently suffers from causes him to have a myriad of personalities, though only a few of them are shown in the film:
- Kevin himself: A terrified young man who, from what can be seen at the end of the film, has a conscience and is horrified and guilt-ridden at what his other identities have done. He is so horrified by what he has done that after realizing the destruction he has caused and the trauma he inflicted on Casey, he encourages her to kill him, and the only thing that prevents this from happening is the frantic interference of the other personalities that exist in his head. He spends the majority of the film restrained by these personalities. At the end of his death in Glass, he manages to take control of the light, afraid of dying yet content that he is finally in control of himself in his final hours, indicating Kevin has always been the strongest personality, but has chosen to willingly retreat into his own subconscious since he didn’t want to be the one in control.
- Hedwig: A nine-year-old boy with several compulsive behaviors, such as proclaiming that he has red socks, crawling on bent knees, and ending sentences with 'et cetera'. He loves to dance and draw, and he is disciplined by the other personalities. He befriends Casey, and even develops childishly romantic feelings for her. He appears to have the unique ability of taking the light when he pleases. This is likely due to Hedwig being the only child personality, and children are known to be more open minded than adults are. Hedwig is innocent and naive, easily baited by Casey at one point and cowed by some of the other personalities, very few of whom truly respect him (not even Barry, who simply calls him "the boy"). He is awed by the power of the Beast, and is subservient to the other personalities, especially Patricia (whom he calls "Miss Patricia"). Apparently, he is not as partial to their schemes as he wants to be, stating that "they don't tell me things", and that they make fun of him. When the Horde is destabilized after Casey uses Kevin's full name, Hedwig willingly surrenders the light to Patricia, with this is one of the many hints that Hedwig holds special subservience for Patricia. He is last seen during Kevin's death as the first alter to appear, he pleads with Casey to stop the pain before he loses control over the light.
- Barry: The original dominant personality in Kevin's head, being calm, tranquil, and level-headed to some extent and working to control the other personalities. Barry is the personality that is used to communicate with Dr. Fletcher, but he is exploited by Dennis in the latter's bid for control over Kevin's head. He is a charismatic, persuasive, and somewhat effeminate male with an incredible talent for fashion and design. It is implied that he is a very commanding and authoritative individual (described at one point as an extroverted leader). When Barry steals the light for real and tries to talk to Casey he shows genuine concern for her well being, assuring her that the group of personalities in Kevin's head are going to "work through this". It is hinted that he believes (quite justifiably) that Dennis and Patricia are very unstable. Barry is last seen briefly in Glass when the Clover Organization uses flashing lights to force the Beast to switch personalities. Barry pleads for the police not to shoot them and Barry pleads for them to keep Kevin in the light before being institutionalized alongside David.
- Dennis: One of the more disturbing personalities, Dennis is cold, temperamental, and manipulative, with a perverted liking for watching young girls dance naked. Dennis was the strongest personality before the Beast came along; often acting as the muscle of The Horde. When he captures the three girls, he tries to get them to dance for him. The only way this is thwarted is when one of them urinates on him, to which he reacts with inarticulate fury. He demonstrates traits of obsessive-compulsive disorder and a firm, sometimes violent, tendency towards cleanliness and order (which is possibly duplicated from Kevin's abusive mother). He admits to Dr. Fletcher that he thinks Kevin himself to be weak, and that the other personalities don't respect him, much to Dennis' dismay. Dennis acknowledges that the Horde isn't perfect but doesn't believe they deserve ridicule. He shows himself capable of talking on pleasant terms with Dr. Fletcher despite his reputation, but he has an explosive temper. He explains that his altar came about because of the malevolent ways Kevin's mother punished him, and that the only way to sate her was through keeping everything tidy and in order. Dennis is devious and exploitative, being shown to have been masquerading as Barry since the very beginning of the film. However, Dennis' efforts to conceal himself aren't perfect, since he overextends himself in trying to convince Dr. Fletcher that he is Barry and is unable to ultimately conceal his OCD. By the events of Glass, Dennis grows disgusted with The Horde's bloodlust and makes attempts to redeem himself. He becomes outgoing with Casey and answers Dr. Stapple's questions honestly. He saves two volunteer workers by locking them in a van to keep them safe from The Horde. He is last seen during Kevin's death as the second alter to appear, admitting his regrets for allowing Patricia to manipulate him and begging Casey to clean the blood off his pants.
- Patricia: A sophisticated, obsequious, orderly, and polite "woman" who has considerable command over some of the other personalities (This personality claims that the others 'listen' to her). Patricia is very disciplined and intellectual towards the other personalities, and towards other people, and is also very calm, as he assures Casey, Claire and Marcia that Dennis will not touch them because they are to serve a greater purpose than Dennis's desires. She has considerable manners, making sandwiches for the girls and being generally pleasant to them, even exchanging "fun facts" about animals while doing so. Patricia is revealed to be surprisingly destructive and dangerous in her own right, as evidenced by her calm (but extremely threatening) way of dealing with Marcia by soothing her verbally whilst holding a knife to her stomach. Patricia is a perfectionist, reacting angrily when she cuts a sandwich in awkward halves before doing so again. Patricia, despite being an authority unto herself, worships the Beast the most out of the other personalities: stated to be one of the "undesirable identities" because of her fervent belief in the Beast's existence, and later on she waxes lyrical about the greatness of the Beast and being the personality who finally gives the light to the twenty-forth identity. Later on, she marvels about what the Beast accomplished, and declared that they let The Beast show how powerful the Horde could be. Her presence in the movie Glass is much more limited, but she is shown a few times throughout the film, doubting The Beast's abilities after being told the circumstances of The Beast's previous feats by Dr. Staple while conversing with Elijah Price. She is last again when Kevin is dying as the fifth alter to appear, trying to convince Casey and herself that she never doubted The Beast, and asks Casey to make that clear to the other personalities.
- The Beast: By far the most dangerous, hostile and terrifying of all the personalities, the Beast is the 24th identity that resides in Kevin's mind. When the Beast first emerged, it didn’t fully take control, and appeared to share control with Dennis; acting as the physical presence, while Denis acted as the voice. And apparently when he was not in the light, the Beast resided in the train yard where Kevin's father died, and up until his arrival he was not seen by the other personalities. The Beast is a malevolent and rancorous figure, idolized by Dennis, Patricia and Hedwig, who all await his arrival. He is a megalomaniac, believing that those who are broken and who have suffered are superior to anybody else, but also that those who haven't are irrelevant, and that they are 'asleep'; this philosophy rules his actions entirely, since the Beast goes from savagery to glee at seeing that Casey has suffered seriously in her life and declares that her heart is 'pure'. This is also another reason why he spared Elijah and decided to work with him. The Beast is extremely destructive and violent to the point of savagery, having an unquenchable lust for human flesh, and an intense perspective that the rest of the world are impure because they have not suffered like he has. The Beast is viewed as an almost Godlike figure by the other 23 identities, and they are in awe of what he can accomplish. Despite his savagery and beliefs of the broken being pure, in the end, his main goal and desire is to protect Kevin. This is why he betrays and kills Elijah when he discovers he was responsible for the death of Kevin's father and doesn't trust him to protect Kevin, although he does thank Elijah for bringing him into existence.
- Jade: She appeared on a video log and briefly appeared after Casey called Kevin "into the light". Jade seems to act like a typical teenage girl with a foul mouth. She apparently has diabetes and needs to take insulin shots for it. She seems to be the only one that believes that the Alters are different people rather than personalities. Considering in her video log, she frustratingly makes mention that she's the only one who has to take the insulin shots while the others are perfectly healthy physically. During sometime between Split and Glass, she's joined The Horde after seeing The Beast's incredible powers. She briefly reappears in Glass while in custody. She flits with Daryl to distract him before charging and attempting to steal his keycard.
- Orwell: He appears briefly when Casey calls Kevin "into the light". Orwell is a highly intelligent and introverted historian whose verbosity tends to overshadow his intended meaning. He can't help but compare his and the Alter's predicaments to a certain point of history, as seen when he tries to desperately explain to Casey that The Horde doesn't represent the rest of them. He is shown to have been concerned about the Horde's advances for some time before the incident.
- Mr. Pritchard: He appears briefly while in custody. He is a Professor of Cinema, specifically Japanese cinema ranging between the 1950s-80s. He expresses fervent frustration at being imprisoned, despite being in favor of Kevin being in the light. He has a wide vocabulary, but is not nearly as verbose or extraneous as Orwell.
- Luke: He appears while in custody. He is a Southern man who likes to spoil movie plots.
- Norma: She appears while in custody. She is a Southern woman.
- Ian and Mary Reynolds: They appear in custody where they chastise Daryl for letting his guard down around Jade, almost leading to the Horde's escape. They are (literal) Irish twins.
- Jalin: He is an hyperactive, stereotypical surfer, claiming to Daryl that they almost got him, and laughed at the way the Horde was being contained.
- Ansel: He briefly appears, nervously mentioning that Barry was trying to get Kevin to the light, and asked if he was close enough.
- Heinrich: He is an autistic man. When Kevin was being imprisoned, Heinrich was in the light, and protested when the guards told him to keep moving and shoved him. Hedwig would take control, claiming to the guards "he doesn't like to be touched".
- Felida: She is a Spanish woman. She pleads with Dr. Staple, saying that her heart hurts due to the Horde's actions, and that it wasn't right to hurt others.
- B.T.: He briefly appears, angrily stating that the Beast was the only one who could protect them.
- Goddard: He briefly appears, telling Mr. Glass that the world is a lost cause, and that the Beast was the only good and meaningful thing left in it.
- Samuel: He briefly appears as Kevin dies as the third personality, narrating to Casey that Kevin was scared, but also greatly relieved.
- Polly: She briefly appears as Kevin dies as the forth personality. She prepares to surrender the light to Patricia before frantically trying to convince the other personalities that they should all listen to Patricia.
Kevin's computer also listed three other personalities that were never shown before Kevin's death:
- Bernice
- Rakel
- Kat
Powers and Abilities
As Kevin Wendell Crumb, he is just an ordinary person with no unique abilities. The same applies to most of the other personalities, though some of them have aptitudes in certain occupational fields, as any person would. However, when The Beast takes the light, he gains frightening animal-like abilities and is presumably one of the most powerful individuals in their universe, with David Dunn being the only one who rivals him. Just as Kevin's psychiatric condition causes him to create personalities based on individuals he has observed, when under the control of The Beast, he will imitate the characteristics of the animals at the zoo where he worked, not only their temperaments but physical abilities as well. Thus, he can gain the strength of a gorilla, the speed of a cheetah, the climbing ability of a monkey, the thick hide of a rhinocerous, and so on.
- Super Strength: As 'The Beast', one of his defining traits is his unbelievable strength. He is strong enough to bend steel bars with effort, effortlessly throw people around like rag dolls, throw a large table, flip a police car on its side, defeat four riot guards simultaneously, and break the backs of any human by squeezing them, with the exception of David Dunn.
- Invulnerability: The Beast possesses unbelievable resistance to all forms of damage and conventional weaponry that would normally be fatal to regular humans, resembling a rhino's tough skin. His skin and muscles have amazing resistance against any form of weaponry, and he also seems to be resistant against diseases and illnesses as well. He is able to withstand close-range shotgun bullets and still walk with no visible pain, although his healing is limited and he retained scars from the bullet wounds. When Dr. Fletcher tried to stab The Beast with a knife, the knife broke against his skin. The only time in which he momentarily feels pain and falls to the ground is when fighting against David Dunn, although David fell to the ground at the same time. However, when his other personalities take over, this invulnerability disappears, and he's susceptible to regular fatal injuries, as he was killed by a bullet.
- Wall-Crawling: Similar to a spider, The Beast has the ability to crawl on walls and ceilings using his incredible strength, even managing to remain inverted on the wall. His strength allows him to create a locking connection with any surfaces that supports the full weight of his body.
- Enhanced Speed: As 'The Beast', he has shown to run faster than regular humans. He even runs on all fours like an animal to go faster.
Weaknesses
- Trauma Triggers: The Horde is susceptible to trauma triggers which can force a specific personality to take the light. The most apparent trigger is Kevin's full name 'Kevin Wendell Crumb', which causes Kevin to forcefully emerge through reliving past traumas (caused by his mother who would say Kevin's full name when she would punish him). This momentarily stuns the Horde and can cause rapid switching as the different personalities fight for control. However, the personalities can momentarily suppresses the associated personality to become immune to the trigger.
- Flashing Lights: The Horde, even the Beast, are susceptible to flashing lights. When exposed, the flashing lights force the personalities to switch at random.

Trivia
- Kevin's background and the will of his personalities to become a superior being by creating another monstrous and superhuman personality through sacrificial ritual makes him quite similar to Francis Dolarhyde.
- Considering that Split exists in the exact same world as M. Night Shyamalan's Unbreakable (which is essentially an origin story for a superhero), Split can be considered to be Kevin's origin story as a supervillain. This is lamented by Price near the end of Glass.
- Each of the three protagonists of the Unbreakable trilogy (David Dunn, Elijah Price, and Kevin W. Crumb) have their own distinctive colors: David's color is green, Elijah's color is purple and Kevin's color is yellow. However, Kevin is a antagonist in Split, though he is briefly an antagonist and protagonist in Glass.
- There is a fan theory that the train that Kevin's father left on to and never returned was the same train that David Dunn was on and the one that crashed in Unbreakable. In Glass, this theory is revealed to be true.
- Kevin was initially planned to appear as the secondary antagonist of Unbreakable in early drafts of the script; however, as Shyamalan didn't want the film to feel crowded, he instead replaced him with the Orange Man, saving Kevin for Split, a film that revolves around him primarily.
- Kevin sparing Casey Cooke after realizing that she is “pure” due to having previously suffered abuse from her uncle would later have a similar impact in The Menu, where Margot Mills, also portrayed by Anya Taylor Joy, would have her life spared by Chef Julian Slowik when she orders a real cheeseburger, which allowed the chef to set her free due to having been different from the other rich people who represented his abusements in the past.
- One of Kevin’s personalities is named Mary Reynolds. This could be a reference to the real Mary Reynolds, who was supposedly the first recorded case of Dissociative Identity Disorder (which is Kevin’s disorder) back in 1811.
