George Washington, later known as The Liberty Lurker and The Horned Serpent is the main antagonist of THE MONUMENT MYTHOS franchise.
It is a massive serpentine creature living underneath the crust of one of many parallel Earths. It is shown that the Maize facilities are built atop this beast and attempt to control it with the help of the Department of Defense to stop the ADA's plan of "Unification". This fails miserably, causing the largest and irreversible reversion of technology in human history.
Appearance[]
The Liberty Lurker[]
Although we only get a glimpse of the creature, we do see it's head, and based on descriptions by Virginia Arnoldson of victims of climbing the Trees within Wonderland, it's body is charred black and elongated drastically, barely retaining a humanoid shape.
The Horned Serpent[]
The Horned Serpent is, indeed, a serpent, with scales that protrude from its body slightly, hence the name. We only see the serpent's head when it is emitting electricity, and we can assume little about its features, but its size is undeniable. It stretches from California to Pennsylvania while still curving, nearly five thousand miles in length. It's later revealed in the season finale, ALCATRAZAPOCALYPSE, that this schematic was wrong, the Serpent was larger than anticipated, with it's length being comparable to the entire Earth while curved.
Wonderland[]
The realms's realm name is "Horned Serpent Metastructure" It is called Wonderland for short. It a strange realm that exists on a higher plane of existence. It resembles a mass a glowing colorless and leafless that stretch infinitely. Anyone that stays in Wonderland for too long get infected with American Wonderland Syndrome (or AWS for short.)
True form
The Horned serpent's true form is an abstract that exists in a higher dimension. Only one aspect of the Horned Serpent can be viewed at a time which explains why The Horned Serpent and Wonderland can only be views at once when they are the same.
Biography[]
Human Life[]
George Washington's life was most likely the same as the one in our reality up until he cut down a tree. However, this tree was actually a Special Tree, and George was transported into the Wonderland upon it's activation. Inside the Wonderland, he experiences several flashes caused by the trees, making him jump up and down levels of the Metastructure. Washington attempted to escape by climbing one of the many trees located within it, causing him to become what Virginia Arnoldson describes as a "climber," disfiguring him entirely, giving him horns, charring his body and most importantly giving him the long serpentine look, as he becomes one with the serpent.[1]
A second (nicknamed the Delaware Double by townsfolk) and eventually a third George Washington emerged from the trees, replacing his place in the Deanverse timeline.[4]
Abattoir[]
At some point, Washington came back to the Deanverse through unknown means and was buried deep underground. Somehow, the US Government found out about the existence of the Horned Serpent and his former identity as their founding father, where they would deem that he posed a serious enough threat that required him to be put within a prison, or rather a slaughterhouse to keep him in line. This slaughterhouse was decided to be the pedestal of Lady Liberty[1], as well as certain key points at the crust under the Earth, as the Lurker is later shown to be one of the access points to the Serpent.[4]
The Suez Canal[]
For a reason unexplained, the Serpent commands architect Ferdinand de Lesseps to build the Suez Canal through telepathically talking to him and invading his dreams until he caved. He reveals this event in an interview about the Canal's creation after he decides to read the speech he would have used in order to lie about the true reason behind the canal.[1]
Before the Renovations[]
After the French worked on the Statue of Liberty for several years, President Ulysses S. Grant began asking the architects for varying sizes for the pedestal over the course of four years in order to contain the warped body of George Washington, and damn him to a fate within the pedestal. The ambassador for the U.S. urged the architects to listen to these requests. One of the architects would go on to comment on the oddities of the structure in an interview in 1889, as seen above.[2] Later leaks by the Liberty Liars of the full interview show that he knew of the true purpose for the pedestal.[1]
The Renovations and Ellis Island Sacrifices[]
The U.S. would go on to make "extensive renovations" to the pedestal in 1949, with such goals as "provide entrance for sustenance" and "install engine to assist with eventual departure", both of these goals referring to the accommodation of the Libertylurker. These accommodations are further detailed in the classified blueprint ST-LI 1.8084, showing that an entire system with an axle and wheels connected to this "engine" was created to move the entire statue, as well as a giant underground room labelled "waste storage".
Immigrants going to Ellis Island to become U.S. citizens described an awful rotting smell, especially in the summer of 1954, where the summer heat made the smell so pungent that it killed birds. Several immigrants were also seen being led to the Statue of Liberty's pedestal with government officials, only to not come back out. These people are the ones that did not pass the rigid immigrant tests the U.S. had in place, and were fed to the Libertylurker. The immigration systems for Ellis Island closed a few months after in November.[2]
The Libertylurker's First Sighting and Aftermath[]
After thirty-one years of near normalcy after 1954, during a warm August day, the statue suddenly begins to open up using the axle and wheel systems, only to unveil the creature nesting inside of the monument. This was called the first sighting of the Libertylurker, and it is implied there is/was more. Local authorities later investigated the pedestal of the statue, only to find that the "waste storage" labelled in the classified blueprint was in fact, a mass grave for the immigrants fed to the Libertylurker, which turned out to be the head of the Serpent, between 1949 and 1954.
Surveyors colloquially called cthonauts ("underworld sailors") would later survey the area beneath the pedestal and would find a gateway to The Horned Serpent Metastructure. They had captured the full area within a video before a flash occurs and it immediately ends, recording the infinite stacks of repeating Trees within the Metastructure.[1]
The blueprint becomes declassified after this event, and the government promises compensation for the victims' families and Lady Liberty is removed from it's pedestal and not replaced, assumedly too damaged by the Libertylurker.[2]
The Statue of Progress[]
At the same time as the Liberty Lurker being released in 1985, a section of the Serpent comes out from the pedestal of the Statue of Progress after the construction of the Suez Canal.[1]
Project Horned Serpent[]

Maize decides to collaborate with the Department of Defense in 1972 to "... initiate the first system to control the True Forces of Mass Destruction (TFMDs).". The project to create and enact this system would be called "Project Horned Serpent", and the plan was, presumably, to attempt and control the serpent for either their own purposes, or for the protection of the U.S. The serpent has electrical capability that the company utilized via enslaving the serpent, while also allowing Maize to be close to the other monuments. This project would be in action for eight years, before Maize is attacked in an unspecified location, most likely in the Pennsylvania manufacturing plant, as that is where the head of the serpent is. This attack was a consequence of the ADA's attempt at Unification in 1980, where they tried to awaken the Serpent in order to fracture the borders of the United States in their own image and freeing it from its burial. In the picture we get to see, electrical arcs flying throughout the air, with several spikes seemingly coming out the buildings. It's later confirmed that these spikes are Special Trees.[4]
Aftermath[]
Maize begins mass recalling all personal computer devices after the events of 1980, describing the issues as outbreaks being reported. It is unclear what these outbreaks are, but it is caused by some relation between the serpent and all personal computers. After ten years of recall and destruction of personal computers, the last one is destroyed in a public display in 1990, with Maize calling it a "New Beginning". Maize then places heavy restrictions on the level of technology that can be used, especially for communication, and in 2000 released a device called a "Maize Movie Maker", essentially being equivalent to early 2000s computer editing devices, and statically staying that way thereafter, highly similar in functionality to Windows Movie Maker.
They apologize for these past mistakes and explain this history through an advertisement for the Movie Maker. They later would also limit what mobile devices you could have for communication, limiting social media to seemingly a singular main forum site, via devices called T-Machines, with similar user interfaces to brick phones. These T-Machines would allow you to use the site "TWTTR", an archaic Twitter-esque site where you can make forum posts and comment what you want about posts, with like and reshare features.[4] These devices are regularly used in 2021.[6]
Unification of 2003[]
On August 17, 2003, the Air Force One was used as a vessel by the Air Force One Angel to spread what became known as the "Infection" through packages throughout three specific monuments: The Statue of Liberty, Mount Rushmore and Alcatraz Island.[7] While what the nature of this Infection is subject to debate, due to the packages being delivered at points where the Horned Serpent was known to be underneath, it's heavily implied they have something to do with it.
This event caused the United States to "unificate" into three separate zones, named after the places where the packages had landed, and rename themselves to the "United Zones of America" (UZA).[5] Most notably, the package that dropped in the Statue of Liberty didn't cause the zone to be renamed to "Liberty Zone," but to the "Washington Zone," foreshadowing Washington's identity.
Maya and Nathaniel Arnoldson's Expedition[]
While trekking down a Maize plant in Pennsylvania, Maya and Nathaniel Arnoldson find a cave below the plant using a blueprint given to them by the ADA, in which they are a part of. In the cave, the Serpent's presence made everything in the cave die, due to it's electrical abilities. Maya and Nathaniel would encounter the head of the Serpent.[4]
Suez Canal Crab[]
While Americans were storming the Cairo Exclusion Zone and things had gone ary, the Serpent telepathically spoke to the survivors, telling them to worship the Suez Canal Crab. It's implied that due to the Statue of Progress, a notorious slaughterhouse for the Horned Serpent, being located nearby the Suez Canal, the Serpent is directly connected to the Crab.[6]
The Great Division[]
On February 22nd, 2022, the crust of the Earth is damaged by the confrontation between the Angel and Freedom, allowing the Serpent to escape and finish the job by completely destroying it. This also unleashes the Special Trees to expand across the universe and turns the world into the Corner World, where the survivors of the event become interdimensonal creatures known as the Cornerfolk. This event is known by the remaining sentient survivors, mostly Cthonauts and victims of the Special Trees, as The Great Division.[8]
The Serpent is presumably killed by GOD and he creates a helmet out of its skull for The D-Day Knight.
The Montyverse's Serpent[]
In a splinter timeline created after The Great Division is reverted by the Angel, who is revealed to have won the battle with Freedom, the Serpent is never freed from the Earth. This is because, after a discussion with Cthonaut A, the Angel decides to divide itself into nothing but particles, as these particles will then trickle throughout the fabric of time, allowing it to alter the past. The Angel uses this to alter the neurons of its past self, making the past Angel instead allow itself to be defeated at the hands of Freedom, thus preventing the Serpent from being freed.
Modern Day[]
When a alternate version of Virgina (which is created by Alxatraz) was running away form the orphanage, she came into contact with the Horned Serpent/Wonderland which infected her with AWS, turning her in the monster she currently is.

Multiversally[]
The Great Division has caused the Deanverse to turn into the Cornerworld, an interdimensional gateway for what was once its inhabitants, who have in turn turned into the Cornerfolk. The Cornerfolk have been described as a "Transdimensional Species" who can travel through multiple planes of existence and the multiverse through corners, implying that their presence is something that can be witnessed in most if not every universe.[9]
In the "Cornerverse"[]
Once, the Cornerfolk had become the subject of study of a man nicknamed "Alex's Inspiration," who discovered the secrets of the Cornerworld and had become obsessed with them to the point of attempting to enter their homeworld, becoming even more insane and subtly disfigured in the process.
Alex Kansas, a survivor of the Great Division, would make a film based on these events protagonized by "Riley Tillon,"[9] prompting Alex's Inspiraton to take over the channel in the form of a threat to Alex, showing how he seemingly sacrificed a girl to the Cornerworld.[10]
In the "Houseverse"[]
The Horned Serpent is indirectly mentioned by The Crescent King during the ending of the series, where he asks to the audience if they really thought they would only witness an end of the world scenario once, referencing the events of the Great Division and the viewer's familiarity with it.[11]
In the Nixonverse[]
In the Nixonverse, a reality formed after GOD's interference with an alternate universe akin to ours, GOD briefly explains the events of the Great Division to Ed Dwight, as well as telling him that one of his extensions, The Last Son of Alcatraz, was fated to become "one of the most dangerous leaders in the universe" after he becomes the King of the Lunarians.[12]
Many years later, after breaking free from Lunarian control and realizing the weight of his actions, the Last Son of Alcatraz would become so maddened that he would begin to transform into a version of the Horned Serpent, as was foretold by GOD. GOD would quickly take action on the matter, fearing that if he let the Last Son complete his transformation he would be dooming the Nixonverse to suffer the same fate as the Deanverse. The Last Son, alongside everyone else in the Nixonverse was rendered fictional and thus erased from history as a last countermeasure by GOD.[13]

- In their timeline, Liberty had major changes done on it in 1949, while in our world, we have only had two major renovations of the Statue of Liberty, once in 1936, and once in 1986, for its fiftieth birthday and centennial respectively, and this was only for cosmetic restoration.
- For unknown reasons, there is a drain above the engine in the blueprint, possibly for the blood.
- Eleonora Bramante was immigrating from Milan, Italy.
- The positions and number of Maize factories, as well as the illustration for Project Horned Serpent, are inspired by Benjamin Franklin's political cartoon "Join, or Die.".
- George Washington cutting a Special Tree is a reference to the American folk tale about the six year old Washington chopping down his father's cherry tree.
