You thought it'd only end once? Your brain is suspended in fluid. You are the only House in the Ocean.
~ The Crescent King explaining the true nature of the Houses.
Laura Bush's body here was recreated with a computer program. The same way your mind recreates reality. Your mind takes your observations and decides whether they're real or not. Do you really know the difference? Everything you know comes from the same meat behind your eyes. If someone were to take over, you would never know; You'd think you were yourself all along. As Bill Clinton once said, there is no House in the Ocean. There is only the House in your Head.
~ The Crescent King explaining the true nature of your brain.

The Houses in the Ocean are the titular secondary antagonists of the analog horror web series THE HOUSE IN THE OCEAN, as well as minor antagonists in the analog superhorror web series THE NIXONVERSE: A MONUMENT MYTHOS STORY, the second installment in THE MONUMENT MYTHOS franchise and its expansion, THE ABSOLUTE NIXONVERSE.

As their name implies they are a group of houses that have been appearing in oceans all around the globe for seemingly no reason as early as the early 30s, thus being described as "Mirages" by local authorities. Several countermeasures against the Houses have been attempted, ranging from the foundation of a "House Club" dedicated to shooting the Houses, and a barricade made out of specialized "killer wood chips" to avoid the public from coming into contact with them after the realization of the Houses being able to deflect the damage being done to them. Eventually, whoever lives inside the Houses would render all countermeasures obsolete, as he would "restore" the video warnings of several government officials into gaslighting the public into shooting the Houses and eventually sending the wood chips back every three years.

It is later revealed that the Houses are nothing but a physical manifestation of the brain and psyche of the beholder, explaining how they're able to deflect the damage inflicted upon them and how they can appear as mirages, as well as making terrifying implications about who truly lives in there.

Behavior[]

The Houses are mysterious entities, taking on the form of houses on the ocean, generally roaming near the shores. The Houses' sizes are inconsistent: some footages imply they are gigantic (such as the introductory one), although other pictures imply they are of normal size. It is likely that the Houses can shapeshift to some extent.

The Houses are mostly passive and cowardly, as they will generally flee people approaching them. On occasions, they might stay still and even allow people to enter inside, generally with the prospect to kill them, as evidenced by the Bushes' ambush. The Houses will manipulate the air pressure inside to instantly kill their targets. The houses can also harm their attackers by deflecting their attacks, which caused Ronald Reagan to be disfigured, and even ram into boats and other objects. It is heavily implied one of The Houses was behind a huge explosion near Gainesville, which sent the area into panic as debris rained over the town. How The Houses propel themselves is not explained.

The houses may cause a memetic effect, compelling people to go over them, as implied by Obama. This effect may be explained by the Houses' true nature: semi-physical entities tied to the brains of their observers (hence why they embody mankind). This may explain their inconsistencies in shape and behavior, and also why they deflect attacks back. Due to those facts, it is difficult to tell if the Houses are actively malicious.

It is possible to project movies or other footages into a house's facade. The house will then send back an altered and creepier version of said footage, which will serve to implement the Crescent King's existence in the viewer's mind. More generally, the Houses' main purpose is to alter humanity's memories so that they can be manipulated by the nefarious King.

Biography[]

Initial Delirium[]

The Houses are entities living in the oceans and described as mirages, hijacking peoples perception and memories to make them think they exist and have done so as early as 1934. It led to the creation of a club dedicated to chase and shoot the houses, called The House Club. President Ronald Reagan would be part of this club, and would recollect approaching one of the houses on a boat to shoot its windows, mentioning that they would not break. They questioned what the windows, and moreover, what the house was made of. He would also mention that if they approached the house, it would move away from them by "taking one long stride backward". He would also urge the American people in his recollection to stop shooting the house, as it cannot be damaged, and to instead use ranges in the US. Using a healthcare claim record, Reagan's condition after an incident with the House shows his face is completed covered in flesh. A "restored version" of the recollection urges Americans to keep shooting the house.

Little Lanky[]

Walt Disney would project a Mickey Mouse cartoon to a House off the coast in South America, and it would send back a warped version of the cartoon called Little Lanky. The Little Lanky cartoon is used by The Crescent King to rewire brains and input false memories of him inside of their heads. In the cartoon, Lanky is seen following a sign marked as "friends", attempting to find a companion. He meets several entities that cut off or break his limbs, or run him over using a train. He would eventually fall into a cave, where several spiky fish lead him to another "friends" sign, and when he follows it, he is lead into a room where The Crescent King sits. This is also a parallel to the abuse suffered by the Last Son in the canon reality. He would enter a cave with a face and teeth on it, representing The Last Son becoming the House, and would be seen being surrounded by fish, representing the ocean surrounding the House. Lanky approaching The Crescent King represents the fate that befell of The Last Son, and how he was forced to become said being, as it sat inside of the cave. In a second version of Little Lanky, we see Lanky converse with the King, and the King teleports his body and matches his crescent with the shape of the cosmological body in Little Lanky's sky, making the king become Little Lanky. This is an actual display of the conversion. The cartoon ends with an "it was all a dream" ending in the second version.

The Bushes' Ambush[]

President George Bush would attempt to put anti-House measures in place, a blockade of "killer wood chips" that a House would blow away within three years. Obama, in the wake of these explosions, would return to the beach and explain that they have been struggling with the House, and that the wood chips were lethal, as they coudl enter a victim's blood stream and cause them to become terminally ill. He urges all residents to sweep their porches daily and all beachgoers to stay away from the beaches and look away from the House. In the "restored" version, he instead tells beachgoers to continue looking at the House.

In 2011, explosions occured near Gainesville, Florida, that hurled debris toward houses around the area, sending many in the area in a panic. Officials would reveal in 2014 that it was a weapon systems test in the Gulf of Mexico held by both the US Navy and Air Force. A commenter on Facebook would post a video revealing the boom was caused by a House, which leads to the comment getting deleted and the account getting banned, implying that the House was the actual responsible.

Who lives inside the House[]

A man would then go to a House, but notes he has a huge lapse of memory, and can't remember where he was going and why, but does remember that a yellow flag on the beachside represented house sightings. This same man would figure out who "lives" inside the House: the Crescent King.

The Bushes' Saving[]

The Bushes would return to a house to shoot it once more, only to step inside and be ambushed by the house. Laura was launched by sudden changes in air pressure and lodged inside the window frame of the house, dying instantly, while George met a similar fate. This caused the house to be renamed in her honor. In the "restored" version of this documentation, they are said to be "saved" instead of ambushed (though it gives no evidence of their supposed "saving").

Bill Clinton would go on to say that "There is no House in the Ocean... there is only the House in your Head". It is also revealed in the Bush Ambush documentation that the Laura Bush picture is AI generated, and recreated, similar to how the human mind recreates reality for the brain.

The Earth's Voiding and the Houses' fate[]

An unidentified party, presumed to be the Crescent King, manipulated C/H/A/S/E The Wandering Robot into going to Antarctica and spell "VOID" in the polar sky. Outer forces hovering above Earth, presumably the Lunarians, would then read the message and moments later fire a missile at our planet, destroying it. It can be assumed that the Houses were destroyed in the wake of the explosion.

The meaning of "You are the Only House in the Ocean"[]

A set of statements are made to a non-specified party. "You thought it'd only end once?", "Your brain is suspended in fluid.", "You are the House in the Ocean." and "You are the only House in the Ocean." The first line speaks of a cosmological cycle in THE MONUMENT MYTHOS where Earth is destroyed multiple times by different means. The House in the Ocean is describing the human brain being the only thing one can prove to exist, a lone house existing in a vast ocean of reality, forcing others to perceive it through interaction, whether it be consented or forceful.

This is also speaking about The Last Son, being the only true House in the Ocean, as it is his childhood home, erected as an apology to those he had hurt. Finally, it also was a reference and dedication to MISTER MANTICORE's father and the idea of grievance, something staying in your head and that will always exist in your mind, hence, "No one is gone forever".
