The Hunter is the opening antagonist of the 2021 indie horror video game Little Nightmares 2, serving as the main antagonist of the first chapter "The Wilderness". An aggressive, unrelenting taxidermist living in the outskirts of the Pale City, the Hunter not only kills animals, but also people unlucky enough to get caught in his traps or cross paths with him, just so he can add them to his crude trophy collection.
Characteristics
Little is known about what the Hunter thinks, as his only form of communication are a series of high-pitched groans and labored breathing. However, it is revealed through the Hunter's actions that he is a cunning, homicidal lunatic. Beyond his twisted obsession with taxidermy and collecting dozens of pelts, the Hunter has no definitive motive for slaughtering animals, his own kind or children alike, treating any living thing besides himself as nothing more than prey. Intelligent enough to litter the Wilderness with traps to catch and kill his prey, the Hunter seems to have no intention of letting any living thing unlucky enough to enter his territory leave alive and the fact that he keeps track of his kills by turning his victims into taxidermized trophies possibly indicates a sense of pride in his work. The Hunter also seems to neglect the state of his house, having left it filthy and unkempt because of how much time he spends hunting and skinning animals. In addition to being ruthless and short-tempered, the Hunter is remarkably persistent, determined to kill Mono and Six as soon as possible once he sets his eyes on them. Despite being the first threat Mono and Six have to deal with in the game, the Hunter's unrelenting behavior and violent nature make him an unexpected force to be reckoned with, never giving up on his pursuit of Mono and Six until they kill him.
Unlike other antagonists in the series, the Hunter is always armed with a double-barrel shotgun that he uses with deadly precision, forcing Mono and Six to frequently take cover whenever the Hunter chases them. The Hunter also uses a lantern to search for his prey in the dark, thus requiring Mono and Six to use the Wilderness' environment to their advantage during timed stealth sections to avoid being spotted. The combined usage of his shotgun and lantern makes the Hunter very alert at all times, reacting to any form of noise or movement (such as crows flying off or a log being pushed over) and will quickly kill Mono if he stays out in the open for too long. However, the Hunter's mask possibly obscures his vision at times, as he is unable to spot Mono and Six in tall grass as long as they stay still. Lastly, like most beings of his stature, the Hunter is shown to be physically strong, as he can smash through wooden doors or bolted planks with little effort.
Appearance
In spite of his rather stubby build, the Hunter is a large humanoid entity who towers over children like Mono and Six. His most striking feature is the burlap sack used to mask his oversized head: the Hunter has only cut a single large eyehole open for him to see and keeps the mask tied around his neck with a rope to keep it from coming off. The Hunter's face is never seen and it is unknown why the Hunter wears this mask or why he only cut one eyehole open, but as is the case with the majority of the monsters in the series, it is likely that his face is hideous. The Hunter appears to wear a shabby dark green coat, a pair of leather gloves, boots, brown pants and a brown Newsboy cap atop his head. Mysteriously, cotton stuffing seems to be leaking out of various rips on his coat, most notably on his right shoulder and around his waist. It is never explained why the Hunter is leaking cotton wool, but it may be linked to his fascination for taxidermy. He is always armed with a large, double-barrel shotgun and a lantern-style flashlight whenever he is out on a hunt.
Biography
Background
Nothing is known about the Hunter's past other than the fact that he lives in a messy house hidden deep within the Wilderness outside of the collapsing Pale City. He has spent a significant portion of his time hunting for animals in the woods with his shotgun and has set up dozens of booby traps (including bear traps camouflaged by leaves) around his territory to catch more. The Hunter frequently takes the animals he kills to a workshop where he rips them apart for their pelts and dumps their organs outside through a small door. Notably, the Hunter specializes in taxidermy, which may explain why he hunts animals if he isn't just hunting them for food.
However, in addition to animals, the Hunter has also murdered several people, which is where the majority of the Hunter's crude taxidermy work is put into. The Hunter's victims include dozens of bodies contained in a large sack hanging from a tree; a buried corpse with a large shovel sticking out of the grave; a dead child in a hanging cage trap; a taxidermized woman in the Hunter's attic, where a few corpses in sacks are also stored and a taxidermized family of three posed at a table to crudely mimic a family dinner. The husband of the family is missing his arm and has been decapitated, having had his head stuck onto what appears to be a mannequin piece sticking out of his neck; the wife no longer has a face and her head is completely stuffed with wool and the son has cotton wool leaking out of his eye socket. It is unknown why the Hunter killing people and keeping them as trophies, but nonetheless seeks to take more lives.
Digital Comic
The Hunter makes an appearance in the first chapter of the promotional digital comic book app for Little Nightmares 2. The chapter begins with Six getting chased through the woods by the Hunter. While hiding behind the tree, Six throws a stone in the opposite direction of where she is in to distract the Hunter, who immediately shoots at the stone the moment he hears it hit the ground. Six uses this as an opportunity to escape through a tunnel under a tree. On the other side of the tunnel, Six spots a boy wearing a paper bag of his head named Mono sitting on a tree branch. However, the chapter ends with the Hunter suddenly stepping out in front of Six. The Hunter then kidnaps Six and keeps her as a prisoner in his basement for approximately a month.
Little Nightmares 2
After evading several of the Hunter's traps throughout the Wilderness, Mono sneaks into the Hunter's house and rescues Six by breaking into her room with a hatchet. After Six runs away from Mono, the boy tries to catch up to her while the Hunter makes his presence known in another room. The two children decide to work together in an effort to escape the house. When Mono and Six enter a shed full of animal pelts, they are forced to sneak past the Hunter himself, who is skinning a dead animal at his workbench. Their escape through a small door in the side of the shed catches the attention of the Hunter, who bursts outside and hastily shoots at the children. Mono and Six both evade the Hunter's gunshots by taking cover behind several crates and hide. Having lost track of Mono and Six, the Hunter travels ahead in search of them instead of returning home, forcing the two children to sneak past him by hiding in the tall grass. The Hunter almost spots them after they accidentally scare off a crow, but Mono and Six manage to escape by diving into a tunnel under a tree. The Hunter tries to kill them by firing into the tunnel's entrance in hopes that it hits them, but is unsuccessful.
Further ahead, Mono and Six cross paths with the Hunter again outside of a barn. Immediately trying to kill the children again, Mono and Six climb into the barn and sprint to the other side of it as the Hunter bursts in and fires at them. The Hunter loses track of them again once Mono and Six jump out of the barn's window and hide in the swamp. The children sneak through the swamp while the Hunter searches for them on the wooden walkway. Once Mono and Six make their way out of the swamp, they accidentally scare off a pair of crows, alerting the Hunter to their presence. Forced to sprint from cover to cover once again as the Hunter fires upon them, Mono and Six sprint into a small shed where they find themselves cornered. As Six locks the door though, Mono sees the Hunter's spare shotgun hung on the wall and pulls it down. As the Hunter violently tries to break in, Six lifts the barrel of the shotgun up and aims it at the door. Just as the Hunter peers through a crack in the door, Mono grabs the handle of the shotgun and blasts the Hunter away, killing him once and for all. Mono and Six proceed to escape from the Wilderness by using a door as a boat to travel to the Pale City's shore, where their real journey begins.
