The Hunter is one of the main antagonists of the 2023 video game Starfield, serving as the main antagonist of the main quest. He is a member of the immortal race known as "Starborn" and relentlessly seeks a series of objects known as the "Artifacts", which allow the user to both gain power and travel to other universes via the multiuniversal nexus known as the Unity.
He is voiced by Phil Crowley.
Biography[]
Prior to Starfield[]
Sometime in the distant past, thousands of universes prior to the Starfarer's, the Hunter began his search for the Artifacts. He reached the Unity thousands of times, becoming more powerful with each jump. Eventually, he realizes that the fastest way to reach the Unity is to hunt and kill the members of Constellation, an exploration group that has also stumbled upon the Artifacts in each universe the Hunter has entered. Each time he attacks Constellation, he kills an iteration of the Starfarer, causing the Starfarer's closest companion to seek a way to end the violence by becoming the Starborn Emissary, who in turn becomes the Hunter's nemesis in each new universe.
After hundreds of additional cycles, the Hunter eventually arrives in one particular universe, where the Starfarer has survived a series of events that usually result in their death.
Starfield[]
The Hunter is first encountered in New Atlantis after defeating Brogan, surviving the Crimson Fleet Ambush, and making it out of the Narion system, when the player enters the Viewport. after that, he can be found at the hitching post in Akila City.
The first quest where we fight him is High Price to Pay, when he attacks Constellation in an attempt to gain the artifacts. This results in somebody dying on either the Eye or in the Constellation Lodge, but somebody does die regardless. For example, Sam Coe can die if you choose to defend the Lodge, or Barrett could die if you head to the Eye instead, it is dependant on who you have the highest affinity with.
During High Price to Pay he attacks the Spacefarer repeatedly in New Atlantis. Technically he can be killed, but he will always vanish after lowering his health to a certain point. after a few quests, the Player and the two Starborn, the Hunter and the Emissary meet in the Scorpius system, where he revealed his origin as Keeper Aqulius to the Spacefarer. Eventually the Spacefarer must make a decision to side with the Emissary or Hunter. If you side with the Hunter, you will have to fight the Emissary at Masada III, in the location known as the buried temple.
Regardless of whether or not you kill The Hunter, Emissary or both, The Unity reveals that since Starborn are made of energy, they can't be killed and can only be destroyed, however due to The Spacefarer becoming a unique Starborn, as the only version of themselves to reach The Unity and that when you kill a Starborn from that point on, it is possible other Starborn can absorb the energy left from "deceased" Starborn.
