~ Website Description. |
The Janitor is a major antagonist in the indie horror video game Little Nightmares and its DLC Secrets of The Maw. He is a blind employee in The Maw with abnormally long arms, which he uses to check his surroundings and climb around the Maw. He lurks in the lower part of The Maw, tending to its many rooms. He is in charge of capturing and enslaving children in a prison part of the Maw, where they are transported to the kitchen in sacks and prepared as food.
Characteristics[]
The history of this character's past is hinted at in a number of occasions, but not all of these hints are found in game. The official site refers to his past using words like "forgotten" when referring to his past, implying that he may have either been forgotten or that he forgot his past. We know that he came from The Pale City, as we see his face displayed in The Hospital. This tells us that he was possibly a past Patient and/or Viewer that was experimented on by the Doctor.
The Janitor's main "gimmick" is his abnormally long arms. He uses them to climb around the Maw, allowing him to go from floor to floor. He uses his long arms to compensate for his lack of eye-sight. Having his view being taken away by the skin being drooped over his eyes, his other senses are incredibly heightened (most notably his hearing). The player can shine a light in his face and he won't be able to tell. He isn't able to handle any sort of loud noise, making such loud noises will distract him from dealing with any nearby children that may have caused it.
Although his title is "The Janitor", his main job on the Maw seems to be capturing and imprisoning children. He finds them crawling around, puts them in a prison, and then later puts them in meet sacks that are sent to the kitchen to be cooked. In his free time, he wanders the lower part of the Maw, tending to it's different parts. He has a room full of dolls which he checks on regularly, as well as a room full of clocks and even a library. In his room, much of the furniture seems to have been made to suit his specific anatomy, having very tall drawers and shelves meant to be reached by his incredibly long hands.
Appearance[]
The Janitor has a smooth scalp, ages caucasian skin sagging over his eyes, crooked teeth, normal ears/nose, a button-up suit (which suits his long arms), long arms, very small legs, a brown hat atop his scalp, a name-tag, small brownish-green pants, and brown shoes.
History[]
Little Nightmares[]
The Janitor is the first monstrous humanoid that Six encounters on The Maw. After passing the Leeches section and passing onto the next, Six can see the Janitor in the far background dragging a cage with what looks like a child inside of it. After passing a few obstacles (including an Eye), you will reach a room filled with beds. After taking a few steps in and hiding under a bed, the Janitor will enter the room. Six has stand very still while the Janitor goes about his business and passes through. He isn't seen for a while after this, but Six will have to enter his room. It is filled with very tall cabbages and pictures hung up very high, including one of him. Not soon after this, Six will grow very hungry and go in search of food. They will find a cage with a piece of food inside of it, which will prompt them to climb inside and eat it. After a few moments of eating, the Janitor's hand will appear and close it.
The player will wake in a room filled with other caged children. The Janitor will take one of these cages and exit the room. Just a few rooms down, he began continuing his work of putting meat on hooks which lead deeper into the Maw. Six will have to sneak past him, but no matter what, he will pick up their scent. Six will need to get past him without alerting him that they're there in order to get to the next room. Once in the next room, Six will install a handle and open a trap door in the floor. The Janitor will enter not soon after Six begins cranking, but Six narrowly escapes. After making their way through the pipes and past the Shoe Monster, Six will reach a hallway that leads to an elevator. While walking down, The Janitor will hop down from the ceiling and chase after them. Six will need to make it into the elevator before him and hide in a box on the far right. The Janitor will enter the elevator, make it rise, and then begin feeling around for Six. Just before he finds them, Nomes will run out of the elevator, and The Janitor will chase after them.
This next section contains The Janitor's collection of dolls. Six will wonder underneath the floorboards while The Janitor walks in between rooms. While in the doll room, Six will emerge in the room next to it and make a cymbals monkey clap on the floor. This will distract The Janitor, and Six will have to make it to the doll room and crawl up a cabinet. Six will slowly make their way through the ventilation until they arrive in a room The Janitor was just exiting (via the ceiling). At the end of this room is a door that Six will push over, causing Grand Father clocks to fall over and make really loud noises. The Janitor will arrive in the room and try to attend to the clocks while Six makes her way to the next room. The next room is also filled with clocks, and Six will need to run down it while The Janitor chases them. They will reach a room filled with books, and Six will climb up them in order to make it to the next room. Just before they reach the top, The Janitor will drop down and enter the room before you. This room is a room filled with bookshelves. Six will make their way along these while The Janitor explores the room. While talking around, Six will knock over objects in their way. This will cause The Janitor to feel around for the cause of what dropped them. In the back of this room is another room with a crank and a TV. Six enters, grabs the crank, turns the TV on, and hides behind a brief case. The Janitor will enter and turn it off while Six sneaks past them with the crank. They will make their way to the entrance and install the crank so that they life up the piano and use it to get to the next room. Like the first crank pulse, The Janitor will hear this, run to the noise, and try to grab Six.
Six will solve a few more puzzles until they reach a small hallway filled with pipes. While walking down this hallway, The Janitor will stick his arms through the cracks and try to grab Six. Once he fails, he will feel around the pipes while Six sneaks past him. Exiting this room will lead Six to a large hallway that they will need to run down while The Janitor chases them. At the end of this hallway is another elevator. While being chases, the doors will close behind them. The door to the elevator has a cage underneath it that will keep it from closing. It will create a space that Six will slide through, but The Janitor won't give up on trying to get them. They will reach their hands in and feel around the elevator while Six deconstructs the cage's bars in order to make it collapse. Once collapsed, The Janitor's arms will be cut off, and he will scream in agony while Six moves on to the next area.
Little Nightmares: Secrets Of The Maw[]
The Janitor appears in a sub-chapter known as Secrets Of The Maw. Instead of Six, the main character will be a different runaway child. In Chapter 1, The Janitor is seen on the floor below the bedroom catching a runaway child. He eventually grabs them and walks away. He isn't seen until the very end of this chapter, after the child escapes The Depths. Once he climbs up the latter and through the vent, The Janitor will grab him and put him in a cage.
In Chapter 2, the child will escape the cages and make his way deeper into The Maw. The Janitor isn't seen until the child enters the doll room from the main game. While The Janitor wanders the three connecting rooms, the child will have to solve puzzles. The Janitor will chase him whenever he makes too much noise. Eventually, the child will turn on the buzz saw. Due to it's loud noise, The Janitor will forget the child and attend to turning this off instead. While he does, the child will turn a crank that opens a cellar door which he exits through. He is last seen standing in the hallways of the coal areas in the dark. The child will have to sneak past him without making noise.
