~ The Giant referring to The King. |
The King, later known as The Beheaded, is the main protagonist of the 2018 indie game Dead Cells. He serves as the monarch of the nameless Island the game is centered on.
Appearance[]
The king wears a massive golden crown-like helmet, a white robe with a large purple streak in the center. He wears a golden chest plate on his robe, surrounded by regal shoulder-wear.
Biography[]
The King was the ruler of the Island. Not much was known about what he did prior to the Malaise pandemic. When the pandemic hit, he ordered his Royal Alchemist to find a cure for the ravaging disease. Many people became sick to the disease and were spreading it all around the Island. To stop this, the King ordered the imprisonment of almost every sick islander. This eventually gave way to mass execution, and even if the prisoners had finished their sentence, he ordered the prison chief, Castaing, to keep them inside the prison.
Eventually, the prisons became overloaded, so he had ordered to throw some prisoners in the oubliettes and even resorted to banishing people into Morass and burning them in the Ossuar. Because of his actions, people across the island became enraged about the King's actions, saying that they would kill him. One of the King's guards, the Giant, opposed the King's actions. Because of this, he was executed and thrown in the Prisoner's Quarters, and it didn't take long before the situation got worse. The Malaise eventually revived the dead, creating an army of zombies and mutated people. Though it's unknown how, he immortalized himself as a strange entity that could control beheaded bodies, named The Beheaded.
The Beheaded is unaware that he is the King, and seeks to kill him. After fighting his way through High Peak Castle, he enters the King's Throne Room. Preventing him from killing him however, is the Hand of the King, his bodyguard. The Beheaded kills the Hand, using the lance he used to break the barrier around the king. The King does not react to anything, being essentially dead. Regardless, the Beheaded grabs the King by neck, and impales him with the lance. The King floats above, and explodes into an energy explosion. It is unknown why this happens.

Fall Guys[]
A costume appears for The Beheaded (called "The Prisoner" in-game) within the 2020 multiplayer party game Fall Guys, with the costume first being released in October 2021. Notably, the design pulls from The Beheaded's design from the animated trailers for the game.
Trivia[]
- Oddly, the animated trailers for Dead Cells depict The Beheaded as having a singular, massive eyeball on its head, as opposed to the singular gleaming eye found in the game.
