The Lawnmower is the main antagonist of the 1989 Comedy Horror film Blades, it is a possessed lawnmower that goes on a rampage throughout the luscious golf course of Tall Grass Country Club on the eve of a massive golf tournament, and it's up to Roy Kent, Kelly Lange, and Deke Slade to defeat it.

Its sounds were provided by John Hodian.

Biography[]

On the eve of a big golf tournament at Tall Grass Country Club, two mangled bodies are discovered in one of the sand traps much to the horror of the new pro Roy Kent, and assistant pro Kelly Lange. Club Owner Norman Osgood doesn't want any negative attention to his establishment, so he requests to keep the investigation quiet. When Club Member Malcolm Simpkins is killed off, Roy Kent and Kelly Lange become more and more serious about catching the murderer behind this.

After a young caddy is killed in front of everyone, Norman puts a bounty on the murderer, causing a bunch of drunken hunters, organized by Police Chief Charlie Kimmel, to make the situation even worse. Deke Slade is falsely caught and accused of being the murderer, then is imprisoned. On the day of tournament, after Squire Evans steals the victory from Kelly, The Lawnmower reveals itself and kills him, causing mass panic.

Norman Let's Deke free, allowing Roy, Kelly, and Deke to all head out to fight to the death with The Lawnmower, ending with Deke being killed, and The Lawnmower meeting its end when Roy hits a golf ball into an explosive device on its engine, causing it to explode, saving Tall Grass Country Club.

In a post credit scene, a hedge trimmer that's presumably possessed by the same thing possessing The Lawnmower turns on by itself, followed by text, Hedges: Just When You Thought It Was Safe to Trim.

It's unknown if any of the drunken hunters organized by Charlie Kimmel were killed by The Lawnmower, but it isn't too unlikely. We know that they were deep in the woods, one of The Lawnmower's favorite hunting areas.

Trivia[]

  • Blades is Robert North's only acting credit.
  • The film never explains how The Lawnmower was possessed, or why it killed Deke's Father since he had given it so much care.
  • The machine made for Blades wasn't tested on grass by its creator, so it usually malfunctioned and broke down, similar to the animatronic shark used in Jaws.
  • Lawnmower Wrangler Will “Boom Boom” Caban reportedly said that he couldn't wait to blow up The Lawnmower at the end of Blades.
