~ Marvin E. Leigh encountering a lifeform in pitfalls. |
The Lifeforms or Entities are the main antagonists of the independent analog horror web series Backrooms and its upcoming 2025, A24 Films-supported film adaptation. They are an aggressive species of bacteria-based monsters within the Backrooms who hunt down any humans unfortunate enough to accidentally "Noclip" into their home world.
History[]
The origins of The Backrooms entities are completely unknown, they've likely been in the Backrooms ever since its creation, But what is known is that they are a major threat to all the protagonists of the series & are composed of a mutated strain of hay bacillus with anomalous properties.
Appearance[]
Despite each Lifeform having distant otherworldly forms, the surreal alternate reality species all to some extent have a blackish & clunky (sometimes metallic) humanoid appearance. They are hardly uninterpretable, as even a close-up of their face (like in the first Found Footage) is difficult to make out, even if it's mostly due to the quality of the camera used to record the tapes. Unlike the dimension it exists in, which is full of an assortment of furniture, chairs, & assets, attempting to mimic environments but in an unnatural alien manner, the lifeform fellows look incredibly unalike, which can be speculated how they were even created or if the backrooms are even their actual home dimension. Despite the inconsistency in the "species" similar bodies/silhouettes are possible, as the Found Footage 1 Lifeform & the Pitfalls one like identical, both have clunkily appearances.
The monster in Found Footage 3 looks more humanoid than the other lifeforms, though they still look uninterpretable.
Appearances (Not in Order)[]
Found Footage 1[]
Kane Pixels & his friends were filming for a school project on July 4, 1991, and would record a wider action for the day, but as he backed up he fell into the backrooms. Confused, he began exploring the labyrinth, searching for an exit. As he ventures, he hears something behind him, when he looks behind, he sees a glimpse of a silhouette quickly retreat from his sight. Going further into the rooms, he comes across written arrows on the wall which lead to a collection of crude drawings, hand prints, & writing on a wall: With an illustration of a window, a human face, tallies, something unintelligible about god, & large text saying "DONT MOVE STAY STILL." As Kane read the text he is interrupted by the lifeform that was stalking him. The monster & Kane get into a chase across the corridors, with Kane running back to where he noclipped. Finding a dead end with a hole in the floor, Kane had no choice but to fall in to evade the lifeform. In an office industrial-esque location, Kane finds an exit door that leads back to the previous monochromatic yellow halls. He later reencounters the monster who threw a chair across the hall. Kane hides in a slim room in the wall & sees the monster which looks like a metal amalgamation of wires making crackling noises as it moves. The entity then caught Kane & killed him, knocking off his camera noclipped back into the real world & fell into someone's backyard from the sky.
Missing Persons & Autopsy Report[]
After the sixth test of Async's low-proximity magnetic distortion system was successful, the missing persons rate started to rise exponentially. Four Async Hazmat personnel venture into the backrooms & discover the decaying body of a male adult wearing a hoodie, with lots of black bacteria that seeped from the carcass bleeding into the walls & floor.
The team extracts the body & takes it in for an autopsy report. They discovered that some parts of the corpse by anomalous means stopped decomposing & were sustained, while other parts were fully taken over by culture. The bacteria found, which is a mutated strain of hay bacillus, somehow managed to completely infect & affect the carcass, despite the bacteria being completely harmless. The Async forensic pathologist askes the director Ivan Beck where they found this subject.
Whether or not the late individual died to a lifeform is speculative.
Motion Detected[]
Async started to build a base next to the Magnetic distortion system. 7 video cameras modified to record any motion or noise detected were set up across the local area. What follows is a compilation of the gathering recordings, most of which were just researchers passing by, going into the complex, & returning, the closing sound of the threshold barrier, & two technical failures. But the last recording of the montage, which is nameless, shows a formless black "blob" peaking from a corner, observing the establishment & camera before leaving.
Pitfalls[]
A team of 4 scientists is sent to explore a specific sector of the complex outside of division A. Into the labyrinth the group finds a strange room with square holes in a grid-like pattern (called Pitfalls) & a brown wooden door at the end. They decided to send one of their colleagues to walk across the narrow floor to the door. When he makes it to the door & opens it he insists the cameraman, Marvin E. Leigh, go to him & give him the camera, but when he tries to walk to him he accidentally slips & tumbles to the left hole, and the area beneath the pitfalls. Instructed by his peers to stay where he is so they can rescue him, Marv obliges & observes his surroundings, but is suddenly alarmed by a loud plead for help across the hall. Marvin goes to the source of the voice to a tiled gap that leads from a tunnel to a surreal recreation of a suburban town bathed in red lighting. Marvin's team insists he remains at the hole, but Marvin refuses, asking "if Miller is right about the Null zones." Astonished at the completely unpredictable shift of architecture the voice Marv heard yelled again for help. Marvin enters a house the voice is coming from, what he comes across is a random orientation of mirrored turning signs protruding from the carpet floor that confuses Marv & his squad. Going into the house he finds out the building is much bigger on the outside than inside, he discovers a room with two chairs, a backpack & cardboard, metal numbers, & mold everywhere as if someone was living there. Marvin then finds a very long white hall with an uninterpretable figure across. Marvin found the source of the screams, But when he zoomed in for a better view, he realized the figure was not a person. Realizing this, The lifeform sprinted towards Marv, roaring distortedly. Marv ran back from the suburban home back to the hole he fell from. His team quickly got him back to the surface.
Report[]
After the incident, the team makes it back to the threshold & is greeted by an elderly figure. Two scientists view Marv's camera footage, analyzing the contents, while an unnamed black scientist takes an elevator to call someone. Watching the part where Marv comes face to face with the supposed lost person in need of help, they rewind to the clearer shot of the anomaly. Both scientists are terrified by what the encountered lifeform could be, now very fearful of what else could lie within the complex. Aware of the dangers in the dimension Async contracts a construction team to seal off the area Marvin's team went to, just in case the lifeform finds the research threshold & breaches into the real world. The window of the threshold closes & the episode ends.
Found Footage 2[]
A nameless teenage girl narrates about how she found a strange "hole" in her garage with the borders duck taped. She demonstrates this by throwing various objects into the hole. She then uses a tape measure to discover how deep the hole goes, but when she does the camera shakes & she noclips into the backrooms. Wandering the halls of the labyrinth she comes across a car crashed into a wall next to a room that appears to be the inside of a home. Going into the house with night vision on, she comes across a room filled with black thick vines everywhere, what catches her attention is a painting. But when she observes the painting a lifeform wakes up & chases the protagonist down. She goes into a hole leading to a pool-themed environment. Running further away from the monster, she makes it to a dead end. She hides in a small tight room from the monster, but when she says quiet the room starts to shift & suddenly a green light lights up the whole room & glowing cracks start to form on the walls. Then the footage ends.
Reunion[]
After sealing off the area the research team Marvin was a part of, Async sends an unmanned probe into the corridor to the pitfalls to confirm its safe. A construction team is sent to seal off the pitfall holes so no incident of someone accidentally falling into the holes occurs again. An armed hazmat unit gets sent with Marvin's squad to explore an unknown area in the complex.

Trivia[]
- In Kane Pixels' Ko-Fi page, one of the posts with a render of the Found Footage Lifeform is called "Bacteria." This led many fans to believe that lifeforms are mutated bacteria creatures.
- This is evident with the corpse in Autopsy Report from Missing Persons, which is covered with hay bacillus, with some portions of the corpse not decayed. The scientist also described how unnatural it is for a harmless bacteria to completely take over a body.
- Kane stated many times the lifeforms are not zombies, but that doesn't mean the bacteria monsters weren't human, evidence of people who previously resided in the world is everywhere throughout the series (Mostly in found footage 1, 3, & pitfalls) & the monsters (almost) all make human noises, sounds, & words.
- It is also likely that the bacteria can mimic people.
