The Lion's Mane jellyfish (scientific name: Cyanea capillata) is a major antagonist in the Sherlock Holmes franchise.
It's a Cyanea capillata that was speculated to have been blown over to the great detective's general area due to strong winds. The creature is Sherlock's penultimate adversary that we know of in the original canon, being an antagonist to him after his retirement to the Sussex Downs. It was responsible for the deaths of Fitzroy McPherson and his dog.
History[]
The Adventure of the Lion's Mane[]
The cyanea's presence is first felt in the story when the science teacher at The Gables school, Fitzroy McPherson, collapses out of shear agony in front of Sherlock and his friend, Harold Stackhurst, uttering his final words in the process: "lion's mane."
Sherlock and Stackhurst proceed to investigate the man's body, taking note of several peculiar injuries that resemble those of a scourge or whip.
