Ursula and Ella De Vil, simply known as The Maids are the secondary antagonists in When Marnie Was There. They are twin caretakers of Marnie and lives on the Marsh mansion. They and the Nan are the bullies of Marnie while her parents are away from traveling.

The maids voices on Japanese and dub are unknown.

Biography

When Marnie's parents are always traveling abroad, she is left behind with Georgina Gordon the Nan and the twin maids, Ursula and Ella De Vil, who abuses her physically and psychologically. Marnie has no option but to stay with the maids that constantly bully her when the parents are not around. While Nan and the maids were having tea, Marnie sneaks out from the house and had fun in the woods.

Once, the maids wasted no time scaring Marnie to keep her in line. They threatened to lock her in a silo near the house, where they kept telling Marnie the cyclone on top of the cliff is where bad kids get put to and getting their souls eaten by ghosts, hence Marnie’s fear of that place. They dragged Marnie to the silo, but the lightning strikes and frightens her and the maids and they run back to the house. It's a small gesture that doesn't get any focus, but it seems to indicate some sort of limit to the amount of abuse and bullying they're willing to inflict on Marnie.

After Marnie grew up and moved to Sapporo, she got married to her childhood friend, Kazuhiko. Nan and the maids were never seen again. It is unknown if they got fired by Marnie's parents or arrested for their crimes of abusing Marnie and lying to them behind their backs, or they died getting struck by lightning like Anna Sasaki hoped.

Appearance

The maids look exactly the same, but the parting of the hair and the moles around the eyes are reversed left to right. Ursula's mole is on the right and Ella's mole is on the left.

Trivia

• Ursula and Ella were named Ettie and Lilly in the original book, and their personalities are different. In the movie, they have changed into twins and their names are changed to Ursula and Ella with similar appearances.
• In the novel, Lilly is really nice. She makes fries for Marnie in bed. Ettie is nasty and likes to scare people. The maids argued about stealing Ettie's boyfriend. Ettie drags Marnie to the silo to scare her. In the anime, Ursula and Ella were bullying Marnie. Ella is not like Lilly in the book.
