What's the point of powerful mutation if you can't replicate and weaponize it?
~ The Major revealing her true motivations to Saanvi.

General Kathryn Fitz, better known as the Major, is one of the two secondary antagonists (alongside Jace Baylor) of the drama television series Manifest.

Fitz is a military general who abducted passengers from the missing Flight 828 and conducted psychologically torturous experiments in order to understand the supernatural Callings phenomenon. She hides behind her status and has several scientists and soldiers on her pay to do her bidding and becomes a major threat to the characters on the run from her.

She was portrayed by Elizabeth Marvel.

Biography[]

Although it's not confirmed, it's evident that Fitz somehow managed to predict the anomaly that occurred on Flight 828, as when the passengers left she readily ordered a handful of buses to take test subjects to a research facility. This is noticed as math instructor Ben Stone and NSA director Robert Vance work together to investigate the nature of flight 828, and Ben's sister Michaela and her ex-finacé Jared, members of NYPD find the base guarded by troops. An escapee of the facility meets with Michaela and the passengers realize that their telepathic calling abilities blessed by the flight are triggered by Fitz's experimentation practices. With help from Ben's son Cal, a target of Fitz for having stronger callings they locate the facility and start a shootout involving Vance's men. Vance is presumed killed in the raid and Fitz flees.

The Major mostly works behind the scenes in the following episodes and the second season posing as Ellen Raiger, a therapist who helps passenger Saanvi Bhal after she suffers PTSD from being assaulted by a member of the Believer's church. This leads to her siphoning info out of Saanvi when she talks about the callings. Through her, they discover that the Major has been stealing Saanvi's research and attempted to attack her. This leads Saanvi to confront Fitz in an effort to cure Zeke Landon, whom Cal rescued with his callings from a blizzard. Saavni injects Fitz with an allergen to threaten her, but it backfires and kills her, closing her opportunity to further experiment on the passengers.

Personality[]

Kathryn Fitz on the surface appears to be a cold, calculated, and ruthless leader of her Flight-828 research project, be willing to have people killed, tortured, and experimented on in order to figure out how to use the callings and weaponize them for the United States government. She also viewed regular citizens with contempt, as she referred to Saanvi as an ant, and someone not even worth speaking to.

During her time as Saanvi's therapist, she was shown to be extremely manipulative, being able to coerce Saanvi into giving up all of the information about her research. Despite this, she actually did help with Saanvi's anxiety, to the point that Saanvi would still listen to recordings of their sessions even after accidentally killing her. This softer side of Kathryn could also be seen in her relationship with her daughter Sarah, who she was shown to be relatively close with.
