The Major is the main antagonist of Stephen King’s horror novel The Long Walk.

He is a manipulative and charismatic militiaman who hosts the titular walking contest, where one hundred teenage boys walk without rest at a speed of at least four miles an hour, getting killed if they break this speed, until only one boy remains.

Biography[]

Due to his enigmatic past, not much is known about the Major. What is known about him is that he has many children, having slept with many women, but does not stick around or keep track of the number of kids he has. He does not even recognize one of his sons, Stebbins, who joins the walking contest.

Before the events of the contest, the Major will arrive to assign each walker their number, and wish them all luck.

The Major will occasionally join alongside the walking boys from his vehicle, cheering them on, but never executes any of the losing boys himself, instead having his soldiers do that for him.

Due to the ambiguous ending of the novel, it is unknown if the Major is awarding Garraty his Prize for winning the games, or perhaps ordering Garraty's execution, since Garraty's mind is so far gone from the events of the walk that it is tough to figure out reality from what is simply in Garraty's head.

Appearance[]

The Major's appearance is never explicitly described, but he is usually seen with reflective sunglasses, and is described to be in a military uniform of some sort.
