The Man in the Mask is the main antagonist of The Strangers franchise.

He is one of the three titular strangers and the sole male killer of the group, most likely the leader. Along with the other two killers, he helps them go around finding new victims to torment before murdering, with their only reason seeming to be for the sake of fun.

In the first film, he was portrayed by Kip Weeks, while Damian Maffei played him in Prey at Night.

Biography[]

The Strangers[]

After Kristen and James turned away Dollface, The Man In The Mask, alongside his two cohorts, began to stalk the couple in their home home. Having breaking into their house, The Man In The Mask is first seen in the shadows of the background as Kristen goes around in the kitchen before he dissapears, having cut her phone charger to keep it dead. When Kristen opens the window, The Man In The Mask scares her on the other side, resulting in her running away into the house. As Kristen and James attempt to leave, the two are boxed in when Pin-Up girl rams their car, and Man In The Man axes through the door, resulting in the two hiding in their room with a shotgun. However, James friends Mike comes to the house, having been told to earlier by James, and is led into the house and led by Man In The Mask, the act resulting in James accidentally shooting Mike in the head, with the door window writing ”KILLER.”

James attempts to make a run for the barn to get a radio, and almost shoots Pin-Up girl, but Man In The Mask ambushes him and knocks him out. When the radio is destroyed, Kristen hides away in the closet, and the Man In The Mask appears in the living room, looking for her. After seemingly walking away, Dollface appears and scares her, and Man In The Mask pushes James body on the ground, and promptly ambushes and knocks her out. When Kristen and James reawaken, they’re tied up in the seat as the trio of strangers are surrounding them. Kristen attempts to plead, claiming their haven’t seen their faces, prompting the three strangers to remove their masks (their faces not seen by the camera) and promptly join in on stabbing the couple brutally in their own home and eventually leaving, The Man In The Mask driving away in a truck.

Prey at Night[]

The Man In The Mask returns with his cohorts ten years after the first film, having killed Aunt Sheryl and Uncle Marv as the family go to the trailer home. Dollface knocks on their trailer, giving the same question about Tamara being home before leaving, with the three now deciding to target the family.

As Luke and Mike try to drive to get help, Man In The Mask tosses a cinder block, resulting in the car crashing and Mike being pinned by a beam. Mike sends Luke out to help his mother and sister, and after he leaves promising to come back, Man In The Mask comes over and enters the car. The Stranger takes out an awl and turns out the radio as Mike begs to be let go, before promptly stabbing the father in the neck, killing him and leaving. He later appears, in a truck, chasing Kinsey through the field.

As Luke and Kinsey reunite and patch up her leg wound, Man In The Mask rams his truck into the house, disarming the two of their weapon as the brother and sister escape. Luke hides the injured Kinsey under a trailer as Luke calls the cops, with the phone lines being shortly cut by Pin-Up girl.

After Luke manages to stab Pin-Up Girl to death, The Man In The Mask approaches and attacks Luke with an axe as Luke taunts him, falling into the pool together as the two struggle against a knife, the fight ending with Man In The Mask stabbing Luke in the back and leaving him to die in the pool, who shortly is saved by Kinsey.

After Kinsey manages to kill Dollface, The Man In The Mask rams Kinsey’s vehicle, t-boning it. Kinsey manages to use a lighter on spilled gas from the truck, resulting in the two cars blowing up in flames with Man In The Mask inside of it. But when Kinsey attempts to walk away, The Man In the Mask still lives as he slowly drives the still in flames car and chases after the running Kinsey. Having gotten to a bridge, Man In The Mask stops his truck and crawls out, stumbling towards Kinsey, completely burnt with a shard of glass in his torso. After removing the glass, The Man In The Mask falls to the ground, seemingly dead, but when Kinsey flags a truck and hops in the back, Man In The Mask appears and tries one last time to kill her, ending with Kinsey bashing him over the head with a a baseball bat. As Kinsey laughs while the truck drives away, Man In The Mask lays on the ground, seemingly dead.

Appearance[]

The Man wears a mask that appears to be made of cloth, covering his head entirely. There are two holes in it for his eyes and there appears to be a mouth sketched on the bottom of it. He also wears a brown suit jacket with a button up shirt beneath it. He appears to be physically tall and rather lean also, making sense given he appears to be the strongest of the three strangers. While his face is never shown in either of the films, when he unmasks himself before murdering James, the back of his head can be briefly seen. His hair appears to be rather short and slightly messy, being a darkish brown color.

After being burnt by Kinsey, the Man's mask appears to be melting into his skin, making one of his eyes a bit more visible. The mask itself appears to have been slightly blackened, likely from the flames and ash.

Personality[]

While he never speaks in either films, the Man in the Mask is made clear to be an absolute psychopath who enjoys toying with his victims before murdering them. He enjoys making sure that his victims are completely afraid and helpless, taunting them for hours, playing a cat and mouse game with them. When he and the other two killers unmask themselves before murdering James and attempting to kill Kristen, it was his final taunt by making it clear to the couple that they were both not going to survive and nobody could stop them. For a further display of sadism, the Man decides to sit down with a fatally injured Mike and listen to the radio with him as he begs for his life. The Man obviously doesn't listen and chooses to stab him in the throat with an awl, only further showing his cruelty.

If Dollface's "because you were home" taunt provides anything, the strangers just simply love to kill because of the thrill of it, amd the Man in the Mask is no different.

Trivia[]

  • Along with being the only male killer, the Man in the Mask is also the sole stranger who doesn't speak in either films.
  • While it is never directly said, with the Man in the Mask being the most dominant and brutal of the three killers, along with the entire fact he appears to be the one driving them around, it could be easily assumed the Man in the Mask is the leader of the strangers.
