How... To... Cage... An angel. Step one...
~ The Messenger appears with prophetic instructions to build a miracle machine.

The Messenger is a major character in the analog horror series Angel Engine, being the first character introduced into the series.

The Messenger is the being responsible for the creation of the Angel Engine, delivering messages and instructions across time. The Messenger was revealed to be Geoff Ernstmann himself from the distant future. He reaches out to his younger self two thousand years ago, guiding him to build the miracle machine.

Appearance[]

The messenger's pale face appears cracked and weathered, donning glossy eyes with heterochromia, one black and one blue. The mouth area is darkened and sunken. Long, stringy strands of dark hair stick out irregularly from his oddly shaped head, adding a wild, unkempt feel. His hands are clasped together, as if in prayer.

He appears in the starry night sky during visions when delivering his prophetic messages and instructions.

Biography[]

The Messenger appeared to Dr Geoff Ernstmann, a scientist that had fallen into obscurity and was struggling to find his next big break. He appeared to him in a mirror, offering instruction on how to cage an angel. Dr Ernstmann follows these instructions, capturing the angel Uriel. However, the doctor breaks his promise with the being, taking the angel's power for himself.

As the world began to corrupt, both the Messenger and Uriel warned about the coming of a deceiver. One even more powerful than the captured Uriel, who would not be able to be restrained. But the messenger grew absent as the Engine Angel Initiative rose in power. He only made his return after the resurrection of Geoff Ernstmann, coming with a new set of instructions on how to awaken the Angel Engine. He would not be seen again until after the bombs fell into the sky and the world fell into despair.

When the apocalypse came, the Messenger was restrained in wires and cables, surrounded by television screens. Flashes between the Messenger's face and Ernstmann's face revealed that they are somehow one and the same, separate only by time.

The Messenger's intentions are unclear and mysterious in nature. Despite having initially acted to warn of a deceiver coming to lead all astray, he was later revealed to bear the symbolic hole emerging from his face, an indication of the Antichrist's influence. He began to give instructions to bring forth mass indoctrination and forcing the youth to bear the Mark of the Beast. Worshiped as a false god, the surviving post-nuclear society had taken to serve him and the demonic forces of Babylon the Great.

Trivia[]

  • The subject of the Messenger's identity has been speculated by many. It was theorized he was another angel, such as Gabriel. Later it was theorized he and Uriel were the same being, as the Hero found the Messenger during his search for Uriel. But later entries disproved this, confirming that the Messenger and Geoff Ernstmann were the same person.
  • He was nicknamed Triangle Head by the community due to his oddly shaped head. He has no official name, simply referred to as Ernstmann during later episodes where he is worshiped by the false religion.
