My Boy! Why won't you play with me?
~ The North Wind
Your sister has been mine for a long time now.
~ The North Wind

The North Wind is the main antagonist of the first issue of the Little Nightmares comic book series. He's a being that controls storms and thrives on destruction. In his story, he seeks out and tortures a young boy until he was finally scared away by someone else who wanted the child.

Characteristics[]

The North Wind is a character that causes rampage and destruction to all villages and inhabitants that he comes across. Those who were born in the town where the main character grew up in the story were said to have been given special charms in order to ward him away. For some unspecified reason, the wind has a specific grudge with this town and it's people, as he is persistent in seeking out the main character. We also see that the Wind would destroy towns that the child hid in, and spare the residence living there, as we saw them holding pitchforks and torches during a riot demanding that the child and his "sister" leave.

In the main part of the story, the wind chased the child into a barn but for whatever reason wouldn't destroy it or even enter it. Instead, he stood outside and tried to manipulate the boy into coming outside. A wager that he mentioned having with someone may be the reason behind this. The wager that he held is heavily implied to have been with The Ferryman, as he was revealed to have been disguised as the child's sister the entire time. The Wind seems to have a particular fear or at least respect for the Ferryman, running away after he revealed who he really was.

While surrounding the barn, he would destroy any bird or other animal that mistakenly decided to cross into his wind, incinerating to nothing but bone instantaneously. Part of what we don't know about his character is his morals and goals. He appears to only drive pleasure from his actions, going so far as to hold onto the child's sister's corpse just so he could show it to him.

Appearance[]

The Wind does not make a clear appearance, only his silhouette being able to be made out in no more than two instances. From what we can see he appears to be a humanoid of sorts with a pointed head and two identical appendages around the areas of both ears. For most of the comic, he appears to be a red fog, only part of his body being in frame at a time. His true size is unknown.

History[]

At birth, children/citizens are given a special charm to protect them from The North Wind. One winter, the charms didn't work, and The North Wind destroyed everyone and everything. That is except for a small child, and his "sister".

The Wind chased the boy, but the boy was always one step ahead of him. Eventually; the boy found a barn and hid inside. He was able to survive off of small creatures that lived inside. All the while, the wind taunted him and tried to convince him to come out. The boy continuously refused and demanded that the wind leave. The wind told him that there would be no fun in that, and that he would be losing a wager to someone if he did. He referred to the adversary that he was participating in the bet with as a "Cheat". The wind then continued to try and persuade the boy as he killed all birds that were unfortunate enough to fly in his path. He mocked and then finally stated that it was over for the boy, and that he should just give up.

The boy told the wind that he had to stay strong for his sister, which further amused the wind, as he knew something the boy did not. He finally convinced the boy to step outside for just a moment so that he could show him something. Once the boy finally came out, he revealed his sister's corpse, telling him that he had taken her a long time ago. That was when the boy's "sister" smirked, and began to transform into his true form. His "sister" revealed himself to be The Ferryman, the entity who the North Wind had entered his wager with. The North Wind reached out to take the boy, but the Ferryman took him by the hand and led him away first, leaving the North Wind to complain that he was "so close" and it wasn't fair. The Ferryman then tricked the boy into agreeing to stay within the Maw by offering to keep him safe from the North Wind.

Quotes[]

Come out! Come out, now...
~ The North Wind
Leave you be? Where's the fun in that? To say nothing of the wager I'd lose... Even though my adversary is a bit of a cheat.
~ The North Wind
Oh, you poor lost thing...
~ The North Wind
Why are you making this so hard on yourself? Come now-- aren't you tired of running? Aren't you tired of hiding?
~ The North Wind
It's over. Admit it. Give up.
