Char Aznable has declared The Ogre (The Story of Thạch Sanh) is to be renamed to
Ogre (The Story of Thạch Sanh)
for the following reason(s): The "The" is unneeded.

Please discuss it on the talk page for this article.
"I told you I am not Casval, I am Char Aznable."

The Ogre is one of the two secondary antagonists (alongside the Eagle) of the fairytale The Story of Thạch Sanh. It is a demonic entity (often portrayed as a python) who eats people in Lý Thông's homeland each year, until it faces Thạch Sanh and is killed by him.

Biography[]

The Ogre is a dangerous entity who the King's army failed to defeat, and in exchange for the safety for Lý Thông's homeland he was forced to build a temple for it. Each year, there shall be one person from the land came to the temple so the Ogre could eat them.

By the time the tale starts, it is Lý Thông's turn, much to his fear. However, having recently adopted Thạch Sanh as his younger brother, he decides to trick Thạch Sanh to go instead by offering Thạch Sanh a meal and asked him to guard the temple. At the midnight, Thạch Sach is attacked by the ogre, and the two have an intense fight until dawn. The Ogre is exhausted from the fight and thus decapitated by Thạch Sanh, ending the monster's terror once and for all.

Thạch Sanh then burns the Ogre's body, and strangely, from the fire appear a bow and an arrow set, which he takes for himself, alongside the creature's head. When Thạch Sanh returns home and tells the story, Lý Thông pretends to be horrified and makes up the story that the Ogre is the King's pet. He then tells Thạch Sanh to go into hiding, and brings the head to the King and claims the credit of killing the Ogre for himself. As such, Lý Thông is honored by the King and made admiral.

In some versions, the Ogre's spirit later meets the Eagle's, and the two conspire to frame Thạch Sanh for a crime, which subsequently ends with him being arrested and thrown into prison (other versions attribute this act to Lý Thông, however).

Trivia[]

  • The Ogre is frequently portrayed as a python. This is likely because the Vietnamese translation of "ogre" is "chằn", which sounds similar to "trăn", which is Vietnamese for "python".
