The Original Nine, also known as the first of the Nine Titans, are minor characters in the manga and anime Attack on Titan. They were the more direct descendants, most likely grandchildren, of King Fritz and his concubine Ymir, who was the first Titan. They were the posthumous conquerors of Marley and the rest of the continent, this caused their nation of Eldia to become the new power on said continent, which eventually followed to the “Dark Ages”.
In time, presumably through marriages and political alliances between the Eldian nobility, eight of the Nine Titans would become the property of aristocratic Eldian families, who would gain the status of the Empire's most powerful ruling houses. The Founding Titan would remain property of the Fritz royal family, until it would become split by Karl Fritz into two separate branches several centuries since the Founder Ymir's death.
Appearances[]
In old history books, the Original Eight are presented with simplistic designs. Being drawn as older men with large sizes and beards. Their true forms are much more distinct, however.
Attack Titan[]
The first Attack Titan was like its future incarnations noticed for having a very muscular build, while still being fairly more “human” than the rest, who have hardened body altercations or are skinless. The Attack Titan of this person had long brown hair that slicked to the back of its head. The mouth was large and lacked lips causing the teeth to be constantly exposed out of the mouth. In the anime the Titan also had a short beard.
Colossal Titan[]
The first Colossal Titan appeared to be similar to all other Colossal Titans. It was much taller than the rest of the Titans. The body was completely skinless, constantly showing muscle with tendon tissue around the head and torso. The torso was large and wide with the arms being long and thin. The head was much smaller than the rest of the body, similarly to the Attack Titan, his mouth was also lipless, and its teeth were constantly visible. Although this wasn’t present in the anime.
Female Titan[]
The first Female Titan contrasted from the other Original Eight for being the only one with clear feminine features. It had a slim face and a rather petite, yet strong build. It had long blonde hair and the body lacked skin but had muscle surrounding all of the body, and had tissue adjoining the face, along with the upper chest. This Titan overall closely resembled the Titan of Annie Leonhart who was the last user of the Female Titan.
Beast Titan[]
Despite the varied types of Beast Titans that would eventually exist. The first Beast Titan looked closely to the Titan of Zeke Yeager, who was ironically the last true wielder of the Beast Titan. This Titan was slightly taller than the rest, with a broad body that had brown fur on it, except for on its lower chest with a beard and shaggy brown hair on its head. It also had elongated ears. Although Zeke’s Titan had a clear animal representing his form, that being a monkey. The first Beast looked more closely to that of a sasquatch.
War Hammer Titan[]
The first War Hammer Titan had like its future manifestations, a toughened layer of white skin that shielded the rest of the body. The only parts that didn’t had this were its eyes, mouth, and stomach that were exposed through a segmented web of hardened white casing. Despite the fact that its head was also encased, it had long tousled brown hair, which was shorter in the anime. This specific trait would eventually disappear from most other upcoming War Hammer Titans.
Armored Titan[]
The first Armored Titan was like its forthcoming incarnations noticed for having numerous separated hardened plates of skin surrounding the area of the torso, arms, face and head. The front part of the neck was unprotected exposing muscle tissue along with the front part of its chest. The armored plating surrounding its jawline seemingly prevented it from being capable of closing its mouth, causing its teeth to be constantly uncovered. In the manga, the Titan seemed to be bald, but in the anime had a very short crop of blonde hair, similarly to the Armored Titan of Reiner Braun who was the last user of the Armored Titan.
Jaw Titan[]
Just like all the other upcoming Jaw Titans. The Jaw Titan of the first wielder was smaller than the other Titans, but had large limbs making it capable of fast movements, along with having large and sharp fingernails. The mouth and jaw’s mandible were large, making it capable of high biting strength and its namesake jaw, caused its entire face to have the form of a skull. With the cheekbones harshly protruding from its skin, while having deep eye socket and lacking nose. It also had long wavy dark blonde hair.
Cart Titan[]
Although the Beast Titan was supposed to have a clear animal form compared to other Titans. The first Cart Titan also seemed to have an animal inspiration, being that of a horse. This was fitting for its features, as the Cart Titan walked on four legs and had an elongated face with a large mouth that had numerous flat teeth in it. The Titan was the smallest of the other eight but had a fairly muscular build. Its skin was more tanned and had more of a snout then a nose. It had a crop of brown hair that waved to the back of its head.
Personalities[]
Despite having never once seen speaking, its assumed that they had a similar mindset to their grandfather King Fritz. Having a brutal need to dominate the world by using their powers for hegemonic purposes. They were noticeably cruel people as they attacked a crowd of innocent civilians who couldn’t defend themselves, displaying their viciousness. Although its unknown if they were like out of their free will, or if they were indoctrinated from birth by their mothers, who were also manipulated by their father, the first king of Eldia. They would nonetheless act as hegemonic tyrants who sought to expand their will over the continent, and eventually bring out these traits in their own children, all to fulfill the first King’s desire.

Background[]
When the first ruler of the Eldian Empire was on his deathbed, King Fritz. He commanded his three daughters who he had with the first Titan user Ymir Fritz, to keep the blood of Ymir going by having children of their own. He told them that once they passed away their children had to eat their spines to continue the Titan lineage. All so his Titans could continue to take over more of the earth and his wish to dominate the world could be succeeded post-death. After he passed away, his daughters fulfilled their fathers wish. The three of them birthing children of their own who would eventually become the first Nine Titans. They were probably treated very well in the ancient Eldian society, being seen as the noble and virtuous grandchildren of King Fritz and Ymir. This was seen when one of these children was born, everyone revered the baby as if it were a holy figure.
They were also presumably raised in a way to become the next heir of the Titan powers, to continue their grandfathers will. Their mothers likely died when they were still rather young, because of the Titan curse making them die thirteen years after getting their powers. They would nonetheless resume with their grandfather’s wish. After eating the spines of their mothers, these nine people would be capable of all obtaining a piece of their mothers powers, who each of the three were capable of acquiring a fragment of their mother Ymir’s power. The nine would each gain powers, causing the Titan lineage to go from, one, to three, to nine, which stayed this way forever.
After becoming the new Titans for Eldia, whilst also being the first user of each respected Titan. Namely the Founder, Attack, Colossal, Female, Beast, War Hammer, Armored, Jaw and Cart Titan.
Eight of these Titans except for the Founder would eventually destroy the remainders of the Marleyan Empire, presumably without much opposition as how powerful their powers were compared to the lack of technology around that time. They would also be exceptionally brutal in their conquest, having no problem with mass killing innocent civilians to maliciously expand their empire. After the Marleyan territory was successfully subjugated, they made the Eldian Empire become the new power on the continent, much to the horror of all other civilizations that resided there. Now being controlled by the Eldians with no chance to fight back. The Original Nine would eventually get numerous children of themselves, and after they died from the Cuse of Ymir, their children obtained their powers and would set their focus on increasing the Eldian Empire’s influence on the rest of the world.
The dreadful actions committed by the Original Nine would be remembered for millennia to come by the descendants of the oppressed victims from Eldia’s tyrannical rule over the continent.
In the year 817 over a thousand years later, a young Eldian boy named Grisha Yeager is taught by his father the actions that the Original Nine committed, and the dire consequences that it had on the rest of the world.
War for Paradis Arc[]
When Eren Yeager is attacked by his comrades, Ymir who teamed up with him uses her powers to reconstruct numerous ancient Titan throughout history to fight them off, a few of the Original Nine are seen, such as the first War Hammer that was seen attacking Reiner Braun. And the first Jaw Titan that attacked and sliced off Pieck’s arm, while also nearly killing both her and Jean Kirstein, but was stopped at the last second by Marcel Galliard’s Jaw Titan.
Trivia[]
- Despite having only been seen in one panel of the manga and one shot of the anime, they are still very important post-mortem figures in the Attack on Titan universe, having destroyed the entirety of Marley and helped their grandfather King Fritz to posthumously fulfil his goal.
- When they were seen, only Eight of the Nine Titans are present. As the Founding Titan, wasn’t among them. This was presumably because the main power of the Founder was its influence on the Subjects of Ymir, but at that time there were only nine of them, meaning that they hadn’t figured out that the Founder could create Pure Titans yet. It’s also because the Founding Titan acted as the King for the Eldian Empire, meaning that it was busy with governmental responsibilities, instead of warmongering.
