~ The Overlord to Lloyd Garmadon in the Ultimate Battle. |
“ | Fools! All your existence, you have been powered by a lie… that the good guys always win. Sadly, they don't. I have the power now. Technology has made me infinite! The Golden Ninja is mine! | „ |
~ The Overlord to the ninja in the Digiverse. |
“ | Did you truly think you could defeat me? Your powers were a gift from me. It was I who possessed the serpent that bit your hand! It was I who corrupted the Great Devourer and set it against you! [...] All that has happened was by my design!! The Devourer was merely a pawn... set in motion by me to provide a worthy vessel for my return! Now, at last, I have such a vessel! I am COMPLETE!! Thus does Garmadon, son of the First Spinjitzu Master, meet his end! | „ |
~ The Overlord revealing to Lloyd, Garmadon, and Harumi that he was responsible for the Great Devourer’s corruption. |
The Overlord, also known as the Dark Lord among other aliases, is the overarching antagonist of LEGO Ninjago: Masters of Spinjitzu.
He is an obscure, primordial spirit who is the core source of evil and embodiment of darkness in Ninjago. He was willing to destroy the balance between light and darkness so he can bring Ninjago "peace" under the darkness. He is also the corruptor of the Great Devourer, making himself responsible for Lord Garmadon and Harumi's descents into villainy. He also serves as the archenemy of both the First Spinjitzu Master and Lloyd Garmadon, as well as one of the Ninja's most dangerous enemies.
He was voiced by Scott McNeil, who also voiced Clouse, General Arcturus and Nadakhan in the same series, Twin Masters in Hero: 108, Tall Boy in Riverdale, Taigokumaru and Panther Demon leader in InuYasha, Voltar in League of Super Evil, and Blokk in Shadow Raiders.
Biography[]
Origins[]
“ | So you know about how the First Spinjitzu Master created Ninjago, but what if I were to tell you, in order for there to be light, there must be shadow. And within shadow, there is darkness. The blackest of darkness that existed from the very beginning, an evil spirit called the Overlord. | „ |
~ Misako describing the Overlord. |
Before the creation of Ninjago, two warring species existed: the Dragon (which had the power to create) and the Oni (which had the power to destroy). One day, a child was born with both powers, and he grew up to become the First Spinjitzu Master, who created the island of Ninjago. Underneath the shadows of the new island, a new being of darkness was born, known as the Overlord. Serving as the embodiment of darkness, the Overlord challenged the First Spinjitzu Master for control over Ninjago.
After a lengthy battle, which ended in a stalemate, the Overlord created the Stone army to tip the balance in his favor. This forced the First Spinjitzu Master to split the island into two parts (the first half being Ninjago and the second being the Island of Darkness), and in doing so, he defeated the Stone Army and trapped the Overlord on the Island of Darkness. Refusing to accept defeat, he corrupted (either telepathically in his spirit form or before his defeat) a small garden snake, turning it evil and sets the snake, later called the Great Devourer, to bite a young Garmadon (one of the sons of the First Spinjitzu Master). As time goes by, Garmadon becomes slowly corrupted by the Devourer's venom, turning him into an evil warlord who would want to turn Ninjago into his own evil image, effectively becoming the arch nemesis of his younger brother Sensei Wu and his band of Ninja, and the leader of Skulkin and the Serpentine.
Legacy of the Green Ninja[]
“ | The ultimate battle between good and evil has been foretold. And with your help, we will rule this world! | „ |
~ The Overlord to Garmadon. |
After the Serpentine abandoned Garmadon in the Island of Darkness, the Overlord met up with him and convinced him to join forces. Garmadon assumed command of the revived Stone Army and they constructed an ultimate weapon called the Garmatron to conquer Ninjago. At the coast of the Dark Island, Garmadon began firing Dark Matter at Ninjago, shifting the balance. The Overlord gladly gloats about how he is finally free and when Garmadon protests, he possesses him. He attempts to fire more dark shots, but the Ninja destroy the bullets and Lloyd confronts the Overlord.
Sadly, Lloyd is defeated with a broken leg and The Overlord, along with his Stone Army, travels to Ninjago City while leaving the Ninja stranded on the island.
Arriving in Ninjago City, The Overlord causes mass corruption and spread darkness and finally returns to his original form of a Dragon. The Garmatron then transforms into a giant fortress and the Stone Army guards it. When the ninja returned, his army attacked and nearly killed them, but Dareth finds the abandoned Helmets of Shadows and assumes control of the army. When the rest of the Ninja try to help Lloyd to the top, one by one they fell to the Overlord's corrupting Dark Matter. Lloyd arrives at the top and confronts The Overlord. When Lloyd conjures a green shield, the Overlord breathes fire onto him, but Lloyd unlocks his full potential, becoming the Ultimate Spinjitzu Master.
The Overlord started to fight, but Lloyd proved to be too powerful. Enraged, the Overlord surrounded Ninjago in a massive sphere of darkness and ate Lloyd. However, to his shock, Lloyd unleashes his full power-leading to the Overlord howling in fury as he is defeated, removing the taint of darkness from Ninjago City, the corrupted heroes, and even Lord Garmadon.
Rebooted[]
“ | Soon you will be utterly powerless. And I will escape this digital prison and become whole, and nothing will stop me from becoming the Golden Master! | „ |
~ The Overlord to the ninja |
Sometime later, the Overlord once again returned in the form of a digital virus. With the help of former Anacondrai general Pythor P. Chumsworth and an army of robotic ninjas known as Nindroids, the Overlord concocts a new plot for conquest by obtaining Lloyd's powers for himself in order for him to become the all-powerful Golden Master, a being that possessed the powers of The First Spinjitzu Master. When that plan was partially foiled by the Ninja, he discovered that the Golden Weapons are in outer space inside a comet ever since Garmadon lost his Mega Weapon. So, the Overlord initiated a project called Project Arcturus, which involves sending Nindroids into outer space on a rocket. Despite the ninja's efforts, the Nindroids were able to deliver the Weapons back to Ninjago and have them melt down to create a new powerful golden armor.
With the new powerful armor, the Overlord then became the Golden Master. As such, Garmadon and Wu formed a plan to shoot a shrinking pill into the Overlord's mouth so that the Ninja can take him down, but this was foiled when Pythor ends up swallowing the pill, shrinking himself in the process. Because of this blunder, this allowed the Overlord to trap Wu, Garmadon, and the ninja, determined to kill them all with his powers. In a final effort to defeat the Overlord, Zane sacrificed himself by using his powers to destroy the Overlord's form before rebuilding himself from the Digiverse.
However, unbeknownst to everyone in Ninjago, the Overlord survived his defeat and would spend the next few years in hiding, witnessing the major events of Ninjago's history in the dark waiting for the right time to enact his revenge.
Decoded[]
“ | You will never defeat me. You cannot even protect this cave from my reach. What hope do you have of saving Ninjago? | „ |
~ The Overlord to the ninja |
During this time, the Digital Overlord had hacked its way into Zane and his memory, creating a strange structure named the "Ninjigma". After the ninja complete the last Ninjigma puzzle, resulting in the Overlord being released. Although, the ninja were able to defeat the virus and have Zane reboot.
Crystalized[]
“ | Overlord: I was trying to destroy the ninja, but that would only unleash their powers, which, in time, might find new champions. But if I corrupted them instead, then the very powers of creation would be mine! Harumi: Then I must find a way to bring the ninja to you. Overlord: No. I will handle that. Harumi: How? Overlord: I will strike at their precious city. They will do what they always do. They will come to me. |
„ |
~ The Overlord and Harumi. |
After Harumi's death at the hands of the Colossus, and while the Ninja fought the beast while Wu and Lloyd fought Garmadon, the Overlord, taking up the alias as the Crystal King, met up with her and offered her to be his second in command. When Harumi initially refused, the Overlord decided to leave her in the Departed Realm. However, Harumi changes her mind and agrees to his offer, much to the Overlord's pleasure, who revives. After Harumi escapes the building's rubble with a crystal in her hand, the Overlord (from the crystal) tells her to bring him to the Oni Temple where Harumi revealed her true colors to Lloyd.
Once they arrive, the Overlord tells Harumi to place the crystal onto the Oni Mask of Hatred's former pedestal. Once she did, the entire temple transformed into the Crystal temple, the crystal in the pedestal grew to a large size and the Overlord revealed his true identity. At first, Harumi is horrified about her resurrector, saying that if she served him, he would destroy Ninjago. However, the Overlord revealed that he no longer wants to destroy Ninjago; he actually wants to destroy the balance by corrupting the powers of creation so that Ninjago can finally find peace in the Dark. Harumi swore her allegiance to him with the order to build an army for the Overlord: out of Vengestone, a material used to nullify elemental powers and one of the ninja's main weaknesses.
To that end, Harumi spends the next few months trying to find Vengestone before learning that there are enough resources of Vengestone in Shintaro Mountain. As such, Harumi formed a deal with King Vangelis to have the Munce and Geckles mine it for them and the Overlord. However, the mining operation was foiled by the ninja, and Vangelis ends up being arrested. Despite the setback, Harumi was able to buy off more Vengestone from smugglers, giving her enough resources to build a Vengestone army for the Overlord. A year following the death of Kalmaar, the Overlord would order Harumi to recruit surviving adversaries of the ninja for his new council. Harumi would then contact previous enemies of the Ninja (such as Pythor, Aspheera, Vangelis, Mister F, and the Mechanic) and bring them to the Crystal King's temple.
As part of the Overlord's plan, Pythor, Aspheera, Vangelis, and the Mechanic successfully steal the Golden Weapons before transforming them into Weapons of Destruction in order for the Overlord to gain a physical form. Using his new powers, the Overlord was able to levitate the Oni temple over Ninjago City and sending his Vengestone armies against the populace. This forced the Ninja to bring in their friends, their allies (including the Merlopians, the Keepers and the Shintarians), and their former enemies (including Garmadon, Ronin, Unagami, the Red Visors, the Whack Rats, Ultra Violet, Killow, Fugi-Dove and the Serpentine) to help fight back against the Overlord and his Vengestone armies. While the Ninja were able to defeat Pythor, Aspheera, Mister F, Vangelis and the Mechanic in their tracks and reclaim the Golden Weapons, Garmadon and Lloyd engage into a battle against the Overlord, who revealed that he was responsible for creating and sending the Great Devourer against them, which drove Harumi to turn against him (as her family was killed by the Great Devourer).
Despite the combined efforts of Garmadon, Lloyd and Harumi, the Overlord defeats them all before severely injuring Garmadon and sending Lloyd to fall to his apparent death, much to Harumi's distraught. The Overlord then proceeds to use the temple to successfully petrify all life in Ninjago, including the ninja and their allies. Believing to having succeeded in taking over Ninjago and plunging it into darkness, the Overlord attempts to kill Harumi for her betrayal. However, before the ninja were petrified, they manage to combine the Golden weapons, causing them to form into a golden four-headed dragon and save Lloyd and Harumi from their doom. Lloyd then leads the dragon to attack the Overlord, and with their combined powers, they manage to freeze him before shattering him to pieces, causing him to go back into hibernation.
Appearance[]
During Misako's telling of Ninjago's origins (seen in "The Stone Army"), the Overlord was depicted as a towering mass of dark fire with a vaguely humanoid shape.
When Lord Garmadon arrived on the Island of Darkness, the Overlord appeared as an orb of purple energy with a pale-yellow core. The orb pulsed as the Overlord spoke.
After possessing Lord Garmadon's body, the Overlord began his transformation to his original form, which started out as a larger, more demonic version of Garmadon. Notable differences included longer limbs ending in clawed hands and feet, short spikes erupting from his shoulders and back, glowing purple eyes, and elongated reptilian jaws filled with long fangs. In "Rise of the Spinjitzu Master," the Overlord completed his transformation, which has a monstrous black dragon with four long feelers on its face, massive, tattered black wings instead of arms, and a broad, toothy mouth.
"Enter the Digiverse" saw the Overlord appear in two different forms. The first was that of a shadowy armored humanoid, as he was in the process of transforming into the legendary Golden Master. When confronting the ninja inside the Digiverse, he took a shadowy humanoid form of great size made out of purple ash that possessed a number of tentacles.
In "Codename: Arcturus," the Overlord had become a pulsing amorphous, pink, white, and red blob with glowing red eyes due to his interrupted transformation into the Golden Master.
In "The Void," the Overlord's being had stabilized into that of a completely blank, black armored humanoid with glowing red eyes with purple mist surrounding him as his body was nearly complete.
Lastly, in "The Titanium Ninja," the Overlord assumed his semi-golden master form as a black and purple humanoid figure with a face akin to the mid-metamorphosis form he assumed in Garmadon's body with a pair of glowing red eyes. Furthermore, he was adorned with golden skeletal armor and a black helmet with purple energy trailing behind him from his back that appeared similar to a cape. After completing his Golden Master form by fusing with his mech, he experienced a growth spurt of enormous proportions with his armor gaining a more ornate appearance, his torso and legs had completely disintegrated with vibrant purple, flickering flames taking their place with mechanical black and gold machinery attached to him to take the place of his legs, which Zane would ultimately use to hold himself in place when the master of ice presumably died.
The remnant of the Overlord's digital code from "Decoded" has visual traits from both forms of the virus' full version. Being purple and filling a screen, it has the general figure of the Overlord's eyes but they are smaller and can turn as if they were on the head. They also differ from both the original and the Kraken by appearing more yellow than red.
After gaining a physical form in "Darkness Within" as his new form as the Crystal King, the Overlord has a black face with two large gray-white horns, pink glowing eyes, sharp teeth, and yellow accents on his face. His horns, bare a strong resemblance to the horns on the Oni Mask of Deception. There also appear to be several tusks from the underside of his face. He is also seen having a tall metal neck from underneath his face. His torso closely resembles that of his Golden Master form, though with a few notable differences; his Golden Master symbol is present but now glows pink. There are also glowing pink parts in between the armor, and there are two crystals of the same color on the upper portion of his torso, with the addition of gray shoulder pads. He gains four golden arms which end in gray hands, similar to when he possessed Garmadon, though he lacks the claws and limbs, having actual LEGO arms and hands, in which goes for the same case for his legs, which are dark gray with yellow and purple accents and patterning.
His ultimate form, the Overlord resembles a centaur-like creature, he now has two arms with five clawed fingers, four legs and a tail resembling one of a dragon, and has two crystalized wings.
Personality[]
“ | How could I be such a fool?! The Overlord doesn't want to destroy you, he wants to corrupt the powers of Creation!! | „ |
~ Wu realizing the Overlord's true endgame during the final battle. |
The Overlord serves as the ultimate epitome of evil in Ninjago, as he has shown to be serious and cunning, though he is often heavily reliant on metaphysical concepts and prophesied events (destiny, the balance, the final battle, the prophecy of the Golden Master, etc.). As is to be expected from the embodiment of darkness, the Overlord is very cruel and devoid of empathy and seems to enjoy inflicting pain and despair upon his enemies. In fact, he has been known to go out of his way to do so, taunting his victims in hopeless situations; proving himself to be arrogant in nature.
The Overlord is also quite intelligent as he exploits any opportunity to gain power without raising suspicions. One example is that he slyly tricked Lord Garmadon into activating the Celestial Clock in order to gain control of the Stone Army and mine for Dark Matter that can be used to upset the balance in Ninjago so that the Overlord can possess Garmadon and take Ninjago City for himself. Following his first defeat, the Overlord was able to reformat himself into a virus in order to create the Nindroid Army and nab the powers of the Golden Weapons (with the help from Pythor) to become the Golden Master. After reviving Harumi, the Overlord gets her to smuggle in Vengstone in order to create an army that would easily negate the Ninja's powers, and hire several of the Ninja's wanted enemies (the Mechanic, Aspheera, Mister F, Pythor and King Vangelis) to serve as his council in order to do his dirty work. Despite their past clashes, the Overlord was also willing to offer Lloyd a place by his side, displaying how he was willing to put aside old feelings of hatred if he felt it might gain him more power and he even showed a slight admiration for Lloyd's constant shows of bravery.
Given to the Overlord spreading his belief to others (especially Harumi and his council members) that the balance is a problem that must be eliminated and his plans to bring peace in the dark, it shows that the Overlord is not above manipulating, berating or hurting others for his own gain, even when they have just perished. This was shown when he berated Harumi for her feelings toward Lloyd after the latter escaped from Overlord's captivity; even when Harumi tried to assure that she could try to make Lloyd give in to the darkness, the Overlord refuses her pleas and demanded that she kill Lloyd as he already made his decision not to submit to the dark side. Also, despite entrusting his fellow council members with enough resources to lead his armies, the Overlord doesn't tolerate any failure that they have committed. This was shown when he voiced his utter rage towards Pythor, Aspheera, Vangelis and the Mechanic for their utter failure to capture the Ninja and attempted to execute them with his powers, though this was avoided when Harumi and Mister F informed the Overlord of the Ninja's actual location from a radio transmission.
Upon enacting his plot to crystallize all life in Ninjago, the Overlord becomes more callous as he viciously unleashes his armies (both the Crystal Warriors and the Dragonides) to attack Ninjago and crystallize countless innocent lives; he even taunts Wu about the fact that the First Spinjitzu Master only delayed the inevitable by splitting the island of Ninjago into two to maintain the balance. Even during his final battle against Garmadon and Lloyd, the Overlord shows no hesitation to painfully torture them for his amusement; he even spitefully admitted that he was the one who corrupted the Great Devourer that turned Garmadon evil in the first place; which drove an enraged Harumi to turn against him (as her family was murdered by the Great Devourer).
Upon severely injuring Garmadon and sending Lloyd to his apparent doom, the Overlord becomes more sadistic as he made good on his intent to crystallize all remaining life in Ninjago; even when his council members and their armies end up being defeated by the ninja and their allies, the Overlord showed no concern as he successfully crystallized the ninja and their allies in retaliation, implying that he was only using the council members and their armies as mere pawns to satisfy his own need for power and revenge. He even attempts to execute a moping Harumi out of spite after completing his plot to crystallize all life in Ninjago.
However, the Overlord's arrogance has proven to be his downfall, as he didn't anticipate the fact that the Ninja would sacrifice the Golden Weapons before they were petrified, which allowed the powers to save Lloyd and give him another chance to finally defeat the Overlord in his tracks, nor did he seem to care of how revealing his role in killing Harumi's family would prompt her to desert him. All in all, the Overlord has proven to be an irredeemable monster whose actions were taken seriously as he has dedicated his existence to throwing Ninjago and all of existence into darkness for all eternity.
Powers and Abilities[]
“ | The Overlord cannot be destroyed. Not really. He is the embodiment of evil. He's fed by anger, hatred, and conflict. As they build up over time, he gains his strength, and ultimately takes form again. | „ |
~ Wu explaining the Overlord's immortality. |
- Floating: In his spirit and Crystal King form, he was able to float freely, allowing him to travel on the Island of Darkness and the Crystal Island.
- Resurrection: The Overlord has the ability to resurrect anyone from the Departed Realm (whether he can resurrect newly departed or ones that have been departed for a while or a long time as well is currently unknown). He used this power to resurrect Harumi after she vowed to serve him.
- Enhanced Perception: He also appeared to have some form of enhanced perception, as he immediately sensed the ninja's arrival on the Island of Darkness. The Overlord also has some kind of perception of living beings (it is not known whether it was thermal vision or the Overlord sees the souls of beings themselves).
- Enhanced Strength and Durability: After using Lord Garmadon's body to retake a physical form, the Overlord gained enhanced physical strength and high durability, easily able to take Lloyd's attacks and overpower him.
- Immortality: The Overlord, who is the source of all darkness, represents the malevolent part of the Balance, due to which he (as an entity) can never be destroyed. The Overlord's truest being exists in an unknown void, which was shown in "A Sinister Shadow", during his dormant state and for a full return to the physical world and mortal plane of existence he needs a physical form.
- Regeneration: The Overlord's spirit showed the ability to recover after its destruction in "Rise of the Spinjitzu Master" by Lloyd's Golden Power.
- Manifestation: The Overlord uses avatars in order to interact in the physical world. Probably, the Overlord does not have its own physical form and exists solely as a concept/spirit of Evil.
- Possession: As shown by the example of Lord Garmadon and the Borg Industries systems, the Overlord is able to possess objects, making them their hosts. Upon possessing Garmadon, the Overlord caused a mutation in his body, turning him into a dragon so the Overlord could regain his original form.
Powers[]
- Darkness: The Overlord possesses the elemental essence of Darkness. Whilst in control of Lord Garmadon's body, he gained the ability to release dark energy from his hands. He usually fired this energy as offensive beam attacks, which could overpower Lloyd's energy beams and break his leg, but he could also use it to fly; by releasing small "jets" of energy from his lower pair of hands, the Overlord was able to hover in the air or propel himself at varying speeds.
- Darkness Materialization: The Overlord can give life to inanimate statues. He uses this ability to give life to the Stone Army and the Crystal Warriors, in which the latter was created by having parts of them replaced with infectious crystals.
- Dragon form: Over time, the Overlord can turn into his original dragon form, from which his strength and durability increased even further, due to his massive size. He could fly with the use of his large wings, breath dark fire, and spit masses of pure darkness that corrupt anything they hit (much like the Garmatron's Dark Matter shots). At the end of his battle with Lloyd, he displayed the ability to transform himself into a large orb of shadows that engulfs his foe—within the orb, his head grew to many times its original size, although it is unclear if this was purely an ability, or if his host body kept him physical. Even before his transformation as the Golden Master, he was the most powerful enemy the ninja ever met.
- Crystal Creation: As the Crystal King, the Overlord can create his own crystals that can bestow anyone or anything his powers, or infect them turning victims into Crystal Zombies.
- Strength Bestowal: Upon giving Harumi a crystal, he allowed her to move massive hunks of debris to escape a collapsed building following her resurrection.
- Telekinesis: As the Crystal King, the Overlord can use his crystals to levitate and move objects of great size (in this case the Crystal Island by using the central crystal) at will. This is similar to when he used Golden Power as the Golden Master to move all of Ninjago City and turn it into a fortress.
- Crystallization: As the Crystal King, the Overlord can use his powers to crystallize terrain, people, objects, and even entire cities. Once Crystallized, said objects, people or terrain are under his full control, and whatever powers they possessed are also under his command as well. He wished to use this power to crystallize the ninja, and thereby gain dominion over the Elements of Creation.
- Shapeshifting: As the Crystal King, the Overlord can change shape and size at will, as shown when he shifted his form to be that of a giant centaur-like creature.
- Golden Power (formerly): As the legendary "Golden Master," his powers grew to be equivalent to, if not greater than the First Spinjitzu Master. Once he gained this power, he used it to turn Ninjago City into a colossal fortress, gathering the largest buildings into a near impenetrable wall. Soon after this, he tried to shoot Kai with a beam of Golden Energy. He was also able to use Golden Energy to levitate cars in mid-air, and even threw one at Nya. Eventually, as the Ninja were traveling down a street in their vehicles, the Overlord shot them with a massive ball of golden energy, sending them all huddling further down the street. After this, he used his newfound powers to perform Spinjitzu for the first time, becoming a massive golden tornado. When the ninja got Stone Armor, the Overlord, like the Golden Master, shaped roof tiles into a massive arm and hand in an attempt to crush the ninja; despite this, he failed to crush them. At the end of the episode, he was powerful enough to ensnare the ninja with beams of Golden Power. Though, this shouldn't have been possible as the stone armor the ninja were wearing was supposed to be resistant to the might of Golden Power. However, the Overlord had grown in strength and power tremendously by that point in the episode, which may have been the reason why he was able to overpower the stone armor.

Overlord: I am the Crystal King. And I have the power to restore you, if you will serve me. Harumi: But I don't even know who you are. Crystal King: A shame..... I expected courage from you, Harumi, not reservation, not fear. But it seems I was wrong. Enjoy eternity in the Departed Realm. Harumi: No, wait! I'll do it. I'll serve you. Crystal King: Very well. I was trying to destroy the ninja, but that would only unleash their powers, which, in time, might find new champions. But if I corrupted them instead, then the very powers of creation would be mine! Trivia[]
- According to Tommy Andreasen on Twitter, the Overlord could potentially be the most powerful antagonist in the series, if he had the right vessel. It is unknown if this vessel was any of his previous forms, as it is open to interpretation if he is the most powerful villain the ninja has faced.
- Although he is extremely ancient, he is not the first evil to come into existence in the realms; the Oni and Wojira are, though he is Ninjago's original evil.
- The Overlord views the environment with thermal vision in his "spirit" form.
- In the show, the Ninja mistook his titles twice for characters they were already familiar with: Dark Lord (they thought it referred to Garmadon) and Golden Master (the Ninja mistook Lloyd for being the Golden Master).
- The Overlord is the manifestation of darkness and evil, but he needs a body to use his powers. For instance, he was only able to use Darkness while he possessed Garmadon. When his transformation into his original form was complete he could use his full powers. In his Golden Master form, he had both Darkness and the Golden Power.
- In the non-canon Ninjago comic, Tomb of the Fangpyre, it was told that the Great Devourer started off as a harmless garden snake that was infected by darkness (possibly the essence of the Overlord himself) before she bit Garmadon that turned him evil. This may imply that the Overlord is responsible for creating the Great Devourer and turning Lord Garmadon evil in the first place; this theory was supported in the Season 2 finale "Rise of the Spinjitzu Master", when Garmadon was finally freed of the Devourer's venom following the Overlord's first defeat.
- In "Dragon Form", the penultimate episode of Season 15: Crystalized, this theory is officially confirmed as the Overlord tells Garmadon and Lloyd that he was the one who created the serpent and mutated it.
- There were several hints that proved that the Overlord was involved in the Devourer:
- The Devourer's eyes were Pink like a victim of Dark Matter.
- It's Venom can turn people evil, just like Dark Matter.
- The Stone Army was revived by the Devourer's Venom, which contained Darkness.
- According to co-creator Tommy Andreasen, although his statement shouldn't be taken as canon, he theorized that the Overlord was the Oni side of the First Spinjitzu Master given form that the latter tried to get rid of, but was unsuccessful in doing so.
- If true, that means that the Stone Wars (the battle between the Overlord and the First Spinjitzu Master) never happened.
