You've come- back- But the fire- Are you really here? Or is He-? Oh...is he playing tricks again?
~ The Paintress to Expedition 33, upon their confrontation.
No, no, you are HIS creations, not mine. You will not take this Canvas from me!
~ The Paintress as she prepares to fight.

The Paintress is the secondary antagonist of the 2025 French RPG, Clair Obscur: Expedition 33. She is the mysterious figure that sits at foot of the Monolith, and paints a number every year believed to mark death for those whose age is above that number.

It is later revealed that she is Aline Dessendre, the matriarch of the Dessendre family, a family of powerful magic users known as Painters who create livings worlds called Canvases inside works of art. After losing her son Verso to a fire, Aline entered his Canvas and created doppelgangers in the image of her husband, son, and her daughters Clea and Alicia.

Abandoning her real family for her fake one, Aline's actions resulted in her real husband deciding to destroy the Canvas' inhabitants and forcibly remove her. In response, Aline imprisoned her husband at the bottom of the Monolith and painted the numbers as a warning to the people of the Canvas that her husband was initiating the annual Gommage to slowly drain Aline of her powers.

She is voiced by Sandrine Henry in French and by Tracy Wiles in English, who also voiced Joanna Tarar Calendula in Metaphor: ReFantazio.

Appearance[]

In her Paintress form, Aline takes the form of an emaciated, stone woman, with a hole where her face should be, and long white hair that floats.

In her true human form, Aline appears as a middle-aged fair-skinned woman, roughly around her early-to-mid fifties, with frizzled reddish-brown hair and dressed in a white formal shirt and black dress.

Personality[]

The Paintress is initially believed by the people of Lumiere to be the one responsible for causing the yearly Gommage, though for what reason remains unclear to them. When it's revealed who the Paintress actually is, her intentions become all the clearer.

In truth, the Paintress is Aline Dessendre, a grieving mother that is broken by the death of her first and only son, Verso. She clings onto the Canvas he created in his childhood, as it contains the last piece of his soul that remains on Earth and uses it to live in a world with her own recreation of him and the rest of her family, being very protective of it.

While her family as a whole were greatly affected by Verso's death, his death affected Aline the most, as her grief deluded her into believing his death was her daughter's fault, Alicia, making her painted self retain the scars from the fire she got caught in and leave her with no color. This in turn caused her to neglect both her family and her own well being, creating a conflict between her and her husband, Renoir, who desperately wants her to let go of Verso's Canvas and come back home.

Despite everything she had done to her husband in the Canvas during her state of grief, she still loves Renoir, and the two were able to reconcile and embrace each other at Verso's funeral. And though the painted version of Alicia is a hint that Aline hold a grudge against her due to Verso's death being caused by him rescuing her from the fire, she, nevertheless, cares deeply for her youngest daughter, enough that she expresses concern for her when she realizes she had ended up being pulled into the Canvas and tries to send her back home for her own safety. When Alicia eventually confronts her as Maelle, Aline is briefly touched by seeing her face having been healed and is able to talk again. While she initially believed she wasn't the real Alicia, she later tries to help her once she is defeated and in the battle against Renoir in Lumière by using her giantess form to defeat Sirène.
