Clever Arya! That fire, that singular determination... mine to wield. Behold, Leviathan! Your brother is here, somewhere, like all the other chosen. You alone will be its driving force. Get. In.
~ The Philanthropist revealing his monstrous creation to Arya.

The Philanthropist is the main antagonist of the MMO third-person shooter Warframe's Ascension Day animated short.

He's a renegade member of the Corpus who established his own hidden colony on Earth, an apparent paradise where rescued orphans would worship him as their savior, but which was secretly a front to acquire test subjects for his horrific experiments with the Infestation.

Appearance[]

Being a former member of the technocratic Corpus, the Philanthropist's clothing is reminiscent of their designs. He wears a long cloak with large, spherical shoulder pads and technology embedded into his helmet that allows him to activate various devices in his laboratory. He has a glowing blue arch that extends from one shoulder to the other, giving the image of a halo. The Philanthropist himself is very pale, likely due to spending most of his time in his laboratory, and his face is lined with tattoos or face paint like most Corpus.

After fusing with the Leviathan, the resulting mutations caused his head and upper body to swell up dramatically, making him look more deranged and feral compared to his previously refined appearance.

Personality[]

Unlike many Corpus, the Philanthropist does not show any signs of the typical obsession with money and possessions. His fascination instead lies with scientific progress, particularly in the field of biological warfare. Although the Corpus have banned research and trade with Infested biotechnology due to its unpredictability and the dangers of outbreaks, the Philanthropist's goal is the creation of powerful Infested organisms under his command, which is likely why he split off from the Corpus.

He may present himself as a kind and charitable man, but this is merely an act that hides a psychopathic thirst for power. The boons he gave to his flock only serve two purposes: to ensure blind obedience and to ensure they are strong and healthy for his experiments. The Philanthropist is also a coward at heart, initially wanting someone else to be the brain of his creation and only taking control himself when cornered.

The feeling of power that came with merging himself to the Leviathan eroded whatever sanity the Philanthropist had left, attacking Styanax with a feral bloodlust that caused him to stop paying attention to his surroundings, which ultimately cost him his life.

Background[]

WarframePhilantrhopistColony

The Philanthropist's colony on Earth.

Very little is known about the Philanthropist's background, only that he was once a scientist working for the Corpus before splitting off to found a colony of his own on the mostly abandoned Earth. Using his scientific knowledge, the Philanthropist ensured his community would have ever-more bountiful harvests and thus earned himself their gratitude and admiration, using their faith in his abilities to create an obedient cult that worships him. To grow his cult, the Philanthropist periodically ventured out into the Origin System to seek out orphans that he could raise, educate and mold to his will.

The Philanthropist rescues Arya and Darro.

Two young members of this community were a woman named Arya and her brother Darro. Children that reached adulthood were summoned to partake in the "Ascension Day" ritual, allowing them entry in the Philanthropist's promised eternal paradise. In truth, they were merely taken down into the depths of their mad messiah's laboratory and used to become part of his ultimate creation: The Leviathan, an Infested monstrosity that rivals the power of a Tenno warrior.

Darro became a Chosen just like many others before and after him, but his disappearance led his sister Arya to become suspicious of their supposed benefactor. She called the Tenno for help by carving the shape of a lotus into their crop fields, visible by satellite but not easily noticed on the ground. The shielded hero Styanax answered her call and gave her a device that would summon him to her location when her time to be Chosen came.

Ascension Day[]

A shrine to the Philanthropist's chosen, his victims.

And her time soon did arrive. To the triumphant drums of her people, Arya entered the sacred temple of the Philanthropist, who greeted her and immediately decended the platform they were on down to his lab. He assured her that all the Chosen before her played their part in his vision, but Arya called him out as a liar and demanded to see her brother. The lights in his laboratory turned on and Arya was stunned after beholding the Leviathan behind him, while the Philanthropist commended Arya for her cleverness. He explained that her brother was somewhere inside the Leviathan with the other Chosen and that her purpose is to become its head, its driving force that would allow him to command his new weapon.

"To think I almost wasted this gift on you!"

But when he coldly ordered her to enter the Leviathan, Arya refused and summoned Styanax with her transponder, who broke through the ceiling and into the lab. The Philanthropist was caught off-guard, but simply called the Warframe a relic in the face of his new creation, seeing no other option than to take control of the Leviathan himself. Styanax did not react fast enough to stop the Philanthropist from doing so and engaged the abomination in battle, the mad scientist exclaiming that he's glad he didn't waste such power on Arya.

The Leviathan's hulking strength and robust form made it an evenly matched opponent for the Tenno, who was able to avoid most of its strikes due to his superior agility and speed. While the two battled, Arya found the body of her brother sticking out of the creature's back. She called out her brother's name, hoping that he's still somewhere inside that mass, with one desperate, anguished cry snapping Darro back into consciousness. Just as the Philanthropist managed to gain the upper hand over his opponent, Darro was able to assert enough control over himself to shift his body to the front of the Leviathan and put his would-be killer into a choke hold.

The Philantrophist's victims rebel against him.

This one act of defiance made Styanax realize that the minds of the Philanthropist's victims could still help them, using his abilities to give them back their freedom of will. As expected, the bodies of the Leviathan rebelled against the Philanthropist, immobilizing him as they tore at his face. This gave Styanax more than enough time to prepare one final attack that would put an end to his reign. As the Philanthropist looked up in terror at his impending doom, Darro gave one last thankful smile down at his sister. With one last strike, the Leviathan and its creator were obliterated and his victims put to rest.

Back on the surface, Arya and Styanax revealed the Philanthropist's treachery to the rest of the colony. Arya took charge of the cult and turned it into the community that it appeared to be, turning their messiah's lies into their own truth. She wanted to give the transponder back to Styanax, but he let her keep it in case they ever need his aid again. The colony remains secluded and its location confidential, but it is safe from the civil war that rages in the Origin System.
