The Plague is a minor antagonist in the indie puzzle adventure game Figment by Bedtime Digital Games. The Plague is a Nightmare, one of many evil, phobia-based beings who terrorizes the Mind, the world inside a young man's mind. He represents the fear of disease.
The Plague was voiced by Niels H∅jgaard S∅rensen, who was also the game's composer, as well as one of its story directors and level designers.
Biography[]
The Plague entered the Mind, the world inside a young man's mind, while the man was recovering in the hospital after a terrible car accident. The man's trauma allowed him to be overcome by three Nightmares: The Plague, the Spider Queen and The Fear of Loss.
The Plague quickly set off to take over Freedom Isles, the part of the Mind that focuses on creativity. His goal was to either make the Mind ill, give him the fear of illness, or both. He filled the place with toxic gas clouds. When the heroes, Dusty and Piper, arrived to stop him, the Plague ambushed them and threw vials of noxious gas at them while singing the first snippet of his song before leaving.
Dusty and Piper followed the Plague through Freedom Isles, while he continued to fight back with his gas clouds, gas vials, and his minions, the Plague Rats.
Dusty and Piper finally cornered him, forcing him to fight them one last time. This time, Dusty activated a device to dump water on the Plague, melting him and washing him away, thus cleaning up Freedom Isles.
Appearance[]
The Plague is an impish, black monster. His face is a red plague doctor's mask. He has multiple hornlike protrusions with black and yellow stripes on his head. He has two mouths filled with sharp teeth on his torso. He has skinny limbs and a long, crooked tail.
Personality[]
Out of the three Nightmares that invade the Mind in Figment, the Plague is by far the most comedic. His strange, high-pitched voice, constant anger and annoyance, and association with toilet humor all make him a very quirky villain. Unlike the Fear of Loss, who runs from Dusty out of cowardice, it seems as if the Plague only runs away from Dusty because he finds Dusty annoying.
However, despite his humorous traits, he's still a sadistic being who has no issue with causing terror and destruction to the Mind.
Trivia[]
- The Plague's voice actor, Niels H∅jgaard S∅rensen, leads the band Stöj Snak, which is credited as the artist behind The Plague's Song. As a result, Stöj Snak is sometimes incorrectly credited as the Plague's voice, when it is actually a band and not a person.
- The Plague has caused some confusion among players due to a line in his song where he threatens to give Dusty a vaccine containing autism. The developers explained in a YouTube comment that the purpose of this line was to show that the Plague likes spreading irrational health fears due to his nature as a Nightmare, and it does not reflect the developers' beliefs on vaccines in any way.
