“ | Let me tell you about the kind of world I live in. It is a world of miserable, bitter, ungrateful paramecium who lash out at you in a state of perpetual rage for not solving their problems fast enough. You do astonishing things for them a hundred times a day. You bring wonder to the lives of ordinary people. And in the end, you realize it's like doing magic tricks for a dog. | „ |

“ | I didn't mean for Jackson to happen! Is that how this works? I made one stupid mistake, and now I have nothing? Now no one will ever look up to me again? After all the good I have done? Stop it! Stop looking at me like I'm some bomb that could go off at any time! Is that what you think I am? Is that what you want me to be? IS IT? Fine. | „ |
~ The Plutonian angrily lashing out at several scientists, while spitefully condemning humanity via becoming a destructive villain. |
Daniel Hartigan, better known as The Plutonian or Tony, is the main antagonist of the comic book series Irredeemable and the overarching antagonist of its spin-off, Incorruptible.
Born from a probe created by a pair of god-like aliens known as the Eleos, the Plutonian arose to become a beloved superhero to feed his insatiable ego and desire for universal approval. However, after a series of events that came about due to his numerous mishaps, the Plutonian went on a murderous rampage across the world, embracing his most callous traits as he became a malevolent supervillain spitefully condemning humanity for ruining his reputation.
Personality[]
Despite once being Earth's most beloved hero and a paragon of virtue for all other superheroes, the Plutonian had displayed signs of mental instability and abusive behavior from an early age. By his own admission, the Plutonian was only a hero due to his insatiable hunger for love and praise. As such, any criticism towards him, no matter how minor, is more than enough to hurt his enormous ego and even send him into a spiteful rage, where he usually demands to be treated with respect for all the good he has done for the world.
His obsession with being loved comes from his childhood as an orphan, where he was repeatedly abandoned by his foster parents, as they were afraid of him because of his enormous powers. As time passed, Tony became increasingly frustrated with his adoptive families' fear of him, which would in turn result in him throwing violent tantrums that, ironically, would only serve to worsen their fears.
His traumatic childhood would end up starting a "pattern" that would repeat itself multiple times throughout his life, where he would "test" his loved ones to see if they truly loved him. If they continue to love him, he would then increasingly push the boundaries until they inevitably rejected him, allowing him to feel like the victim and that his fears of being abandoned and betrayed are justified.
As a consequence of his powers, the Plutonian lived in constant fear of making mistakes and, more specifically, of being held accountable for them. He always believed that even a minor mishap was more than enough to cause irreparable damage to others, the world at large, and most importantly, his reputation, a belief that is largely true considering how dangerous he is when he is not fully in control of himself or doesn't hold back. However, despite his obsession with being the "perfect hero", once he does a mistake and gets caught, his ego prevents him from apologizing and taking responsibility. Once he abandoned the path of heroism, he would also completely abandon this aspect of his personality and stop caring about the harm and damage caused by his actions, as he no longer cares about what others think of him.
After becoming a supervillain, Tony began to indulge his previously repressed sadistic and depraved desires. He killed, maimed and tortured countless people, while either rejoicing in their suffering or remaining completely apathetic, for very absurd and petty reasons or for no reason at all. Besides committing countless atrocities to satiate his bloodlust, the Plutonian also committed very bizarre actions to satisfy his sexual fantasies, particularly those involving his former teammate, Bette Noir, such as: forcing random couples to have sex with each other just because they happen to look similar to him and her, dedicating an entire room at his base for statues and paintings of her and forcing Encanta to dress up as Noir after kidnapping her.
The levels of hate-filled spite Tony is willing to go through when he feels like he's been wronged are downright ridiculous. The most extreme example being the time he destroyed the entire country of Singapore and forced his former teammate, Qubit, to handpick ten people to save out of the millions of lives living there, simply because a representative of Singapore lied to him out of fear.
Due to a childhood trauma involving one of his adoptive mothers killing herself with a .44, Tony hates the sound of the 44's hammer being cocked to the point of killing someone for making said sound. According to Qubit, despite his immense intelligence, Tony was never particularly curious.
Appearance[]
Despite not being human, Tony takes the form of a tall and muscular Caucasian man with a blonde buzzcut hairstyle. His initial suit is mostly white and red, with a long red cape and a symbol plastered across his chest, like most superheroes. After his descent into madness and villainy, Tony ditched his cape and switched to a color palette of mostly black and dark red.
In his civilian attire, Tony dyed his hair brown with a combover haircut and wore black rectangular glasses, a light green button t-shirt, green jeans, a belt, and blue loafers.
Powers and Abilities[]
Powers[]
- Superhuman Strength: The Plutonian is one of the strongest beings in the universe. His strength comes from his ability to temporarily reduce the mass of the solids that he makes contact with, allowing him to perform feats that are normally impossible with pure strength alone. Among his feats, the most impressive ones are: Pulling a submarine with a chain while underwater, sinking the entire nation of Singapore, creating a 9.8 earthquake during his fight against the Survivor and carrying, what was essentially, a small black hole in the palm of his hands (though he was hardly able to do so and the radiation emitted by it ended up being lethal to his body). To put the last feat into perspective, the smallest known black hole in real life, named "XTE J1650-500", weighs at least five solar masses, or five times the weight of our own sun.
- Superhuman Speed and Reflexes: According to the Plutonian himself, two miles feels no different from two inches. He can easily catch and deflect bullets with his hands, stop a bullet from hitting Bette Noir's head from point-blank range and create a trail of fire while sprinting.
- Flight: By telekinetically shifting his mass into the surrounding atmosphere, The Plutonian can levitate and propel himself at speeds faster than light. He can outraced live radio waves traveling at 186,000 mph (299,337 kph), reach a satellite in orbit in less than 1/3 of a second and fly from one solar system to another in less than an hour.
- Near Invulnerability: The only times The Plutonian is ever actually harmed is when someone is using magic or has nearly the same amount of strength as he does, which few do. His durability mostly comes from his ability to subconsciously alter the density of his own body, toughening his own skin and muscles and making them harder than diamonds. According to Bette Noir, to the average person, merely touching his skin can cause bruises and his hair can easily cut skin. He is unaffected by bullets, most energy projectiles and beams, eating rat poison, carbon monoxide poisoning, the heat of a live volcano, the pressure of the depths of the ocean, the vacuum of space and bathing in radiation. It took the full power of a graviton well, capable of generating half the pull of a black hole, for the Vespa to slow him down long enough for them to fabricate the necessary restraints to immobilize him. The Vespa later threw him into a star, where, despite suffering from the heat, he managed to emerge practically unharmed. During his fight against Modeus-possessed Bette Noir, Tony was able to take multiple hits from Modeus, despite each one of them containing all of the energy of a distant star, showcasing how much power is truly necessary to harm him directly.
- Heat Vision: By transferring kinetic energy to the air molecules striking his eyes, The Plutonian can release beams of superheated gas from his eyes. With these heat beams, he can: disintegrate flesh and bone, fry someone's brain to lobotomize them, seemingly melt any metal, liquefy sand, fission the nitrogen molecules in the air and make his symbol visible from outer space by carving it into North America. He also has a great level of control over his heat vision, being able to heat up a cup of coffee without causing any damage to the cup.
- Arctic Breath: Through his breath, The Plutonian can withdraw molecular motion from the air, reducing its temperature to sub-freezing. With this power, he can: put out fires, freeze an entire human being in the blink of an eye and then break their body into tiny fragments, quickly cool off melted sand to turn it into glass and atomize someone just by whistling hard.
- Enhanced Senses: The Plutonian has extremely accurate senses, possessing superhuman eyesight, hearing and smell. He is also capable of perceving electromagnetic radiation imperceptible to humans, feeling the free neutrons peppering his skin and detecting the exact position and momentum of every atom around him (a clear violation of the Uncertainty Principle).
- Enhanced Eyesight: Tony's vision is very advanced, able to discern distant objects with the same clarity as though they were in close proximity. He can throw projectiles from outer space and hit his desired target with millimeter precision. He can also see the electrons bouncing around inside someone's subcortex and interpret their "dance" to deduce their emotional state.
- Enhanced Hearing: The Plutonian has exceptional auditory perception, being able to hear someone whisper from the other side of planet Earth. He can discern sounds emanating from considerable distances, selectively drown out specific noises, hear through soundproof walls and even focus on a person's heartbeat to determine if they are lying. During a mission, while he was still a hero, he was able to hear an ultrasonic virus and determine its exact frequency so that his teammate, Qubit, could create a device to stop its attack.
- Enhanced Olfactory Sense: Besides his hearing and eyesight, The Plutonian also has a keen sense of smell. According to his ex-girlfriend, Alana, he could find her anywhere on Earth just by smelling her perfume. He can also smell a person's pheromones and decode what emotions they are feeling.
- X-Ray Vision: The Plutonian can mentally alter the atomic structure of the objects he's looking at, making them more permeable to electromagnetic radiation in general. That way, his brain can interpolate an 'image' based on the various E.M. wavelengths that he can perceive through his enhance senses, simulation the effects of x-ray vision. He can see through almost any wall or surface, with a few key exceptions.
- Low-level Reality Warping: The Plutonian's true power is the ability to psionically bend the laws of the universe to his whims and essentially be as strong as he thinks he is. All of his other powers are just offshoots of this central ability in some way. With this ability, he is theoretically capable of reversing entropy, altering probability, seeing through time and much more impressive feats. For most of his life, Tony only used this ability on a subconscious level and, as a consequence, was only able to tap into it's basic applications. However, after evolving into a higher being due to being around his birth parents, he gained more insight into his reality warping and became capable of giving himself new superpowers just by focusing on them. Some of the powers he has given himself are the following:
- Intangibility: By manipulating his atomic density, Tony can make himself intangible to avoid energy beams and projectiles.
- Inertia Negation: Tony can nullify fundamental forces, such as inertia. He can temporarily halt the moon's rotation just by touching it.
- Explosion Manipulation: By using quantum entanglement, The Plutonian can create atomic bomb-sized explosions with just a snap of his fingers.
- Metal Manipulation: The Plutonian can manipulate metallic matter. He can detect, in large quantities, the location of the elements needed for nuclear purification and telekinetically attract them to himself, separating them from the rest of the soil and eliminating the need to mine them by hand.
- Memory Manipulation: The Plutonian can make out the memories preserved in the brain's hippocampus. It is not as effective as outright mind reading or telepathy, as the memories are not in any real order and some of them can be blurry or fast-fading. He can also use this ability on people's corpses, presumably as long as their brain is intact.
Abilities[]
- High Intelligence: Although not nearly as brilliant on the levels of Qubit or Modeus, The Plutonian is still far more intelligent than the average human. As a child, he was able to read and memorize the contents of an entire library within just one day. He is also extremely perceptive, being able to figure out that Modeus was inhabiting Samsara's body simply by paying attention to the way he talked when compared to his sidekick.
- Manipulation Mastery: Tony is a master at manipulating others. He managed hide his flaws and maintain the image of a "perfect hero" for years, tricking most of the global population. Only two members of the Paradigm even suspected that he had a darker side beneath his heroic persona. After becoming a supervillain, he did a broadcast where he proceeded to recite the private information and names of several random people from across the globe, who he had heard with his superhuman hearing, with the purpose of inciting panic and paranoia worldwide.
- Master of Disguise: Tony is a master of disguise, managing to hold down an undercover job at a radio station for years. He was able to fool his former girlfriend Alana into believing that there was no way her co-worker was The Plutonian until he intentionally revealed himself. His disguise was also able to fool Max Damage and presumably all the other villains of his rogues gallery, potentially including the evil genius Modeus. Considering his reality-bending powers, it's possible that The Plutonian had subconsciously made it so that no one is able to recognize him while he's in disguise.
Weaknesses[]
- Magic: The Plutonian has a notable weakness towards magic. Modeus has managed to harm and even almost kill Tony with magic on numerous occasions. The Nahru Visna once made a magic candle that could temporarily remove Tony's powers, turning him into a normal human for as long as it burned. Bette Noir later fashioned a piece of the candle's wax into a bullet capable of killing him.
- Unaware Of His True Power: Throughout most of his life, The Plutonian was entirely unaware that his powers stemmed from his mind, and that if he had simply focused enough, he'd have the powers of an unstoppable god. Thankfully, he only ever realized his true potential shortly before his demise.
- Fighting Inexperience: Due to usually being the strongest person on Earth at any given time, The Plutonian never really learned any fighting styles since there was no need and he could just throw himself at his enemies haphazardly. Therefore, people on his level or stronger than him with actual fighting abilities can beat him with relative ease.
- Teleportation: His near invulnerability can be bypassed by teleporting away individual pieces of him. It is implied that he can be killed by teleporting lethal objects into his body, as seen when Qubit coerced him into saving Earth by teleporting a piece of the Nahru Visna's candle inside his heart. Despite his immense speed, multiple individuals have managed to escape from him by teleporting away.
- Materials Cloned From His Own Skin: The Vespa, an alien race, once managed to clone the cells of his near indestructible skin and use it to make a straitjacket capable of containing him. Later, when he tried to escape from a Vespa prison, the aliens once again managed to imprison him by tying him up with bandages made from his cloned skin.
- Heat-Death Of The Universe: During his fight against the Eleos, the godlike aliens teleported Tony to the very end of time (10^100 solar cycles into the future). Due to entropy, all molecular activity had ceased, making it impossible for even a being like Tony to move. If Qubit had not saved him afterwards, it's very likely that Tony would have been trapped there for all of eternity.
Quotes[]
“ | Do I have everyone's attention? If you're using a television, a computer, a radio or a phone anywhere on the planet, I suppose I do. So if the translator module is working correctly...let's answer some viewer mail. Lei Hujun of Harbin, China wondered aloud last week how I "could possibly be the same Plutonian everyone once loved." Trick question, Lei. How could I really have been with you that eager to turn on me? Also, Lei, you shouldn't have called me a "monster." I've never done anything to you. Or to your children, Yan and Zhang. Ages five and...what, about eight? Eight. Ricky Mitchell of Tupelo, Mississippi asked the college girl he's been sleeping with if she knows how many bodies I've left in my wake. Well, let's see. Figure three and a half million in Sky City...four-point-six in Singapore...sporadic global damage elsewhere...wow, population is really down. On the upside, however, this is a boom time for mapmakers. And finally, Caleb Albright of Vancouver, BC--and, by the way Caleb, yes, it is cancer--wrote in his journal, "who does he think he is?" Funny you should ask. You know what they used to say about the gods of myth. That they would disguise themselves and walk among you as ordinary men. I confess. I do that. It's enlightening. But...who am I? That guy down at the end of the bar? The new recruit? The foreigner who just moved in upstairs? I know what you're thinking. That at least in this moment, I can't be standing next to you. There is that. But I should add one thing. This has been a pre-recorded message. Sleep tight. | „ |

Trivia[]
- He was created by Mark Waid.
- Tony's civilian disguise could be a reference to the simplistic disguise of Superman in his regular attire and his iconic glasses during his normal job as a journalist for the Daily Planet, due to nobody being able to see past it despite how similar Superman looks to "Clark Kent".
