“ | This pint-sized lady of the Nest loves her playthings. And anything that’s not her toy doesn’t last long in her nursery. | „ |
~ Twitter Description |
The Pretender is the main antagonist of the mobile puzzle video game Very Little Nightmares. She is a wealthy, spoiled brat, and the presumed leader of her home known as The Nest. With her parents seemingly being absent, she rules over the mansion with an iron fist, flying into a furious rage when the slightest detail is out of place.
Characteristics[]
Many of the rooms in the Nest there were seen towards the end of the game were dedicated to the Pretender and her dolls, such as TV rooms, tea rooms, and a dining room that has very long table with many chairs. The Pretender seems to like to bring attention to herself, having a statue of herself in the entranced hall, many various portraits of herself hung all over the walls, and a throne-like seat that sits amongst the normal seats in the TV room.
Both the Craftsman and the Butler work 24/7 to suit her needs and her needs exclusively, as her parents seem to be absent. The Pretender's involvement with their "employment" at the Nest is unknown, but we can conclude that they are most likely enslaved as The Butler's hands are bound behind his back by a lock and The Craftsman's feet being backwards by her strength. She also may have them controlled through threats of using her power on them, having the ability to turn whatever she touches into nothingness.
The Pretender has very little patience for anything that is not in line with how she thinks they should be. While she has many portraits of many children that have come to the Nest, these children are seen to have been turned into dolls and arranged into particular environments that The Pretender wants them to be in. After finding one of her dolls out of place, she is seen dragging them out of the dining room and scolding them just before dragging them to the edge of the cliff to be ripped in two. It should be noted that she is seen crying after doing so, just before she turns around to spot the player. It is unknown if this is out of remorse for her actions, out of missing her parents, or for some entirely different reason all together. However, it is out of remorse for her actions, missing her parents and also tearing one of her toys to shreds, revealing a sensitive side of her.
Like most villains in the franchise, The Pretender will chase any child she finds lurking in her area. Instead of capturing them, she will turn them into nothing. Despite her typical sophisticated manner, the Pretender will become erratic and feral once spotting one of the children desperately trying to escape her home. Even after almost being killed, she won't give up until her target is eliminated.
Appearance[]
She has long white hair tied into a ponytail, large bangs over her eyes (making them non-visible), very light skin, pink blush, poorly applied red lipstick, an old-time Victorian-style green dress, a white bib, and tiny feet with greenish shoes. She is slightly taller than the other children.
Biography[]
The Pretender is first seen having a tea party in a room full of dolls while The Child in the Raincoat crawls underneath the floorboards. After this, she is seen in various paintings in different rooms that the child passes through.
She is again seen in the entrance hall dragging out a doll that the child had previously knocked over. She scolds it, and then leaves the home dragging the doll behind her.
At the very end of the game, after escaping The Butler, the child can hear crying coming from around the corner. This turns out to be The Pretender, sitting on a white bench with the doll torn in half lying on the ground in front of her. Once the child arrives, she turns around and screams. The child begins making her way down the cliff while The Pretender chases after her. On the way down, the child will make a path for another escaping child, and in return the child decides to help them. At the very end of the chase, The Pretender chases the child to a cliff ridge. The other child, just above them, drops a bolder on top of The Pretender. The camera zooms into the scene in suspense. The Pretender then stands up, screams, then both she and the child fall off of the cliff. Just before The Pretender catches her mid-fall, they fall into the water.
