The Princess is the titular secondary antagonist of the 2023 visual novel Slay the Princess. She is a mysterious individual the player has to slay in order to prevent her from allegedly destroying the world.
Throughout the game, depending on the player's choices, the Princess takes on vastly different forms. It's also eventually revealed that she's actually a fractured version of an entity called the Shifting Mound, who is the goddess of change.
Biography[]
The Princess is a part of The Shifting Mound, which is one half of the cycle of existence, that being the capacity to change. The player is an unconscious form of The Long Quiet, which is stillness. The Narrator, who speaks to the player within his mind, split them apart and blinded them both from their true identities, so he could convince the player to slay the princess, and in the process destroy the shifting mound, ending death for all living things in the real world. The princess, being the embodiment of change, constantly changes depending on how she is perceived. This is altered by how the player sees her, for the most part.
Because she changes depending on how she is perceived as, she can change into a large multitude of different forms, some diabolical and some innocent. She is not actually a princess, or even any kind of royalty, but has been portrayed this way based on the construct she is enclosed in, and how the Narrator has manipulated it. Her form of a princess was only made because its what the scattered mind of the shifting mound could fathom, and it ended up choosing a princess.
By her nature she is neutral in terms of good and evil, being a combination of creation and destruction. In her complete state she does not want to destroy the world, only allow it to change, but death exists in her multitudes, so by existing she allows for destruction and death. Since she is the capacity for change, she is capable of ending the world, as well as creating another world. She is death and birth.
Depending on the player's choices, she can be destroyed, which will rid the universe of death, but also rid it of birth. Another option is to be set free alongside The Long Quiet, where she and The Long Quiet will be set free onto the world and continue the cycle of change and stasis. The last option is to be trapped as an incomplete version of herself forever, and is likely the worst outcome for everyone, as all of existence is stuck as a broken paradox.
