The bigenerated form of the The Rani is one of the two main antagonists (alongside Mrs. Flood) of Season 2 in the Disney+ Era of the Whoniverse.

She is a renegade Time Lady formerly known as Ushas who has faced off against the Doctor in his sixth, seventh, tenth and fifteenth incarnations thus far. She is a genius-level biochemist and inventor who rejected the Gallifreyan policies of non-interference over other races and became an outcast from their society.

In her new, bigenerated form, she and her previous incarnation, Mrs. Flood, attempt to free the first Time lord Omega from the Under Universe in order to create a new race of Time Lords and a new Gallifrey.

She was portrayed by Archie Panjabi in this incarnation.

Biography[]

Mrs. Flood bi-generated into the next incarnation of the Rani during the episode "The Interstellar Song Contest". Mrs. Flood hands her the Vindicator readings she was carrying, and the two Ranis made their exits, with the new Rani promising that absolute terror would befall the Doctor.

The two enacted their plan in "Wish World" where the Rani kidnapped a baby from 1865 Bavaria, who was actually yet another member of the Pantheon of Discord, Desiderium, the God of Wishes. They had Conrad Clark wish for the titular world where he was viewed as a god. Their true purpose was to have people doubt the world, causing it to break, which would then awaken Omega, the founder of the Time Lords. They kidnap the Doctor for expressing doubt, as the Rani reveals her identity and explains her plan. She then drops the Doctor into the Under-Verse to his death as the world is destroyed, only for him to be saved by Anita of the Time Hotel.

The world resets as it does each day (with 23 May 2025 looping indefinitely), but the Doctor manages to not be reset. He then opens the door to the Time Hotel into his workplace (formerly UNIT), freeing all of the UNIT workers and allowing them to prepare to fight the Rani. The Rani indentifies them to the Bone Creatures of the world, who attack them as the Doctor manages to hijack the Rani's flying vehicle in order to reach her ship and disable the barrier to allow Ruby Sunday to teleport up to Clark. The Rani uses the energy of the Vindicator in order to free Omega, now the creature of nightmares he was feared to be, who declares his intentions to consume the universe and promptly devours this incarnation of the Rani, as Mrs. Flood flees.

Personality[]

The Rani views alien civilizations as nothing but potential subjects for her scientific experiments, and has no qualms about slavery, subjugation and even mass murder.

The Rani was an evil scientific genius whose villainy came not from the usual variety of lust for power and suchlike, but from a mindset that treated everything (including morality) as secondary to her research. She was known to enslave entire worlds in order to have a ready supply of experimental subjects and a place to carry out her experiments uninterrupted. In her this incarnation, she was a cruel, sociopathic woman who would stop at nothing in order to fulfil her plan of freeing Omega. She was also shown to be abusive towards her previous incarnation, viewing her sentimentality with contempt. In the end, her vanity was her downfall as she believed she could control Omega, proudly declaring that she answers to no one.

Trivia[]

During his initial tenure as showrunner, Russell T. Davies said that, if the Rani was brought back, she would probably have been portrayed by Ruthie Henshall (who portrayed Stephanie Gaunt in another of Davies' sci-fi programmes Wizards vs Aliens). Ultimately, she would return in Russell T. Davies's second tenure, played by Archie Panjabi.
Unlike both The Doctor and The Master, The Rani has always been depicted as female and has never changed her sex with a regeneration, although this was the standard back in Classic Who it's becoming more of a rarity with Time Lords as the show has progressed and shown that the species members are usually genderless.
