In the end, they were left to RAT.
~ The text at the end of the Five Nights at Candy's 2 trailer, glitching over from "rot".
What ABOUT the children!? They LOVE ME! I'm the most popular character in this FREAKIN' SHOW! Don't be jealous that I've got talent and YOU DON'T!
~ The Rat's actor arguing with the Puppeteer, showing his true egotistical colours.

The Rat, also known as RAT, is the main antagonist of the Five Nights at Candy's series, serving as the main antagonist of Five Nights at Candy's and Five Nights at Candy's 2, and one of the overarching antagonists of Five Nights at Candy's 3.

He is an animatronic rat from the original animatronic restaurant, the Rat & Cat Theatre, who is kept in a storage room of Candy's Burgers & Fries. In reality, he is haunted by the spirit of his original actor, who was accidentally killed by the Puppeteer in an argument and since then tries to get revenge on Mary Schmidt, whom he blames for his untimely death. When his soul leaves the animatronic body, it becomes the supernatural Shadow Rat.

Appearance[]

As his name suggests, the Rat is a animatronic rat made out of beige wood, with big, round ears (one being in undamaged condition, while the other one has a visible endoskeleton). He also has a stitched line running across through his snout. Besides the stitched line, there is also a metallic skin or layer seen on the Rat's forehead.

He also has hollowed eyes, one having a minor scar. The Rat also has a metallic cylinder running across his jaw that makes his jaw function. Speaking of the jaw, it is made out of metal endoskeleton and has thin squared teeth. His arms and his legs have holes on them and have three metal cubes on each leg and arm. The Rat also has visible endoskeleton hands and feet.

As a human, his physical appearance is unknown, but he does wear a saggy, tan-coloured rat costume.

As Shadow Rat, he looks just like Monster Rat, but is completely coloured in dark purple, with his eyes hollowed out, though white pinprick eyes appear during his jumpscare.

Personality[]

The Rat is a sadistic and remorseless animatronic possessed by an egotistical man. In 1961, when still human, he played the act of a friendly pal to fit the character that he's playing, while in reality he was an alcoholic who thought he was the only thing that kept the show alive, and started strangling the Puppeteer when he wanted him to go home. After the animatronic was created a year after his death, the man's vengeful soul possessed it to get revenge on the child he blamed for his death. On the grand re-opening, he attacked Mary's innocent younger brother just to spite her. For the next few decades, the Rat did many actions similar to this one, ranging from possibly ordering the deaths of two children to dismantling Chester for no reason.

Despite his savage demeanour, the Rat is smarter than other characters, slowly planning the shutdown of Rowboatics Corp. for several years. It's implied he ordered the Cat to murder two children, and following that he went on to murder at least one night guard, dismantle Chester and finally blame Candy for one of his murders, shutting down the restaurant.

The Rat seems to hold particular enmity towards Mary Schmidt, injuring her brother, trying to kill her in both dreams and real life, and then finally trying to kill her daughter. For all his evil, it's implied the Rat does genuinely get along with the Cat, as according to series creator Emil Macko the Shadows are a result of their souls leaving their physical bodies so they can be close to the other.

Biography[]

Five Nights at Candy's 3[]

In 1961, Mary plays hide and seek with the Rat's actor every day, yet always gets caught. One day, Mary, after telling the Rat's actor she will play hide n' seek with him and the other children, tries to find a place to hide, but all of the places all taken. Then, the Cat's actor runs out of the "Staff Only" room, leaving the door open and unlocked, Mary decides to hide in the Closet within that room. Soon after, the Rat says he saw her run in, and the Puppeteer appears, then starts chewing the actor in the Rat's costume/suit out for being drunk during work hours.

The Puppeteer asks him to "Think about their careers and the children", but the Rat starts to get angry and mock the Puppeteer, which prompts him to attempt to pry of the Rat's mask. The Rat fights back, but ultimately ends up getting pushed by the Puppeteer into his puppet Vinnie's bench, dying from the blunt force trauma (it's implied in the minigames that he was temporarily paralyzed, meaning that he heard everything until he died). The actor of the Cat will appear in the room and ask the Puppeteer what happened to the Rat, in which the Puppeteer says it was an accident and that the Rat was unstable.

The Cat says that they need to call the ambulance and the police, whom of which the Puppeteer says not to, and instead lie to the police and say they found the Rat this way. The Cat says to tell the police the truth and goes to the phone to do so, but the Puppeteer sneaks behind him and clenches the gap of the suit, suffocating Cat's actor, and kills him. The Puppeteer then calls the police and tells them that he found his co-workers dead while he was out, and leaves the room with Mary, now traumatized, still in the closet. The Rat's actor believes that it was Mary's fault for his death, and eventually haunts her in her dreams as revenge, taking the form of Shadow Rat.

Possessing the Animatronic[]

In 1962, a restaurant with animatronic versions of the Rat and the Cat is opened. The Rat is eventually possessed by the actor who died a year ago, still vengeful. In the very same day the restaurant has its grand re-opening, he injures Mary's younger brother. The Rat and the Cat are sent to the factory.

In 1964, the Rat is sitting on a conveyor belt with Blank the Animatronic and a new Candy. Suddenly, he reactivates and walks out of the security camera's frame before destroying it.

Five Nights at Candy's[]

In 1987, Shadow Rat watches the Cat capture and kill two children by putting them in the conveyor belt in the factory. The two children later possess Candy the Cat and Cindy the Cat. A month later, the Rat is taken to one of the two maintenance rooms. A month later, in November, the Rat awakens and tries to kill Mary, now a night guard, yet fails.

Back to the Factory[]

Two years later, Chester the Chimpanzee gets a key to the Rat's room. He opens it, and is instantly attacked and dismantled by him. While Chester would be rebuilt by the Penguin, it's implied this incident resulted in the other animatronics turning against him.

In 1993, the Rat activates yet again and kills the current night guard, while framing Candy for it. Candy's Burgers and Fries is closed down, and everyone is sent to the factory. Eventually, another, unknown incident happens and Rowboatics Corp. goes bankrupt.

Five Nights at Candy's 2 and possible death[]

In 2007, Marylin Schmidt, Mary's daughter, loses another bet and is forced to spend another five nights at the abandoned factory. A few nights later, the Rat and Cat activate and try to kill yet again.

After spending an extra night, Marylin decides to end it herself and sets the factory on fire by messing with the faulty wiring and the factory's power schedule. If the fire wasn't enough, the factory eventually crumbles. The fire brigade eventually arrive at 7 PM, and can't put the fire out until 8 the next morning.

It is extremely likely that the Rat was finally killed, 46 years after his first death, although nothing is confirmed.

About the Rat[]

Anyway, I.. uh.. I have one last thing to tell you... um... Alright, you've probably noticed that there is an extra door in the second party room.. um.. which is on Camera 09, I think. (clears throat) It's...it's not on the map. That's because it's really nothing special. It's like a storage room. We don't go in there much. I haven't even been in there myself, you know.. I just wanted to inform you that you don't need to worry about it, and that it's not a mistake that it's not on the map, or anything like that.
~ Phone Guy telling Mary Schmidt about the storage room where the Rat resides.
He was just... broken.
~ Mary's therapist on the Rat animatronic, unaware of the fact that it is haunted.
Just remember to stay on the path, so the shadows can't get you!
~ Origami Cat warning Mary about Shadow Rat.
These arcade games are SO boring... I once asked the Rat if we could get some new ones soon, but then he got a bit angry. The Rat is a real jerk.
~ A child at the Rat & Cat Theatre talking about RAT's actor.
The Puppeteer: Hey... Hey! ****? ****, are you OK? Come on man, this isn't funny... Oh no... No no no!
(The Cat's actor rushes in)
The Cat: What's with all the... What happened?!
The Puppeteer: LOCK THE DOOR!
(The Cat locks the door and approaches the Puppeteer)
The Puppeteer: I... I didn't mean to, it was an accident, I swear!
The Cat: We have to call an ambulance, and... and the police! We have to tell them what happened...
The Puppeteer: No wait, **** was always a bot unstable, he'd been drinking... We found him like this, yes... That's what we have to tell them! We found him dead in hear!
The Cat: Listen, it was an accident. An honest mistake. We have to tell them what really happened!
~ The Puppeteer and the Cat's actor in the aftermath of the Rat's actor's death.

Trivia[]

  • In the 6th's night cutscene, the time stamp says "64" (1964), unlike "87" (1987) in the other cutscenes. This means the Rat is at least 23 years old at the time of the game, which may explain his withered appearance.
    • It's later confirmed that the animatronic version of the Rat was created in 1962. This means the animatronic is 27 years old at the time of the first game, and 47 years old at the time of the second one. It is unknown how old his human counterpart was prior to his death.
  • The Rat is based on Springtrap and Fredbear, although it is not a springlock animatronic.
  • Five Nights at Candy's 4 is confirmed to not feature the Rat as the main antagonist.
  • It's possible that his true name is Randy the Rat, so it can rhyme with Candy the Cat. A kid in the penultimate minigame implied this, claiming that the Rat's name should rhyme with the Cat's.
  • He is actually never called Withered/Old Rat in Five Nights at Candy's 2, but is instead referred to as "the Rat".
  • While he was called RAT in the first game, from FNAC 2 and onward he's only ever called "the Rat".
