~ The Reaper to Aguri Yukimura. |
The Reaper, also known as the God of Death, the original human identity of Korosensei, is the overarching antagonist of the Assassination Classroom series. He was the world's greatest assassin until his student betrayed him and stole his identity.
He was voiced by Jun Fukuyama in Japanese and Sonny Strait in English.
Appearance[]
The Reaper was a slim man of slightly shorter than average height, with pale skin and and an amicable smile used to manipulate others. He had black hair reaching to his nape with bangs going past his black eyes (grey in the manga) and framing his face. His regular outfit consisted of a tunic over a high-collared shirt, black trousers tucked into boots, and a brown trench coat with vertical stripes and a hood. When imprisoned, he wore blue patients’ scrubs up until his escape. The Reaper was notably described to be attractive, and not Japanese according to Aguri Yukimura. In the tankobon extras, he’s stated to resemble a young boy.
Upon his initial transformation, his skin was ghostly pale with tentacles replacing a good portion of his limbs and hair. His eyes were pure red and he wore no clothes.
Biography[]
The Reaper was born into a corrupt slum, without knowing his name, age or birthday. He was sold off by his parents as a child and death began to become the only thing he could rely on. He made a name for himself as an assassin through his unlimited methods, and rumour christened him The Reaper by the time his body count exceeded 1000. No amount of security or obstacles could prevent him from killing his target, an example being him ending a 10-year civil war by killing two dozen military officers.
On a particular mission to assassinate a businessman, The Reaper stumbled across the man's son (the second Reaper), who begged to be taught by him. He obliged, ultimately using the child as a tool rather than a protégé, and driving him to the breaking point over the course of several years. He was turned in to the government and Yanagisawa's research facility by his student upon betrayal and began his new life as a human experiment subject for antimatter research.
In the lab he met a young woman, Aguri Yukimura. The two became fast friends and eventually fell in love. The Reaper began to learn about her other job as a teacher. Over the course of the year, The Reaper began to catch on to the methodology behind the experiments and hijacked them, pushing them in the direction he wanted. His ultimate goals was to become a destructive being with unlimited power to wreak havoc upon the world.
On the 13th of March he learned that in a year his body would explode, taking earth with it. He decided taking earth with him was a great idea upon remembering his childhood and so broke out of his cell using the power he acquired, instructing Aguri to leave him and don't intervene in his rage. The Reaper rampaged through the facility with his newfound strength and body murdering countless people and destroying the building. As he was about to leave and resume his life of destruction, Aguri attempted to stop him but got impaled by a trap, cutting her life short. While holding her in his arms for the first time, The Reaper realised how he felt about her, his first friend and love. He wished to polish his powers for something other than destruction and regreted that he hadn't learned how to use his powers to heal, so he could be able to save Aguri's life.
As Aguri's life faded, she asked him to use his new powers to take care of her students of Class 3-E at Kunugigaoka Junior High and become their new teacher for the remaining year he has of life. He decided to fulfill this promise with Aguri, to continue her legacy and protect her students, which would give him another try at teaching. To be able to approach the students, he asked the tentacles to become "weak, flawed, and vulnerable". And so, his life as Korosensei began.
Personality[]
The Reaper was a damaged man believing humans were only born to die, and that he could manipulate anyone below him as long as he gave them what they wanted. He cared little for his victims and as shown by his student, had a habit of using people for his own gain.
Upon meeting Aguri and learning what it felt like to care about someone, he gained compassion, humour and even perverse tendencies. According to Aguri, if he was born in a peaceful country, his personality would be "someone a little perverted, with a good head but a few screws loose, petty about small things, and also very stubborn." She states he has “a gentle smile not just for business, but because he is a gentle person himself." This prediction happens to reflect his personality, which became forefront after he answered the tentacles.
