~ The Russian plotting to steal the diamond with his brother Boris. |
"The Russian" is the overarching antagonist of the 2000 crime comedy film Snatch. He is the brother of Boris the Blade and the one responsible for his plot to steal an 86-carat diamond from professional thief Franky Four-Fingers.
He was portrayed by Velibor Topic.
Biography[]
Despite his importance to the plot, the Russian only appears twice in the entire film. His first appearence is when Franky Four-Fingers robs a bank in Antwerp while dressed as an Orthodox Jew along with the rest of his gang. In the aftermath, the Russian is revealed as a member of the gang. He convinces Franky to go and buy a gun from his brother, arms dealer Boris the Blade, in the UK. Franky agrees to follow his advice.
However, the Russian calls ahead and warns Boris that Franky is carrying the 86-carat diamond he stole during the heist, which he intends to sell to crooked American jeweller Cousin Avi. Boris is advised by his brother not to go after Franky directly, as Avi will realise that the Russian was behind the theft. Instead, the Russian tells Boris to hire somebody else to steal the diamond for him.
The Russian does not appear in the film after his phone call with Boris, but it can be assumed that he is angry when he discovers that his brother was killed by Bullet-Tooth Tony and that Cousin Avi now has the stone.
Trivia[]
- Despite being credited as "The Russian", the character is likely Uzbekistani as this is the stated ethnicity of his brother Boris.
