~ The Scary Lion furiously demanding to know where the Bear is hiding.

The Scary Lion with Big Scary Teeth, also known as The Scary Lion or just The Lion, is a supporting antagonist in the British live-action toddlers' television series Teletubbies, serving as the main antagonist in the episode See-Saw. He is a wooden lion attached to a blue skateboard-like contraption who enjoys playing hide and seek with The Bear with Brown Fuzzy Hair and seems to enjoy scaring his audience, who are the Teletubbies. He appears to be playful on the surface but seems to have an aggressive and even murderous nature, shown by his many attempts to chase down The Bear.

He was voiced by the late Eric Sykes.

Appearance[]

The Lion is a menacing-looking mechanical wooden yellow lion with a brown mane attached to a blue board with wheels. He has large golden eyes that move back and forth and a movable mouth with small sharp teeth. He also has a moving tail.

Personality[]

The Lion appears to be rather playful, enjoying giving his audience a good scare and is very theatrical. He also appears to have a sense of humour. However, he is also very unpredictable and seems to have an underlying malicious intent, shown when roaring and when getting increasingly frustrated when he can't find the Bear. He is also very relentless, stopping at nothing to catch the Bear.

Biography[]

The Lion and the Bear[]

In Teletubbyland, the magic windmill spins, cueing the magical event of the Lion and the Bear for the excited Teletubbies. The Teletubbies run to a hill and hear a distant voice announcing that the Bear is coming, prompting the four to run to a nearby hill to watch the performance. The Bear introduces herself to the audience while making jokes and says that she's hiding from the Lion.

After the Bear hides behind a tree, the Lion can be heard roaring menacingly off-camera, making the trees blow in the wind and causing the clouds to speed up as if the Lion is spinning the earth itself around. The Lion then appears and introduces himself, much to the horror and laughter of the Teletubbies. The Lion begins roaming Teletubbyland, declaring that he intends to find the Bear but is clueless to where she is, all while the Bear mocks him from behind the tree.

After his search proves unsuccessful, he demands to know where the Bear is, getting increasingly aggressive each time he asks. The Bear finally blows a raspberry at the Lion, leading to a chase with the Bear continuing to mock the Lion while the Lion roars and chases her down furiously. Eventually, the Lion chases the Bear off-camera and their fate is left unknown.

Trivia[]

  • The Scary Lion and the Lion and Bear segment in general was extremely controversial due to complaints about the frightening nature of the sketch including its' tone, threatening voices and dialogue, uncanny character designs and reportedly traumatized many toddlers who had nightmares after watching it. Due to the overwhelming controversy, all episodes featuring the Lion and the Bear were edited to remove the sketch. In 2001, a revised version of the skit was made which had rerecorded voices and removed some of the scarier scenes. However, despite the controversy both sketches are still banned in several countries including the United States, France, Japan and Russia. Just the original version is banned in Teletubbies' home country the United Kingdom, Ireland, Czech Republic, Australia, Germany, Norway, South and North Korea, New Zealand and Indonesia.
  • The Lion and the Bear have been featured in various Teletubbies merchandise, including jigsaw puzzles, stickers and dominoes. They also made appearances in the mobile game Teletubbies: My First App, although the narrator instead voices them.
  • The models for the Lion and Bear were actually life-size wooden models with certain movable parts and are transported by a string attached to the board. In several shots, the string can be seen.
  • The Lion and Bear segment first appeared in the fourteenth episode of season one titled 'Seesaw'.
