~ Madame Creuzodete on The Serpent. |
The Serpent is the main antagonist of the Monica Teen series of the Monica's Gang franchise.
She is an ancient alien that ruled the Earth before humanity even existed, but was banished alongside her people to an alternate universe, ever since then, she has used the last remains of her power and influence to find some way to free herself, mostly by making deals and turning humans into her pawns to aid her in her re-conquest of Earth.
She is the main antagonist of Monica's Adventures, most notably acting as the main antagonist of the End of the World Super Saga.
Personality[]
According to Madame Creuzodete, the Serpent is a purely evil entity, an evil older than humanity itself. For a long time, she has been planning to reconquer Earth, in an event called by many as the End of the World, which would result in the death of thousands of people and the total pollution of the planet. She, like many other evil spirits, is attracted to bad thoughts, such as the desire for revenge.
Biography[]
Darkness Upon the Face of the Deep[]
According to Madame Creuzodete, the Serpent is the primordial evil, an malevolent entity older than humanity mentioned in the scriptures. In the distant past, when the Earth was covered in darkness, the Serpent ruled the planet along with the Shadow People, a servant species of equally evilness, until they were banished and subsequently imprisoned on a planet located in the Lower Universe, known as Planet Tomb. The Serpent, in particular, was positioned in the last of nine circles within the Abyss; however, for billions of years she planned her eventual return to Earth, in an event that would become known as the End of the World.
As the centuries passed, the Serpent, extending its influence to the Common Universe, would make pacts with human beings in exchange for their souls, transforming them into Liquid Shadow - also known as Serpent's Blood - and thus creating more members of the Shadow People. She also created the Rune of IOR, known as the Serpent Seal, which would serve as a symbol of occultation for the planets marked by her subjects.
Heralds of the Apocalypse[]
During human history, she has made pacts with humans in order to achieve her goals. She was likely related to the House of Asclepius, as they sought to bring the Shadow People back to Earth through the Inverse Tower. Through a servant, she provided foul powers to an orphan under the House's care so that he would eventually pollute the planet to the point that dark clouds covered the atmosphere and prevented sunlight from reaching the surface. This boy, through a pact, would become one of his main pawns for his future plans: the White Horse of Decay.
In 1994, she was attracted by a woman's desire for revenge, who asked for a way to bring her daughter back to life. Seeing potential in her, the Serpent provided the means for her to resurrect the girl, with plans to turn her into another of his pawns: the Pale Horse of Death. However, her plans were thwarted due to the interference of Monica's Gang, who defeated the Horse and sent it to Hell.
In some unknown way, the Serpent transformed a girl from Pitanga Tree Girls, named Penha, into the Red Horse of War, although her role in her plans is still unknown.
Freedom[]
In the events of the Heirs of the Earth saga, the Serpent attracted Monica, Denise, Franklin, Chuck, Zeca and the Astronaut to Planet Tomb through the abduction of Nick Nope by the Shadow People. Upon arriving on the planet, the Gang rescued Nick Nope and blew up Tomb by setting fire to the rivers of Liquid Shadow exposing them to sunlight. Although they thought they had killed the Serpent, the truth was that they had freed it, in addition to all evil spirits, leaving her free to continue with her End of the World plans.
Powers & Capabilities[]
As the primordial evil, the Serpent is probably the most powerful being in the Super Saga universe - probably the whole Monica's Teen universe. Some of her confirmed powers include:
- Immortality: The Serpent is an extremely ancient entity, as she inhabited the Earth billions of years before the emergence of humans until she was banished and imprisoned in the abyss of the Planet Tomb. Since then, eons later, she has still remained active, planning her return to Earth in an event prophesied as the End of the World.
- Granting Immortality: Indirectly, the Serpent can grant temporary immortality to people cursed with the Seal of the Serpent. This is because the seal will only break when the Fourth Horse reveals itself and the End of the World begins.
- Invulnerability: As part of her immortality, the Serpent is resistant to damage, such as the fact that she survived the explosion of Planet Tomb.
- Interdimensional Influence: Despite being physically imprisoned on the Planet Tomb, which in turn is located in the Lower Universe, the Serpent manages to extend her influence to the Common Universe, sealing pacts and granting powers to humans on Earth.
- Resurrection: The Serpent can bring dead beings back to life, whether by a few individuals, such as the Lake Girl and Captain Fray, or collectively, as in the case of all the Shadow People in the distant past. Since all the examples mentioned were part of her domain, in addition to the fact that Captain Fray was unable to use good souls that ascended to the Silver City, it is possible that this ability is limited to evil spirits and inhabitants of Planet Tomb.
- Soul Manipulation: By condensing the pain and suffering of the souls of the dead, the Serpent can create Liquid Shadow, also called Serpent's Blood. Through this mystical liquid, she manages to contaminate and possess both living and dead beings and transform them into her slaves.
- Entomokinesis: The Snake is in control of all insects on Earth, such as flies and cockroaches, as well as other arthropods such as arachnids and centipedes. Through them, she has knowledge about everything that happens on the planet, watching both her subjects and future threats to her plan through their eyes.
- Concealment: The Serpent Seal is used as a symbol of concealment among those who know about the supernatural (e.g. Berenice and Shadow People) and use it to hide important locations or objects (e.g. the junk room and planets marked for conquest, respectively). The Serpent's Blood cannot be captured by cameras or any type of electronic device.
Limitations[]
- Higher Beings: From what her backstory indicates, the Serpent is not at the top of the power scale in the Super Saga universe, as an unknown force was able to banish her from Earth and imprison her for billions of years on the Planet Tomb, in addition to the fact that her servants, the Shadow People, need to conceal planets conquered by them with the Rune of IOR. Theories indicate that they are the inhabitants (or inhabitant) of the Golden City, but there is nothing confirmed yet.
Trivia[]
- The Serpent was inspired by different entities from different mythologies, mainly those that resemble/are snake-like beings. Some of the examples and evidence that support these references are:
- Lucifer/Satan (The Bible)
- Her name, Serpent, is a reference to the Serpent of Eden, who caused mankind's banishment from the Garden of Eden.
- Madame Creuzodete said that it is the "evil mentioned in the scriptures", like the Devil is mentioned many times in the Bible and other Abrahamic religious books.
- She made pacts with many people (such as Berenice and Captain Fray), taking advantage of it victims' vulnerability to offer them what they most desire in exchange for their souls, like a classic deal with the devil.
- She inhabited the last of the nine circles of the Abyss on Planet Tomb, which is practically Hell. In the Divine Comedy, by the poet Dante Alighieri, Lucifer was located in the Ninth (and last) Circle of Hell.
- She is involved in the End of the World, just as the Devil, according to the Book of Revelation, will fight against God and His angels.
- Jormungandr (Norse mythology)
- The name Jormungandr literally means the World Serpent, or Midgard Serpent (as the Norse called the Earth).
- The Rune of IOR, known as the Seal of the Serpent, meaning "serpent" or "eel" was used to symbolize Jormungandr.
- Jormungandr will participate in Ragnarok, the end of the world in Norse mythology, and will fight against the god Thor, completely devouring him, just as the Serpent is involved in the End of the World.
- Apep / Apophis (Egyptian mythology): Apep has the form of a gigantic serpent and represents primordial chaos, just as Madame says that the Serpent is "primordial evil".
- Asclepius (Greek mythology): Asclepius is the god of medicine and is generally represented by snakes and serpents. The cult of the Serpent on Earth is known as the House of Asclepius.
- Ukhu Pacha (Inca mythology): In Inca mythology, snakes represented the underworld or world of the dead (Ukhu Pacha), just as the Planet Tomb was where the souls of the dead were taken into the presence of the Serpent.
- Lucifer/Satan (The Bible)
- The Serpent is the main villain of the End of the World Super Saga and is behind all the antagonists of all the sagas, as seen below:
- Shadows of the Past and Halloween: Penha is the Red Horse of War, one of the Serpent's heralds. However, she is not aware of her role as a Horse and her motivations in the saga are independent of the Serpent's ambitions (to get revenge on Mônica). Agnes, another antagonist of the Shadows of the Past saga, is a ghost who is part of the Shadow People, an alien race that directly serves the Serpent, and was summoned by Penha to assist in her plans.
- Umbra: The Flying Donkey, the main villain of the Umbra saga, is the Pale Horse of Death, formed when the necromancer Berenice fused with the spirit of her daughter, the Lake Girl, to become a herald of the end of the world as part of the pact she made with the Serpent. The Children of Umbra, who were antagonists in the first editions of the saga, were victims of Berenice's ritual and manipulated the Gang to free themselves from their curse. The Guardians of the Threshold are the spirits of Monica, Smudge and Maggy, manipulated by Berenice to rescue the Donkey Skull and complete the ritual.
- Shadows of the Future: Cumulus and Maggy Lee are the only antagonists who have no relationship with the Serpent, as their origins and ambitions are independent of her plans. Future Jimmy was the creation of the Flying Donkey, which in turn was created by the Serpent, in an alternative timeline, responsible for other antagonists such as the Crematorium and the Silent.
- Heirs of the Earth: The Engineers, the False Nick Nope and Shub-Sogoth are part of the Shadow People, an alien race that directly serves the Serpent in his plans to return to Earth in an event known as the End of the World.
- The Inverse Tower: Captain Fray is the White Horse of Decay, who became a herald through a pact with the Serpent to survive a catastrophe in his home; his mission as a Horse is to pollute the Earth and prepare the planet for the return of the Serpent and the Shadow People. He is responsible for creating other minor antagonists, such as Cerberus, Venerusa and the Necrotaur. The House of Asclepius, which was responsible for building the Inverse Tower under the Hospital Lazarus of Bethany and for creating Captain Fray, was a cult that worshiped the Serpent and wished to dominate the world with the help of the Shadow People.
- The Haunted Park: The Silent One, who was behind the park's haunted animatronics, is a creation of the Future Jimmy, who in turn was created by the Flying Donkey under orders from the Serpent. However, his motivations are independent of the Serpent's plans.
